i kinda wanna make a mastodon acc... (i literally have the mastodon.social signup page up rn but im contemplating whether to...)

(also there's apparently different servers according to the guide i'm reading?????)

saw people talk about the fediverse on here and I just wanted to say:

PLEASE DONT SIGN UP TO MASTODON.SOCIAL/ANY OTHER HUGE INSTANCE

it's better to find a smaller better moderated instance that doesn't have as many scaling issues since huge instances like mastodon.social are struggling to handle this amount of users and centralizing the fedi on a few/one big instance(s) is bad

and no, you don't have to sign up to multiple instances if you have many interests/hobbies/whatever you can talk to most instances from any instance (unless you sign up to a shitty Nazi instance that gets defederated by everyone then honestly you deserve it lol)

also keep in mind Mastodon isn't the only project on the Fedivere! fedi is incredibly diverse and there's a ton of different projects focusing on different types of platforms, if you don't like mastodon, try a misskey or an akkoma instance! if you don't like the microblogging format at all you can try something completely different like pixelfed which is kinda like Instagram for the fediverse or peertube which focuses on videos similarly to youtube
