America's top food group Topco will test Mastercard's blockchain platform
As per recent reports, America’s retail food group, Topco Associates is all set to pilot Mastercard’s blockchain platform. The press release noted that Topco will soon test a traceability platform developed by logistics firm Envisible. Also, the Wholechain platform is powered by Mastercard’s blockchain-based Provenance Solution, which will be used by Topco to track the provenance of produce, meat, and seafood.
The food industry has been very active in terms of blockchain adoption. Major companies like Walmart and Migros have implemented blockchain in their retail operations. Recently, Walmart announced that it will use blockchain to keep track of Indian shrimp supply chains, while Migros announced that it will use TE-Food’s blockchain-based food traceability system for its products.
In a quest to enhance food safety, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been requested by Alex Manders, the head of blockchain solutions at Information Services Group (ISG) to outline clear guidelines on the use of blockchain-based applications in this industry. ISG also stated that the major hurdle in the application of.blockchain in the food industry is the lack of awareness regarding blockchain infrastructure.
