This past two weeks, I've been working on this copy of Caroling by Mykola Pymonenko. The original painting was looted during the last Russian invasio, and at the moment, its whereabouts are unknown; so, I am working with a low quality image found online, which is most likely missing a lot of detail. This is actually the second painting from this painter that I make, and probably not the last, since art from Eastern Europe is an absolute favourite of mine.
And just FYI – master copies are NOT forgery copies. They are left unsigned, they are usually completely different in size from the originals, and there is zero effort in imitating the passing of time, or in reproducing the manufacturing of antique canvases. Master copies are a totally legitimate part of fine arts, which serves homage to history.
I work on modern canvas on board supports, with modern oil paints, and the only concession to history I make is to use a limited palette of paints that resembles the ones these painters used – but that is only because I am a nerd, not a forger of frauds.
In cases when paintings have been looted, bought privately, burnt, or destroyed, it is work of historical reconstruction, and to put my art diploma to the service of artists like Pymonenko is an absolute honour, and I can only hope I am a good enough to be worthy of the task.
