Mary was currently playing in game two of the playoffs against Montreal in the second period with the game tied up 1-1.
She was skating across the front of the goal glancing over seeing Ryan getting the puck and he passed behind her to Dylan, who touched the puck once passing right to Mary. Mary took the puck to her backhand and tossing the puck at the goal.
Mary got her first playoff goal with Ryan’s first playoff assist.
Ryan screamed loudly beaming proudly as he pointed at his girl as he reached her first tackling her into a hug that Dylan quickly joined.
“Let’s go baby!” Ryan cheered pressing a kiss on the top of her helmet making her giggle as she hugged them both.
Mary was sitting on the bench next to Ryan in the third period after Dylan just scored a goal for them and she glanced up at the Jumbotron and froze seeing who was on the screen.
Will. Will who was sitting a few seats away from her friends but sitting with their parents.
Ryan glanced over feeling her tense up and followed her eye sight and his jaw clenched seeing Will on the screen, “What the hell is he doing here.” Ryan muttered to himself scoffing.
Mary was still frozen looking at the screen making Ryan gently grab her knee making her blink and slowly look away from the screen and at Ryan.
“I know.” Ryan softly mumbled to her seeing her open her mouth but not getting any words out. Ryan grabbed her hand not caring who could see and held her hand for the last minute of the game.
Capitals won game two 3-1.
Mary was glued to Ryan’s side even more than usual heading back to the locker room.
Ryan came out the shower seeing Mary already sitting in her stall all ready to leave and she was fiddling with her necklace.
Ryan sat a hand on the back of her neck as he set his things in his stall.
“I don’t know if i want to see him.” Mary quietly confessed to just Ryan. She didn’t even know what to say to him.
Ryan softly nodded and bent down in front of her grabbing both of her hands, “The second you want to leave we leave.” Ryan promised her. He also didn’t want to see Will.
Mary slowly nodded letting out a shaky breath and squeezed his hands.
“We’ve got this.” Ryan gave her a little wink and leaned over kissing her forehead softly making her lips quirk up giving him a little nod as Ryan stood back up and helped her stand up holding her hand still.
Mary took a deep breath making Ryan squeeze her hand as they walked out of the locker room together.
Mary perked up seeing their family and friends.
James hugged Mary immediately as Grace got to hug Ryan first.
Grace immediately pulled Mary into the hug with Ryan once James let go her.
Mary and Ryan hugged their friends, Grace and Mary’s parents who were all at the game for them.
Mary and Ryan both tensed seeing Will standing there looking nervous.
“We will give you some space.” Grace decided and got a nod from Gabe, she made sure everyone left them alone and Gabe stayed to make sure Will didn’t go too far.
James looked at Mary and she gave him a soft nod before he would walk away.
“This way.” Ryan spoke lowly holding onto Mary’s hand as he started walking and opened a door to an empty office and walked in with Mary with Gabe and Will following.
Ryan just gave Will a look as Mary didn’t make eye contact with her brother.
Will swallowed having seen how Mary and Ryan both lost their smiles when they saw him and how Mary immediately grabbed Ryan’s hand and how Mary is now standing step behind Ryan and wouldn’t look at him.
“I’m sorry.” Will started fiddling with his sleeve as he looked at two people who have always been the most important people in his life until he screwed it up.
“For what exactly.” Ryan scoffed angrily, he wouldn’t forget how Will made Mary sob multiple times and made his girl miserable.
“For everything.” Will quickly breathed out, “I’m sorry that i freaked out like that and the things i said to you both were so uncalled for. I know that.”
“And then ignoring us and everyone else for months.” Ryan snarked as his thumb softly rubbed circles on the back of Mary’s hand.
“I’m sorry for that too.” Will quickly rushed out, “And i will apologize to everyone after.”
“I thought you two were together for while and were hiding it from me with everybody else, it doesn’t excuse my actions but it is why i did it.” Will told them honestly.
“We weren’t.” Ryan said simply, “And it doesn’t excuse the way you treated us.”
Ryan wouldn’t have never believed anyone if they told him that Will would just ghost his sister for months and not be there for some of her biggest moments of her life. The Will Ryan knew adored his baby sister with everything he had and would have never done that to her.
“I know.” Will quickly rushed out. He didn’t have a better reason why he did what he did.
Gabe nodded in approval glad to see Will finally figured out he’s been an idiot. Gabe won’t lie he was extremely shocked to see Will show up at the game today, he didn’t think Will was going to fix things anytime soon.
“And i’m sorry that i suggested you were my friend only to be with Mary.” Will looked at Ryan apologizing to him and looked at Mary.
“And God Mars i’m sorry for every single word i said to you and for every single word i didn’t say to you.” Will looked so sincerely at his sister with tears in his eyes realizing just how much of a dick he has been to his favorite person, “I’m so sorry for breaking so many promises.”
Mary just swallowed keeping her eyes on the floor.
“I’m so sorry.” Will breathed out looking between the two.
“I’m sorry you found out the way you did but it doesn’t justify your actions Will.” Mary spoke up for the first time. Will frowned hearing her say just his name not a nickname for the first time in a very long time.
“I don’t forgive you.” Mary told him straightforward making his face drop, “One day i might be able to but i can’t not yet.” Mary looked up making eye contact with Will for the first time and she swallowed uncomfortably seeing the tears in his eyes.
“I’m sorry i can’t do this.” Mary got out and quickly rushed out of the room.
“I don’t care about your apologizes anymore, don’t make Mary cry again.” Ryan said sternly as he walked out of the room after Mary.
Will watched them go and let out a shaky breath he knew he deserved the hurt he is feeling because he knows it is nothing compares to what he put Ryan and Mary through.
Ryan quickly got to Mary gently grabbing her wrist spinning her around and saw her shaky jaw and she just lunged at him hiding her face holding onto him so tightly.
“I got you.” Ryan cupped the back of her head promising her as he felt her shaking in his arms, “I’ve always got you.” Ryan softly mumbled as he kissed her head.
Mary had her hands in her hoodie pocket after she waved bye to the boys after their morning practice and headed to a different part of the hotel where her parents and sister are starting and Will should be there too by now.
Will had gotten into Ottawa early this morning while she was practice. Her practice was early in the morning so the team could all have the rest of today and tomorrow off for the holidays and time with their family.
Mary scanned her card on the door and walked into the large hotel room. She slipped her shoes off and dropped her bag by the front door and followed the sounds seeing her family all sitting around the couch in one of the rooms.
“Mars!” Will looked up and beamed, he immediately stood up and crossed the room quickly hugging his sister.
They haven’t seen each other since Will’s first game and that was over two months ago, it’s been the longest they have ever went not seeing each other and both of their lives have changed so much in the last two months.
Mary smiled happily letting out a sigh of relief and she hugged her brother back and rested her head on his shoulder just squeezing him tightly.
They get two whole days together before Will has to head back to San Jose.
Mary and Will eventually pulled away after hugging for at least a couple of minutes and Will pulled her to the couch squeezing her in between him and Grace.
And they all stayed like that for hours just catching up and enjoying time together. Until Colleen had all of them get dressed into nicer clothes as she planned for them to go out for Christmas Eve, she found a close Church for a Christmas Eve service and than out for a fancier dinner after.
December 25, 2025
Christmas Day was a simple but perfect day for the Smiths. All of them staying in their pajamas all day and just staying in the hotel opening presents and just catching up on time where they are all together.
The day went by so quickly and before anyone could blink they all were yawning and starting to fall asleep and they started saying goodnight.
Mary shifted in her bed feeling the bed move next to her, she looked and saw Will getting under the covers and laying down next to her.
Mary turned over facing Will, “Hello.” Mary whispered. Will or Mary would always sneak into each other’s beds growing up because they have always hated sleeping alone and always ended up talking for hours.
“Hi!” Will whispered back and they looked at each other and broke into tired giggles, just like they always did as kids.
“Are you happy with the team?” Will asked her softly, obviously they face time almost every day and they keep up with each other lives but he didn’t want to miss her being upset like her past team, even if didn’t think the BC team would be like that.
“I really like there. Everyone’s really awesome.” Mary answered softly, she loves it at BC and felt like she was so close to her family there especially her grandfather.
“Are you happy?” Mary asked back, she’s seen all the media of Will with Macklin and knew Will was happy with him. Especially because most of the times they facetime Macklin is with Will.
“Really happy.” Will answered honestly back, it was hard in the NHL and he was leaning more and more everyday but it made easier with the team he has and Macklin.
Mary nodded softly back.
They talked about a few more things and Mary took a deep breath wanting to talk to Will about Ryan.
Mary’s never had the courage to actually tell Will about her feelings for Ryan and she has always assumed he knew and never said anything.
“Uh i wanted to talk to you about something.” Mary said and waited for Will to say something.
Mary furrowed her brows when he didn’t say anything and than she heard a little snore.
Mary just laughed softly, Will has always fallen asleep so quickly.
Mary swallowed slightly before whispering and admitting, “I’m in love with Ryan.” Mary let out a breath after she said it, it’s the first time she has never said it aloud or admitted it before and it only felt right telling Will first even if he was asleep.
“Night Willy.” Mary placed a soft kiss to his blonde curls.
December 26, 2024
Mary had her hands in her purple trench coat with her headphones on as she walked off the bus and into the arena. She had said bye to Will this morning and now it was time for her to play in her first game in the 2025 WJC.
Their first game was against Germany.
Mary walked into the locker room to her stall and smiled softly seeing where her stall is, James as always next to her but this time Hutson isn’t across the room but next to Mary and Cole is next to James and Teddy is next to Hutson.
Mary sat down in her stall and started getting ready.
She was laughing and smiling as her and her boys were all sitting in their stalls together, she forgot how much she loves sitting with Hutson and Cole.
Mary is really happy she gets to play with her two best friends again. Especially because this could be the last time she plays with Cole as she most likely won’t be at the WJC next year. Granted they could play on a US team together in the future in the NHL but she doesn’t know. Hutson at least will be her teammate again when they both head to Washington so she knows she will be playing with him again.
And with James she has the rest of the BC season with him because most likely he won’t be getting drafted to the Capitals.
Mary shook off her sad thoughts and focused on the game about to start.
She smiled as she got to do her warm ups on the ice with all of her boys again and then the puck was about to drop.
Ryan took the face off and the game started.
Mary took off down the ice as Hutson got the puck and passed to the center to Ryan, Ryan times the pass perfect to Mary just before she skated past the last German player and she got a breakaway and tapped the puck right into the top corner getting the first goal of the game.
Mary laughed as Hutson skated right to her hugging her so tightly they almost knocked over, she has missed sharing the ice with him.
Ryan laughed softly and skated behind Mary making sure she didn’t fall and wrapped his arms around her from behind squeezing her tightly.
A couple minutes later Mary and James were passing the puck back and forth before Mary passed to Gabe and Gabe scored.
First period ended 2-0.
Mary jumped on the ice just as Cole got the puck and he passed to her, Mary brought the puck up and passed back to James setting him up for a one timer, he scored.
Cole jumped on James first and Mary skated over jumping on James next.
Germany scored two goals next.
Mary was out with James and Gabe for a couple shifts and she passed the puck to Gabe and he quickly passed it across the ice to James who scored.
Four minutes later the same line was out, Hutson grabbed the puck away from their net and passed to James, James darted around the other player and passed to his left to Gabe.
Gabe brought the puck around the back of the net and passed right to Mary as she skated to the net and she just tipped the puck in.
Gabe patted Mary’s head smiling at her as James and Hutson just tackled her in huge hug making Gabe laugh.
Not even a minute later Mary got the puck and passed back to the blue line to Hutson and Hutson took a shot and it tipped right off Gabe’s stick into net.
US was leading 6-2 at the end of the second.
Half way through the third period the score was 8-3.
Hutson passed the puck to Ryan and Ryan was in front of the goal and passed to his right and Mary grabbed the puck and flicked it, right into the net and getting her third goal, her hat trick.
Ryan beamed looking at her so proudly as he reached her first hugging her and pressing a kiss to the top of her helmet making her giggle as she leaned into him. Hutson reached her next and jumped into the hug shaking her head.
Mary was just about to come off the ice and she had the puck come towards her and she just flicked it up the ice towards Cole and then hopped off.
Mary cheered as Cole scored off her pass.
US won 10-4.
December 31, 2024
US had played against Canada and won 4-1, it was New Year’s Eve and they had the day off tomorrow so of course the whole team went out in Ottawa.
Mary and Hutson going in a corner and they spent most of the night munching on snacks they kept ordering together and laughing watching their teammates especially Cole and James be silly.
“One sec.” Hutson told her as he got an alert on his phone and walked away and outside of the restaurant/bar.
Mary just popped a french fry in her mouth and Hutson came back a few minutes later with a bag in his hand, “What’s that?”
“For you.” Hutson answered handing her the bag with a smile.
Mary furrowed her brows and opened the bag seeing a bag of grapes and she started laughing, She was talking to Hutson about how it’s good luck to eat twelve grapes under a table at midnight.
“Now you can do it.” Hutson just shrugged with a simple smile.
“Thanks Cole.” Mary said sincerely squeezing his arm softly and he just smiled and nodded back.
“Hutsy i need you to prove this point.” James came over and took Hutson’s arm making him stand up and be dragged away by James.
Mary look amused as Hutson glanced back at her waving making her wave back.
She looked at the time and saw it was almost midnight and she grabbed her grapes and decided to head to a quieter part of the restaurant.
There was another room of tables that no one was in and she grabbed a towel and plopped it on the ground under a table and sat down.
Ryan was sitting next to Zeev and Gabe and he glanced around not seeing Mary sitting at the table anymore.
He got up and walked through the restaurant looking for a quiet area knowing that’s where Mary would go and he saw a pair of boots sticking out from a table, Mary’s boots.
“What are you doing under there?” Ryan asked amused as he lifted the table cloth and leaned his head down looking at Mary sitting on the floor with a bag of grapes.
“Uhh.” Mary grimaced slightly at getting caught sitting under a table.
Ryan just smiled to himself and gently tapped her leg, “Scoot.” Mary listened and scooted over letting Ryan slowly get under the table and sit next to her, he barely fit under the table.
“So why are we eating grapes under a table?” Ryan playfully whispered with a soft teasing smirk.
Mary bit her lip and then answered softly, “It’s supposed to bring you good luck for the next year.”
“Good luck for anything?” Ryan asked her softly, he knows what he wants good luck in.
“Anything, Life, success, money, hockey, love…” Mary trailed off as she glanced Ryan’s lips before quickly looking away. She knew what she wanted good luck in.
Ryan bit back a smile, “Do you have enough for me?”
Mary blinked surprised he wants to do it but then again she shouldn’t be surprised because Ryan always does everything with her, “Yeah you have to eat twelve.”
Ryan nodded softly and he heard the minute countdown start for the new year and he grabbed twelve grapes handing them to Mary first and then grabbed twelve for himself.
Mary and Ryan waited till the countdown and once everyone started cheering and they started eating the grapes.
Mary ate her last one and smiled at Ryan, who she finished before her, “Happy New Years Ry.” Mary mumbled softly.
“Happy New Years Ellie.” Ryan mumbled softly back and promised himself next years he would have his girl.
January 2, 2025
Mary was playing in the quarter final game against Switzerland, it was the third period and US was up 7-1 and Mary had two goals and two assists already.
Mary looked over as the Switzerland player hit the puck and she immediately winced seeing Ryan getting whacked right in the face by the puck and going down on the ice, she skated over quickly not caring if the whistle was blown yet and kneeled down next to Ryan and could heard the curses he was letting out. Mary rested her hand on his back gently rubbing his back.
Mary let out annoyed sigh at how long it took for a whistle to be blown and she immediately gestured for the medical team to come over.
Ryan slowly sat up and being handed a towel and he held it to his nose and saw Mary kneeling next to him looking worried.
“It’s crooked?” Ryan mumbled out against the towel, his eyes wide from how much pain his nose was in.
“Just a bit.” Mary reassured him softly, “You still look great.” Mary whispered making Ryan smile and then wince in pain from smiling.
Mary got up as the trainers had Ryan get up and Ryan bring Ryan started talking to the referee about a penalty. He didn’t get one.
Mary shook her head softly and just grabbed Ryan and dragged him to the bench, he can argue later.
US won 7-2.
Mary headed out of the locker room after the game and headed down the medical room, Ryan had gotten dressed quickly and headed there after.
Mary leaned on the wall waiting for Ryan to come out.
Ryan walked out and saw Mary waiting for him and his lips quirked up.
“So?” Mary immediately asked looking at Ryan worriedly especially seeing good sized gash from a high stick and how dark the bruising already is.
“Broken.” Ryan just shrugged.
“Let’s get you some ice.” Mary decided and linked her arms with him and stared pulling him out of the rink making him just look at her fondly and happily be pulled.
January 5, 2025
Mary looked across the locker room at Ryan, whose stall is right across from her and he gave her a little smirk and nod, she shook her head softly smiling slightly back.
They were playing in the gold medal game against Finland.
“One more.” James mumbled glancing at his three best friends and Teddy who honestly was honestly becoming another one of his best friends.
This is most likely the last gold medal they are all gonna play together.
“One more.” Mary said back squeezing Hutson’s hand softly.
“Then we better win it.” Teddy smirked softly and looked at them fondly.
They all headed onto the ice and the game started.
Finland scored first but US quickly got a goal back once Mary passed to Ryan and Ryan passed across the net to James and James scored.
James cheered loudly as he crashed into Mary and Ryan after his goal. The game was tied.
A minute later Finland scored again and the first period ended with US down 1-2.
Second period stared and Finland scored again.
Mary shared a look with Ryan and Hutson nodding, Hutson got the puck and passed to Ryan.
Ryan flicked the puck up right near the goalies shoulder and before the goalie could block it, Mary hit the puck with the handle of her stick just below her shoulders and it went it.
“Atta girl.” Ryan immediately praised pulling her into his side as Hutson slammed into her other side, the three capital prospects are a dangerous trio on the ice together.
Next shift out Ryan got the rebound after Gabe’s shot and he passed it over to Mary and Mary dropped the puck back for Hutson and Hutson scored tying the game back up.
Mary and Hutson slammed into each other after his goal cheering.
Second period ended tied 2-2.
No one scored in the their period. It was going to overtime.
Eight minutes of nerve wracking overtime, Mary was stuck on the ice as Ryan and Hutson got off as Teddy and Zeev got on the ice.
Zeev got the puck and passed to Mary, Mary looked up and just whacked the puck down the ice and right to Teddy and Teddy easily got the puck into the back of the net.
Meaning US won the gold medal and won back to back medals.
Teddy slid across his knees and got up slamming into Mary screaming as he hugged her, Mary was screaming just as loudly back.
Teddy was jumped on by everyone meaning Mary was too as Teddy was hugging her and eventually as they got out of the giant hug. Cole, James and Hutson tackled the two to the floor. This time their dog pile had Teddy.
Mary got off the floor after a little bit and was looking for Ryan, Ryan snuck up behind her wrapping his arms around her neck and resting his chin on her head.
Mary quickly spun around and hugged Ryan tightly.
Gabe skated over to them and shook his head fondly, Mary glanced over as Gabe skated and opened one of her arms making Gabe quickly join the hug.
After a little bit they all lined for the national anthem and Mary was right in between Ryan and James.
Ryan got the trophy and lifted it up skating over to the team, the trophy was passed around and Ryan got the trophy back and lifted it up for the families.
He handed it to Mary next and patted her back softly as she skated over beaming holding up the trophy, she smiled at her family and waved when her Mom turned her phone around letting her see Will on facetime.
Mary handed the trophy to Trey next.
Mary laughed as Cole, James and Teddy started doing snow angels in the gold confetti and she shared a look with Hutson and shrugged joining them.
Slowly the team got off the ice and headed into the locker room.
Mary was tucked into Ryan’s side as he got to sing their song and she and Gabe shared a look and hair started giggling at Ryan’s voice crack making Ryan pinch her side.
After a long time in the locker room the team made their way back to the hotel to see their family and it was only eleven by the time they got back meaning by the time everyone starting going out it turned midnight.
Mary was standing on the patio of the bar they were all in here getting a few minutes of quiet time and she glanced at her phone seeing it was now her birthday.
January 6, 2025
“Happy birthday.” Ryan snuck up behind Mary and rested his chin on her shoulder and gently kissed her cheek.
Mary slowly spun around in his arms and her arms wrapped around his neck, “Thanks Ry.”
“Besides a gold medal what do you want for your birthday?” Ryan asked her with a small smirk.
“Anything?” Mary asked back raising an eyebrow, her eyes glancing down at his lips.
Ryan caught her glance and swallowed dryly, “Anything.” Ryan whispered back.
Mary bit her lip and slowly leaned closer to him, “I want you.” Mary quietly admitted before finally pressing her lips back to Ryan’s.
Ryan let out a relieved and happy sigh finally kissing her again, he cupped the back of her head holding him to her as she all but melted against him.
Mary’s hands tangled in his hair as neither of them wanted to pull away until her nose bumped his nose making him hiss in pain and pull away.
“Guess the grapes worked.” Ryan softly teased smiling happily down at her as he tried to catch his breath, he’s been waiting for four years to kiss her again.
Mary beamed up at him and leaned up on her toes again, “Guess so.” She pressed her lips softly back to him making him hum happy and kiss her back.
Mary slowly pulled back making him frown for a second before she rested her forehead against his forehead.
“I’ve been waiting for years to do that.” Ryan softly admitted to her, it felt like every moment they ever had was always interrupted by Will.
“Me too.” Mary admitted back, “Just everytime….”
“Will.” Ryan finished for her and they shared a soft laugh.
They heard Mary’s name being called and she frowned not wanting to go yet, she wanted to talk to Ryan about the feelings they obviously have for each other.
“It’s okay.” Ryan softly reassured her seeing her frown, “We can talk later today after we sleep.”
Mary softly nodded at his words and leaned up again pressing a few mores kisses to his lips before she heard her name getting called again.
“Later.” Mary promised and pecked his lips once more before rushing inside.
Ryan watched her go with a love sick smile as his hands touched his lips shocked, he cheered to himself, he is so close to getting his girl.
Mary was standing in the kitchen starring at the counter looking so sad, Ryan was leaning against the counter looking just as sad as Gabe was making them breakfast giving them glances, he didn’t know how to help them.
Mary just wanted to see Will so they could talk about this, she is supposed to have the whole day with Will and Grace today so hopefully they can fix this.
Will has ignored the hundred of messages she has sent him since last night and he didn’t answer any of her calls, he ignored all of Ryan’s messages and calls as well.
Mary felt her phone buzz and she looked down seeing Grace had responded to her about what time they would go see Will and she picked her phone and Mary froze seeing the text.

Mary’s phone clattered to the counter her eyes filling with tears.
“M?” Gabe called out concerned as Ryan pushed off the counter slowly walking over to her.
“He left.” Mary’s voice cracked making Ryan and Gabe share a look.
“Who left?” Gabe slowly asked feeling dread if it’s who he thought it was.
Mary looked up her jaw wobbling, “Will.”
Ryan scoffed to himself his face looking devastated for Mary but also for himself, he shook his head rubbing his jaw. Ryan stepped closer to Mary and slowly reached out grabbing her hand.
“We were supposed to have together, he promised.” Mary’s voice broke and she looked away wiping her eye. Will has never broken a promise before, he has never ignored her calls or messages and he has never been mad at her or mean to her before.
Gabe but his lip feeling angry and protective at the way Will was taking this and already Mary and Ryan both don’t deserve the way Will is treating them.
Mary rubbed her face and Ryan pulled her into a tight hug that they both desperately needed as Gabe walked over and gently rubbed Mary’s back and rested his other hand on Ryan’s shoulder.
“Grace can’t know.” Mary mumbled out through her soft sniffles trying to not start sobbing again.
Ryan and Gabe shared a look not liking that.
Mary looked up from Ryan’s chest, “Please she doesn’t need to be in the middle of this.” She didn’t think it would be fair for Grace to be stuck in between what ever is happening with her and Will.
Gabe frowned, Grace should know and smack some sense into Will. He knows how angry Grace is gonna end up being over Will’s actions and the way he is reacting to this. Will has a right to be mad that he didn’t know about Mary’s and Ryan’s relationship but he does not have a right to be reacting this angry and being so hurtful already.
“Okay.” Ryan agreed he didn’t like it but at the end of the day it is Mary choices.
“He’s never gonna forgive me.” Mary spoke softly and she couldn’t hold back her cry’s anymore and just cried against Ryan’s chest soaking his shirt with tears. Ryan clenched his jaw emotionally over this but hearing Mary so heartbroken just made it even worse.
Ryan gave Gabe a soft nod and slowly brought Mary to her room and made her laid down and she rested her good ear on her his chest, he knew how crying a lot can irritate her ear and she doesn’t need that right now too.
Ryan let out a few stray tears as they cuddled with each other.
Gabe wasn’t surprised to hear a knock on the door a couple hours later and saw James, Teddy, Cole and Hutson.
“Is she okay?” James immediately asked as Gabe let them in.
“Is Ryan okay too?” Hutson asked with a frown.
Cole, Hutson and Teddy didn’t know exactly what happened last night only that Will was angry at Mary and Ryan and left quickly. Then they all saw Will’s story of landing in Arizona and were worried knowing Mary, Grace and Will were supposed to be together today.
Gabe slowly shook his head no.
“What happened?” Cole asked looking serious.
“Will found out about them dating and he was furious, saying things he shouldn’t have been saying.” Gabe explained to them, “And he changed his flight leaving this morning and he didn’t tell Mary she found out from Grace.”
“He just left?” Teddy said annoyed feeling protective of his best friend and Ryan too.
“He’s angry.” Gabe said with a wry shrug, it didn’t make how Will reacted correct but it explained why he is acting the way he did.
Cole scoffed a bit shaking his head annoyed for how Will is acting, Will could be furious if he wanted but if he opened his eyes he would have seen the signs, since Cole has known Mary and Ryan they have never hid their feelings for each other ever and acted like a couple for years before they got together. Will spent the most time with them and if he didn’t know the obvious that’s on him, Ryan and Mary didn’t hide anything besides not kissing in front of Will and Will still could not figure it out.
James frowned shaking his head, this is gonna hurt Mary and Ryan but Mary especially and he hopes Will figures everything out sooner than later.
Hutson looked sad knowing how much Mary and Ryan both just adore Will and it’s been the three of them since they were all little so obviously Ryan, Mary and Will’s friendship has always been the closest one. It just baffled Cole how Will never realized, Mary and Ryan never hide their affections and so many friends, teammates and even Grace has joked to Will about Mary and Ryan and it never clicked for him?
Gabe sighed he hoped this doesn’t get any worse.
February 13, 2025
Mary slowly walked into the apartment tossing her phone in her bag after seeing Will not responding again. He has now turned off his read receipts.
It’s been three days and Will has not responded to one text or call from Ryan or Mary.
Mary knew he was ignoring them as she saw Grace get a text from Will. It hurt a lot, Will may have been talking to her less lately because he’s been distracted but to suddenly go to not speaking to Will at all hurt. It’s the longest she has even went in her life not speaking to Will.
She knew how hard this was on Ryan, he’s been more grumpy than usually, more snappy on the ice and frustrated about anything at practice. It sensed he is snapping at anyone who isn’t Mary.
It was her fault. If she just kept her feelings to herself none of this would have happened, Will wouldn’t be mad and Ryan would still have his best friend.
She would understand if Ryan wanted to break up for his friendship with Will.
Mary set her bag in her room and headed down the hallway knocked on the door of Ryan’s room and peeked in seeing Ryan laying on his bed.
“Hi baby.” Ryan smiled the tiniest bit, the only time he has smiled lately has been because of Mary.
He got up off his bed and walked over to her leaning down to kiss her and she turned her head so he kissed her cheek, his brows furrowed confused.
“We should talk.” Mary mumbled out avoiding his eyes.
Ryan frowned not liking those words coming from her.
“We should break up.” Mary slowly got out, the words hurt to even say, she waited years for Ryan but now it felt it had to be done. Maybe if they aren’t together Will might forgive them.
Ryan’s heart stopped and he felt his stomach drop, “What?” Ryan uttered out looking at her with the saddest expression.
“It’s my fault Will is ignoring you and he’s your best friend and i’m messing that all up.” Mary fiddled with her bracelets avoiding looking at Ryan because she couldn’t look at the sad expression she knows is on his face.
Ryan immediately realized Mary didn’t want to break up rather she thinks this is all her fault, “Your my best friend.” Ryan said simply stepping closer to her and gently put his hand under her chin.
“Look at me Baby.” Ryan gently lifted her chin, “We are not breaking up because of this. It is not our fault for the way Will chooses to continue to react.”
“But it’s my fault that this is happening and-”Mary tried to protest to protest and Ryan softly shushed her.
“No. We are not breaking up.” Ryan told her firmly, He cupped her face looking at her seriously, “I love you Mary and i don’t care if the entire world doesn’t approve of our relationship i am not giving up on you or us ever.”
Mary pursued her lips and softly mumbled back, “I love you too.”
“There’s my girl.” Ryan started to smile and softly brushed his thumb over her cheekbone.
Mary managed a weak smile.
“It is not your fault, yes we could have told Will earlier but we both wanted to tell him in person and we did not have many chances, He’s hurt and angry but that does not mean this is your fault Honey.” Ryan softly spoke to her in a reassuring and soothingly tone.
Mary slowly nodded fiddling with the bottom of Ryan’s shirt and she leaned forward burrowing her face in his chest making Ryan sigh relieved and wrap his arms around her tightly.
Ryan pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head, he was never letting go of Mary not because of this and it’s starting to annoy him how Will is acting and ghosting him.

Mary rubbed her eyes as she turned over and frowned seeing Ryan not in bed but the spot was still warm.
She glanced up seeing Ryan walking into her room holding a tray and a bouquet of purple wildflowers.
Ryan gave her a smile as he sat down on the bed setting the tray down and leaned over brushing his hand through her hair and gave her a kiss, “Happy Valentine’s Day Sweetheart.”
Mary gives him the biggest smile she has had in days, she’s never celebrated Valentine’s day romantic before and Ryan had asked her to be his Valentine last week.
“Happy Valentine’s day Love.” Mary mumbled one second against his lisp before she quickly got out of bed and went into her closest grabbing two things and came back out.
Ryan smiled softly seeing her holding a bouquet of blue flowers with one purple flowers in the middle and a box.
She set the things on the nightstand before getting back into bed and curling into Ryan’s side.
She saw her favorite caramel pancakes and ice coffee, “Thank you.” She mumbled softly.
Ryan hummed in reply kissing the top of her head, “You can open it.” He notified her eyes on the little black box with a purple ribbon.
Mary softly opened the box and gasped softly seeing a very dainty pair of dangling earrings with purple crystals, they were small enough she could wear them everyday and not take them off for hockey, “Ry they are beautiful.” She softly picked up one of the earrings.
“Just like you.” Ryan mumbled against her cheek kissing her there softly and felt her start blushing.
Ryan pushed her hair back and helped her put in her earrings and smiled lovingly and pressed a kiss to the top of her nose.
They were heading to a fancy lunch for Valentine’s day as they have a game tonight. They both have had a couple of hard days the last few days but their day together on Valentine’s day made them both happy and feel better for the first time since the Beanpot.
Ryan smiled softly and lovingly seeing how excited Mary was as they walked to breakfast in Missouri.
Ryan kissed the back of her hand as their hands were intertwined on their walk.
Ryan and Mary flew out to Missouri right after their game last night getting in extremely late and going to sleep immediately.
They were in Missouri for the Hobey Baler tonight as they both are finalists, Ryan really just wanted Mary to win.
Mary was excited for breakfast because her parents, sister and all of their best friends will be there expect for Gabe. Zeev, Cole and Hutson were all here for the frozen four, Zeev had lost last night and would be heading to Minnesota after the Hobey Baker as he is also a finalist.
Teddy and James came out for the weekend not wanting to miss the chance to see most of their friends.
Ryan’s family couldn’t make it out but he was totally fine with it as the Smith’s have always been family to him and he has Mary.
“Mara!” James beamed seeing her walk in with Ryan.
Mary giggled as James rushed over picking her and spinning her around a bit, Mary has hated the last few weeks being away from her best friend, “Jamesy!”
Ryan was quickly pulled in a hug by Hutson making Ryan look fond as he hugged him softly back.
Mary was tackled in a hug by Cole and Teddy the second James let go of her as w hugged Ryan next.
“Mary Mary!” Teddy and Cole bit cheered making her giggle and hug them tighter.
“Huts!” Mary beamed seeing her best friend who will sooner than later be her teammate again.
“Hi Mary!” Hutson beamed just as happily back.
“Alright everyone move over i’m hugging my sister.” Grace playfully scolded the boys who quickly listened and Grace and Mary beamed at each other with their matching smiles and quickly lunged at each other hugging each other tightly.
“You too Ry.” Grace opened one of her arms and Ryan quickly hugged both of the Smith girls.
Ryan and Mary both sighed happily hugging Grace.
It made Mary feel better that she had at least one sibling who still liked her.
Mary looked so happy as she hugged her parents last.
Mary sat down in between James and Grace and Ryan understood sitting down next to Grace with Hutson next to him.
“Tell us everything!” Teddy looked so happy wanting to hear everything about their lives in Washington even if he heard everything on face time already.
Ryan and Mary spent most of the breakfasts telling everyone everything.
Ryan looked so fond seeing James and Mary quickly rambling to each other, he knew how much Mary missed her best friend and he understands because he missed Gabe the same, once it was the same with Will.
Everyone besides the Smith parents ended up in Mary and Ryan’s room till everyone would had to leave and her ready for the Hobey Baker.
Ryan just shook his head as James and Grace quickly stole the spots next to Mary as Zeev sprawled out on the large charge. Cole and Hutson were sharing the couch as Teddy laid out on the edge of the bed and Ryan laid using Mary’s leg as a pillow as she played with his hair.
Zeev started a facetime with Gabe and they all started catching up.
“Has anyone spoken to him? Or has he spoken to anyone?” Cole asked hesitatingly after almost two hours in the room.
The room got quieter at his question all of them understanding who Cole meant.
“No.” Grace said with a firm tone she was not happy with her brother at the moment.
Mary swallowed and Ryan reached up grabbing her hand squeezing softly.
“He texted me before my first game.” Gabe spoke up through the phone, he didn’t want Mary and Ryan to know because he knew this would hurt them.
Mary slowly blinked realizing her own brother didn’t text her before her first NHL game but he could text Gabe.
Heck Macklin texted her a bunch before her first game.
“He texted you.” Ryan said lowly with a frown remembering how hurt Mary was to realize her brother ignored her on such a big day.
James softly rubbed Mary’s arm seeing her tense.
“Yes. I didn’t respond.” Gabe said softly and frowned seeing Mary and Ryan through the screen.
“Good.” Grace look firm, Will needs to start apologizing and he needs to start with Mary and Ryan.
“Uh i should shower.” Mary cleared her throat and got out of the bed heading to the bathroom making everyone share a look as the door closed.
“I’ve got her.” Ryan reassured standing up an everyone believed him and started getting up to head to their own rooms to her ready.
Ryan did cheer Mary up snd got to wash her hair which he loved and then they started to get ready.
Mary had an all back dress to her mid calf with a high neck and no sleeves.
Ryan stepped up bending her softly zipping her dress up as she put the belt around her waist with a large gold buckle.
Mary grabbed Ryan’s tie and stared to tie it for him, he was in a black suit with a white shirt.
Ryan kissed her cheek in thank and led her to the bed for Mary to sit down as he kneeled down in front of her slipping on her back heels with gold hardware on her.
Mary put her lips out as Ryan started standing back and Ryan leaned down kissing her.
Ryan made her spin around and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, “Beautiful as always My Love.”
Mary smiled happily at him and gently pushed back his hair.
Ryan was very smug that they were matching.
Mary and Ryan headed to where the awards are held and saw all of their friends, Grace and Mary’s parents there.
Mary sat down in between Zeev and Ryan up on the stage. Ryan had his foot resting against her heel as they waited for the award to be called.
“Mary Smith!”
Mary slowly blinked and broke out into a smile as she stood up and Ryan was pulling her into a hug quickly. He discreetly pressed a soft kiss to her cheek, “Knew it would be you, so proud of you Baby.”
Mary smiled even more because of him and she turned around immediately getting pulled into a tight hug by Zeev.
Mary walked over and got handed the trophy, she was the first woman to ever win the Hobey Baker.
She glanced out at the audience and smiled seeing all people her for her, all of them looking so excited.
Mary took a bit to finish media and found everyone waiting for her.
“My little sister is a Hobey Baker winner!” Grace beamed hugging Mary so tightly rocking her side it side as she pressed multiple kisses to Mary’s hair.
Mary laughed happily at Grace’s actions.
James pulled her into a hug next squeezing her so tightly, “I knew i! i knew it!”
Mary looked over after hugging everyone but Ryan and her face softened seeing Ryan holding a bouquet of purple flowers.
Ryan kissed her cheek softly as he handed her the flowers giving her the proudest smile, “My Hobey Baker winner.”
Mary and Ryan might have gotten less than twenty four hours in Missouri but it was so worth it and Mary left feeling happier than she truly has felt in a bit, she was so happy she got see all of them.
Ryan walked into the room for the teams breakfast in Pittsburgh alone.
“Leno where’s your other half?” Tom called out as those two rookies are never apart.
“Tired getting some more sleep.” Ryan half told the truth as Mary woke up with an ear infection that she has been trying to prevent but unfortunately it came anyways which she wasn’t to surprised by with how much she has traveled the last few weeks.
“She okay?” Dylan asked Ryan quietly as Ryan was getting some breakfast for Mary and him.
Ryan gave a soft nod not wanting to let tell the team Mary’s things without her here, it is not his place.
Ryan quickly headed back to the room, the room had the curtains fully closed making the room fully black and completely quiet, Mary was under the blankets with a pillow over her head.
Ryan sat down on the edge of the bed setting the breakfasts on the nightstand. Ryan softly set a hand on Mary’s back rubbing softly, “Hi my sweet girl.” Ryan very quietly spoke.
Mary just made a soft sound in reply.
“You want to try and eat a few bites? Maybe some coffee?” Ryan softly spoke to her hoping she won’t say no to coffee because than he knows it is bad.
“Later?” Mary whispered very softly.
“Of course.” Ryan easily agreed and didn’t care to eat when Mary wasn’t feeling for good, he laid down softly next to her wrapping his arms around her and resting his chin on her shoulder and kissed her cheek very softly.
Ryan just held her rubbing her side as she fell in and out of sleep for a while.
Ryan got her to a have a few bites of toast around lunch time but she couldn’t do much else.
Mary stayed in bed until the last possible moment and she took some Advil and put some ear drops in and got ready for the game.
Mary slipped a pair of sunglasses on and winced as she stepped out side the hotel and how loud it got, she can’t wear her headphones because of her ear which makes everything else.
“Come on my love.” Ryan softly mumbled wrapping an arm around her waist and guiding her out of the hotel and to the bus getting many concerned looks from the team.
Mary took the window and used Ryan’s shoulder as a pillow.
“You okay Smith?” Pierre asked concerned as he walked by.
Mary gave a tiny thumbs up.
Ryan squeezed her hand.
Mary walked into the locker room a bit slower than usual and immediately changed into a pair of Ryan’s sweatpants and her hoodies.
She sat on the floor leaning on her stall covering her face with a towel and she closed her eyes.
“You going to warm up Mary?” Dylan asked her softly knowing something is up with how Mary is acting and how protective Ryan is right now.
“Not today.” Mary mumbled softly as she doesn’t like to warm up a lot on bad ear days.
“Okay you need anything kid?” Dylan crouched down frowning in concern.
“The lights off?” Mary whispered.
“That i can do.” Dylan lowered his voice, “I can kick all the boys out too so it’s quieter.” Dylan whispered.
Mary’s lip quirked up, “Thank you Dyl.”
“Anytime kiddo.” Dylan whispered patting her hand softly and got up turning the lights all off and kicking everyone out of the locker room to go warm up.
“Thank you.” Ryan looked grateful at Dylan. Dylan patted his shoulder as they were the last to walk out of the locker room.
Mary was the last on the ice for warmups and first off.
“You okay?” Spencer pulled her aside before the first period.
Mary slowly nodded, “Fine coach, ear.” Mary mumbled knowing her coach knows about her ear.
“Okay you tell me when you’re done or need a break, this game is not important.” Spencer gave her a serious look.
Mary nodded in reply and headed onto the ice.
She leaned over on the bench lowering her head a bit to hide from the lights as her tinted visor can only do so much.
“You alright kid?” Ovi leaned over asking her and she winced at how loud his tone is.
Mary just nodded.
Mary was sluggish the entire game and didn’t play at all during the last few minutes in the third.
Ryan leaded her down the tunnel to her stall, “Let’s do your drops.” Ryan helped her sit down and took her helmet off and grabbed the drops.
Mary tiled her head to the side and Ryan easily did her ear drops.
“Mary?” Dylan asked confused as most of the team looked confused seeing Ryan putting drops on her ears.
Mary gave Ryan a look to explain she couldn’t right now.
“Mary has half of her hearing in her right ear and she’s having a flare up.” Ryan explained to the team and he shocked the team as none of them knew or could even tell.
“You’re half deaf in your ear?” Pierre asked shocked he didn’t know and he’s been living with them for weeks.
Ovi frowned a bit realizing he talks really loud and that probably doesn’t help.
It made sense why Mary always has left side to everyone and rarely had anyone but Ryan on her right side even on the ice.
“Since i was two.” Mary mumbled very quietly.
Mary didn’t have to answer anymore questions as she went to shower and Ryan answered a few questions as the team wanted to know how to help Mary.
She sighed in relief as she sat down in the airplane a little while later, she was ready to head back to Washington and stay in bed till she feels better as than after it will be playoffs as the game they just played was the last of the regular season.
Mary’s lip quirked up noticing how no one really turned on any lights on the plane and everyone was quieter than normal.
Grace opened Mary’s bedroom door and shook her head not even surprised to see Ryan cuddling with her as they both slept.
Grace didn’t even know when Ryan ended up coming over but she did expect him to knowing how attached those two are.
She closed the door quietly letting Mary and Ryan keep sleeping.
Ryan slowly blinked away squinting as the sun was hitting his face and he blinked awake remembering he had fell asleep with Mary and he smiled softly as her hair softly tickled his cheek.
He slept in Mary’s childhood room for the first time since they got together. The first ever actually as all the times he had a slept here over the years was with the living room, Will’s room or the guest room.
Ryan had always loved just sleeping next to Mary since when they were just friends and getting to date her and cuddle with her too is a dream come true for him.
He never thought he would get to end up like this with Mary but he was glad he gets to. Ryan closed his eyes kissing the top of her head as his hand rubbed her back softly.
Ryan just kept rubbing her back softly and looking at her softly watching her look so peaceful as she slept till he watched her began to wake up.
Mary grumbled a bit cuddling closer to her boyfriend feeling him kissing the side of her head.
Mary didn’t say anything for a while as she began to wake up and enjoyed the peaceful silence and cuddles.
She rubbed her eyes and slowly moved her head to look up at Ryan.
“Well good morning my sleeping beauty.” Ryan teased with his raspy voice leaning down to kiss her as he couldn’t care less that they haven’t brush their teeth yet.
Mary hummed softly kissing him back and she squealed softly as Ryan flipped them around and her back hit the bed with him over her.
Once Ryan and Mary showered and Mary had some of Ryan’s clothes so he didn’t have to head back to his house.
Ryan leaned against her bathroom counter watching her brush out her blonde hair. He loves the outfit she had on today, a pair of purple flowy pants and a white simple cropped tank top.
He pushed off the counter kissing her head as she tied off her second braid that framed her face.
Ryan wrapped his arms around her from behind her neck softly kissing her neck making her hum and tilt her head the opposite way before the door bell ring.
Mary smiled slightly amused as Ryan was immediately groaning loudly and burying his face in her shoulder.
“Come on my love we can continue this later.” Mary patted his arm softy and started pulling him out of her room and firm the stairs. She knew her parents and sister were already gone for the day.
Ryan groaned but let her drag him out of her room and to the front door where most of their friends were waiting.
Gabe, James, Cole and Teddy were all standing out side holding bags and drink trays for breakfast.
“Teds!” Mary grinned brightly seeing one of the best friend’s that she hasn’t her able to see in a bit.
“Mary!” Teddy beamed back quickly and he stated toward hugging her fast but being careful of the bag of food he was holding.
Mary gave his shoulder a soft squeeze as she pulled back and welcomed her friends into her house for one last casual hang out before everyone started leaving for the summer.
Luckily for Mary at least Teddy lived near her. All of her friends do live kinda close but not the close where they are a short drive distance away rather a short fly away. She would see her whole friend group anyways soon when they end up all meeting up together for a vacation.
James tossed an arm over Mary’s shoulder pulling her into his side making her smile leaning into her best friend’s side.
Gabe and Ryan sat on one side of couch true first with Teddy plopping down on the fluffy carpet. Cole sat on the large chair and James and Mary sat together on the other side of the couch together.
Everyone got their food and drinks and started eating in the living room.
They were missing Hutson who was at Worlds and they have all been missing Will for a while now making everyone used to Will no longer being near them.
“So tell us all the gossip.” Cole piped up with a bright mischievous grin. Everyone’s schedules have been so busy it’s being while since most of them have been able to catch up together in person or on facetime.
Ryan and Mary shared a look as Ryan rolled her eyes.
“Oh come on you two! There’s so much gossip you both have from your new team tell us!” Cole complained very dramatic as always.
Gabe shook his head chuckling softly because it was so Cole.
“I did not miss you.” Ryan spoke bluntly making Cole gasp and Teddy start laughing.
Mary just smiled leaning her head on James’s shoulders and glanced back at Ryan who gave her a quick wink.
“Or we could talk about your last date.” Teddy spoke looking at Cole with a mischievous smile as he tossed his arms under his head.
Cole scowled at Teddy’s reminder.
“Oh do tell.” Ryan perked up and started grinning. Cole and his failed attempts with girls and dates will never not be amusing.
“Oh Coley.” Mary shook her head amused not surprised to hear Cole had another bad date. She could feel James laughing next to her.
“It wasn’t that bad!” Cole tried to protest and got many disbelieving looks, “Okay it wasn’t good.”
Cole just shook his head as his friends all started laughing making him reluctantly start grinning.
The six of them sat around the living room for awhile talking and laughing before they ended up all going out for lunch before returning back to the Smith’s house for a couple more hours before everyone started leaving.
Ryan left but of course ended up coming back again to sleep with Mary.
“Babe! You ready?” Ryan called out as he clipped his watch on and tucked his phone into his pocket.
“Yeah!” Mary called back opening the closet door and spun around letting Ryan see her back and the dress she couldn’t zip up.
Ryan walked over pressing a kiss to the bottom of her neck and zipped up her purple sun dress, simple dress but looked beautiful on Mary and Ryan loved when she wears her sun dresses.
“I just need my sandals and white purse.” Mary told Ryan quickly going to grab her white sandals.
Ryan grabbed her white purse on the dresser and grabbed her black purse taking the things out putting them in the white purse knowing that’s what she would have done.
Mary turned around and her whole body softened seeing Ryan easily switching over she purse, no has done that for her before.
Mary quickly walked over grabbing Ryan’s face turning him to her as she stood on her tippy toes kissing her boyfriend. Ryan blinked with a happy smile as she pulled away leaning back down, “What was that for beautiful girl?” Ryan asked not they he was complaining but he loves when Mary kisses him randomly.
“Thank you for being my perfect boyfriend.” Mary cupped his cheek smiling lovingly up at her guy. Ryan kissed her hand before leaning into her hand.
Ryan blinked realizing the kiss was because he switched her purses, “I’ll switch your purse every time if you kiss me like that.” Ryan said with a flirty tone and soft smile.
Marys lips quirked up scrunching her nose up at him, “I’ll kiss you like that anytime.” Mary softly flirted back making Ryan’s light up happily.
“That’s my girl.” Ryan whispered back and gently leaned down pressing a soft kiss to her lips before kissing the tip of her nose softly.
Mary smiled back and grabbed his hand as they started walking out of their room and heading down stairs getting in the car and Ryan drove them to the Strome’s house.
Ryan opened the door for Mary holding her purse and grabbing her hand as they headed up to the front door.
“Mary!” Two little voices immediately cheered as Tayler opened the front door.
Mary laughed and kneeled down as the two younger girls rushed over to her hugging her, “Hi girls.” Mary squeezed them both back.
“Hi you two.” Ryan gave them both head pats making the two little girls smile at him.
“Hi Mary’s boyfriend!” Weslie beamed at Ryan making him laugh as Emerson gave him a wave.
“Come on we set up the table!” Weslie grabbed Mary’s hand as Emerson put her hands up to Mary making Mary pick her up setting her on her hip and letting Weslie pull her inside.
Ryan shook his head amused as his girlfriend was stolen immediately.
“Hi Dyl, Tayler!” Mary smiled at the two at the door as Weslie pulled her inside and to the playroom.
“Hi Mary.” Tayler looked amused.
Ryan said hi to them as he stepped inside.
“You need any help?” Ryan asked the couple knowing they are making dinner.
“Go play with the girls.” Dylan told Ryan knowing it will make his girls happier.
Ryan just shrugged and set down Mary’s purse at the table before heading towards the playroom and paused at the door watching.
Mary had a crown on and was holding up a tiny tea cup.
Ryan smiled softly, he loves watching her with little kids and was excited for one day in the future if they ever make their own family.
He took a photo of Mary before walking in and sitting down on the floor next to Mary making her look at him with a smile as Weslie got up and set a crown on Ryan’s head. Ryan just smiled not even fighting it as Emerson handed him a tea cup too.
Mary giggled covering her mouth as Ryan pretended to take a sip of the fake tea.
Ryan gave her a wink his eyes softening at her giggles.
Mary and Ryan both really enjoyed having a tea party with the girls.
Weslie made Mary sit next to her during dinner and Ryan sat next to Mary and Emerson.
Tayler took her girls to the bath after dinner as they both got food all of over them leaving Mary and Ryan to help Dylan clean up dinner.
“Alright spill you two.” Dylan said noticing the shared looks between them and he pointed for them to sit back down at the table and he sat down with them.
Ryan gave her a nod knowing she had talked to Dylan about this topic already.
“We have a dinner in two days.” Mary told him as she grabbed Ryan’s hand, “With my family and Will.”
Dylan nodded in understanding, “Did you say yes knowing he is going to be there?”
Ryan nodded, “We both haven’t forgiven him yet but thought maybe a dinner could be a step for something.”
“And you’re both nervous.” Dylan looked knowingly.
Mary sighed nodding.
“It isn’t going to be easy fixing your guys relationships with him.” Dylan said rather bluntly knowing they will both appreciate it.
“He hurt you both immensely and that takes time for that to go away and to be fixed, so it’s okay to be nervous about that dinner and it would he okay if you couldn’t go or even left early but you both were the bigger person by just saying yes to going.” Dylan told them more gently.
Mary nodded softly as Ryan titled his head and then nodded.
“You both forgive on your time.” Dylan reminded them sternly.
“Thanks Dyl.” Ryan muttered grateful.
“Anytime my rookies.” Dylan gave them a silly grin.
Mary tucked her hair behind her ear as she looked in the mirror, She had a red and black plaid suit on with simple black loafers.
Today was her first game against Boston University and also her first game ever against Hutson and Cole, which she knew is gonna be hard especially with how important these games are.
Ryan walked up behind her tucking his chin on her shoulder and his hand sprawled around her hip and front.
Mary closed her eyes relaxing into Ryan.
She had just had a small call with Will, who was telling her all about the bet he made with Macklin and he needed her to win the two games and she had hoped to talk to him longer but he was heading to lunch with Macklin.
“You okay baby?” Ryan asked softly knowing Will has unknowingly been kinda blowing Mary off and not paying the most attention and Mary has become a bit sad about it, Ryan also knew Will wasn’t doing it intentionally because Will wouldn’t ever do that but it still made Ryan annoyed.
Mary softly hummed, “I just miss him.” Mary knew if she talked to Will he would immediately try to fix it but she just wasn’t ready to admit how hard is it be this far from Will, a time difference that really makes to be able to find to talk to him and how can she tell him she misses when he use to tell her everything like he is doing with Macklin right now.
She knew it would be hard with Will in San Jose but she didn’t expect it to be this hard, she didn’t want to say anything and make his rookie season any harder than it already was and she wanted to tell Will everything about Ryan and felt so so guilty that she hasn’t told him yet.
Ryan kissed her cheek not pressing, “Come on.” Ryan softly guided her by waist through the door.
Mary blinked softly and shook her head clearing her thoughts as she leaned into Ryan as he guided them out of the apartment and to his car.
He closed the door once she got into the passenger seat and he got into the drivers seat.
He drove them to their favorite Starbucks and grabbed the three drinks quickly before getting back in the car.
Mary fiddled with Ryan’s hand as he drove to the dorms and James walked out quickly heading to the car and getting into the back seat, “Hi Mara.” James grinned squeezing her shoulder making her set her hand over his hand giving him a soft smile and James patted Ryan’s shoulder next before sitting down.
Mary handed James the drink they got him and soon started rambling with James.
Ryan sighed a bit in relief seeing Mary loosing some tension in her shoulders rambling with James. He smiled at her laughter and was so glad for James right now.
Mary walked in between them as they headed into the BU rink.
Ryan watched as Teddy quickly stole James and Mary the second they stepped into the locker room and he nodded approvingly knowing they will help Mary keep her mind of Will and the three definitely need each other for this weekend with playing Cole and Hutson for the first time.
“She okay?” Gabe asked standing next to Ryan looking at Mary like a protective brother, he knew what Will was doing and he to couldn’t blame Will as Will has become slowly distant from everyone since the start of the season and they all understood but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt especially to Mary.
Will was not intentionally distancing himself, not yet anyways.
Ryan sighed licking his bottom lip, “I think so.” He looked uncertain but he couldn’t do much more to help her.
Gabe nodded in understanding, “Just keep being there for her.” Ryan nodded in agreement.
Mary stepped onto the ice with James and Teddy and she frowned sadly seeing Cole and Hutson on the ice but across the ice form her.
Hutson gave her a sad wave and Cole frowned not liking having to play against his best friends.
Mary waved a bit back.
“Ready for this?” James asked softly glancing at his best friend as they were about to play against two of their best friends.
Teddy gave her a soft nudge and she glanced at the two with a small smile, “Ready as i can be.”
Mary was playing mostly with James and Ryan going into the game and it was really weird playing against Cole and Hutson.
First period BC was down 1-2.
Mary was on the ice when Teddy hopped over the boards and she passed him the puck making him quickly flick the puck into the net and tying the game back up.
Mary and Teddy crashed into each other laughing.
A few minutes later she was on the ice with Ryan and James and she was on the wing with the puck and passed the puck right in front of the net perfectly setting up Ryan and he hit the puck into the goal.
Ryan patted her side as she crashed into his side.
Mary got a goal on her next shift from a pass from Ryan. She smiled shaking her head as Ryan gently knocked their helmets together.
BC was leading 4-2 heading into the third.
Mary spun around Hutson on the penalty kill talking the puck from him and passing to Ryan who got a breakaway and a short handed goal.
Ryan gave her a wide grin as she skated over and hugged her so tightly.
The net was empty and there was thirty seconds left when Mary got the puck and she could have got an empty net goal but passed to Ryan who got a goal and his hat trick.
BC won game one against BU 6-2.
Mary, James and Teddy made sure to see Cole and Hutson before they left even if it was only a minute.
January 25, 2025
Mary was sitting in her stall before game two against BU and she was starring at the ground bitting her lip, she didn’t have her headphones on and she stopped warming up earlier than usually.
Ryan walked into the locker room that was pretty empty as everyone was still warming up and paused seeing Mary just starring at the floor.
He noticed this morning she was off a little bit and kept shifting a bit uncomfortable and he knew her ear was bothering her.
He walked over and stood in front of her making her glance up and he softly grabbed her hand pulled her up, “Come here baby.”
He brought her out of the locker room and to a quieter room, he knew he couldn’t do anything to help her with her ear but she looked like she needed a hug and a quiet room always helps.
Mary softly wrapped her arms around him and she shifted her head around accidentally pressing her good ear on his chest and she paused feeling a lot of sound be blocked out in a rally good way and she fully melted as she could only hear his heartbeat and not any other sounds that were making her ear feel worse and worse.
Mary didn’t know how she had never done this before but it might just become her favorite thing, “You block out all the sound.” Mary melted more and more feeling a bit better already.
Ryan raised an eyebrow realizing she had her ear on his chest making her not have to hear a lot of other sounds, “Good.” Ryan hummed happy that he found something he could do to help her as he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head.
Mary whined a bit as Ryan started pulling away.
“I know baby.” Ryan soothed smoothing. hand over her bubble braids, “You can do this all you want after the game and whenever you want.”
Mary sighed but nodded, “Love you.” Mary mumbled softly against his chest.
“I love you too.” Ryan kissed the top of her head before Mary reluctantly let go of him and they headed into back to locker room.
Mary shook her head out feeling her ear already feeling a bit better and she was a tiny bit annoyed she never knew that would help but it was good to know now.
BC was up 1-0 heading into the end of the third period after an early goal from Teddy after Mary passed him the puck.
Mary shook her head as she heard a whistle being blown and a scrum in front of the net, she glanced next to her seeing Hutson standing next to her and they were absolutely not fighting each other so they her stood next to each other trying to not laugh at the ridiculous scrum in front of them.
Mary patted Hutson’s arm as everyone started heading to their own benches.
Ryan passed to Mary for this empty net and she got the empty net goal this game.
