paul is deep in thought as he scrolls through news articles on his phone. he shouldn't be doing this here , on his own personal mobile , but he hadn't had time to catch the latest news on the murdered girl that morning ( thanks to his wife needing help with the kids ). so that's what he's doing now. tearing his attention from the screen , it takes him several beats to realize that someone is speaking to him. his gaze locks on the man before him , annoyed at the interruption but trying not to let his mask slip.

' why do you say that? '

"Well, it's not very good for anyone, not just you, of course."

He shrugged his shoulders with a good-natured smile and he nodded down at the article on the phone in the stranger's hand, continuing, "The overconsumption of news media, for example. Tragic and upsetting events are always dominating the headlines, which gets people paranoid and suspicious of the people around them. Even if they're relatively safe in a suburban bubble." He took a sip of his coffee. Striking up a conversation with a stranger seemed like the best way to curb boredom while he waited for an update from his colleague on where to meet him.

"There's just as many good things happening in the world as bad, but you don't see too many heartwarming stories trending on social media." He gave the other man a cynical smirk and gestured above to the TV mounted in the upper corner that was featuring a piece about a political scandal. "What is it Don Henley said? 'We love dirty laundry.'"

HIS VERY PRESENCE HAUNTED HER, EVEN IN HER WAKING MOMENTS, before she knew him. Before she saw the monster hidden beneath the iris of his gaze; it's as if she's still asleep, dreaming of the nightmare that was his entire being. She can't help but wonder if his victims felt the same way, right before he striked. That sudden feeling in the pit of one's stomach just before they're attacked, already doomed and imprisoned beneath the conundrum of inevitability. Much like the fear which continued to linger, afraid of their own mortality, but she isn't afraid. Not in the way she should have been when sight became a reality. He was there, standing right before her like he had not long ago in the halls of the precinct. If only she knew then what she knew now, the words he had written in her personal journal now more so screaming in the back of her mind. Stroppy Stella, he wrote, angry and misunderstood. Lashing out against a world of men. To this day, those words sent an involuntary shiver down the length of her spine. How well I know you now. Her jaw clenches, but she knows she's unable to make a scene right here and now in front of so many people.

It'd be like screaming 'fire' in a crowded room. Not here, but she can't let him get away that easily either and so, she steps forward, heels clicking against the linoleum and with every step she can feel her breath catching in her throat. If he runs, perhaps that would make things easier for her; make him more noticeable to everyone else around them. Draw the attention in his direction and make him seen, some part of her wishes that he would.

human beings are a composition of nuances     some less subtle than others     (     the minute grinding of molars or a creased brow versus the clearing of a throat     ,     for instance     .  .  .     )     just as some people are more in tune with them .     jane himself has turned the act of catching     &     interpreting even the most elusive into an art form     :     a finely honed craft in which he can seemingly pull   EVERYTHING   from   nothing .     its second nature at this point so jane can’t help but catch the waver in cadence     ,     a tightening in pitch .     not one for jokes then     -     interesting .
