Maa Shailputri – Worship on Navratri Day 1
Navratri always begins with the worship of Maa Shailputri, the first form of Goddess Durga. Her name means “daughter of the mountains,” as she was born to King Himavat, the ruler of the Himalayas. She is also known as the reincarnation of Goddess Sati, who took birth again as Shailaputri after self-sacrifice in her previous life.
On Navratri Day 1, devotees worship Maa Shailaputri with deep devotion because she represents purity, patience, and courage. She rides a bull called Nandi and carries a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other, symbolizing strength and calmness together.
The Maa Shailputri Mantra is: “Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah” Chanting this mantra with faith is believed to remove negativity and bring peace, good health, and prosperity.
According to the Shailputri Mata Story, offering pure ghee on her feet during Shailputri Puja blesses the devotee with a healthy life. Red flowers, fruits, and bhog are also offered with devotion.
Maa Shailputri is associated with the Muladhara Chakra, the root of spiritual energy. Worshipping her helps devotees gain stability in life and prepares them to move forward on their spiritual journey throughout Navratri.
