The New Pornographers released their debut album on 21 November 2000.
Formed in 1997, the album took more than 3 years to include as its members were busy in other projects. Dan Bejar (Destroyer) and A.C. Newman (Zumpano) were the main songwriters, with contributions by Neko Case on 4 songs. Bassist John Collins (The Evaporators) produced.
Despite strong reviews and the Juno Award for Album of the Year in Canada, Mass Romantic failed to find an audience.
