Opposition afraid of redelineation exercise in Sarawak, says BN lawmaker
KUALA LUMPUR, October 30, 2014:
Pakatan Rakyat is afraid it will fail to lessen Barisan Nasional’s hold in Sarawak if a redelineation exercise of state constituencies is held in the state.
Sri Aman Member of Parliament Masir Anak Kujat said this was evident in the suggestion by the Opposition coalition for assemblymen on both sides of the divide to reject the proposal to add 11 state assembly seats — all in rural areas — as it had previously failed to penetrate rural areas in the state.
The Sarawak state assembly has received a draft Bill for the redelineation exercise that would increase the state seats from the current 71 to 82.
Masir claimed that PR did not want to support the exercise because the urban areas were “cramped” and lack room for divisions.
“However, in rural areas, where majority of the Bumiputeras were staunch BN supporters, PR don’t stand a chance,” Masir said when met by The Rakyat Post today.
Redelineation exercises, he argued, had to be conducted in rural areas as Sarawak was a huge state, making it difficult for assemblymen to carry out their responsibilities.
Kota Samarahan lawmaker Rubiah Wang supported the exercise as she reasoned that the government’s programmes could be conducted efficiently if the state seats were smaller.
The Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu politician said although there were 71 state assembly seats in Sarawak, the numbers need to be increased to provide for a “proper, systematic and efficient management”.
“What is more important is that we are able to provide the required services as demanded by the people,”
Earlier today, PKR strategy director, Sim Tze Tzin had urged the Sarawak state assemblymen to reject suggestions to conduct redelineation exercises in the state which is expected to be debated at the Sarawak state assembly from Nov 11 to Nov 19.
The Bayan Baru MP also claimed that the adding of seats was a BN strategy to solve its political crisis with Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (TERAS) which had nine assemblymen.
