Today in Chemistry we did maths drills.

Our teacher is trying to wean us off of our calculators because apparently paper 1 doesn't allow calculators.  Now, when the teacher handed out these worksheets, the class groaned and moaned and complained and whined.  One kid asked if we could use calculators.  Another asked if we could work in groups.

I used to do these for fun.

I would sit at the dining room table and my mom would time me, and I would finish in less than two minutes and she would grade my papers.  I was the fastest kid in my classes in elementary school and it made me feel so smart.

And today, when the only sheet I could finish in the time allowed was the addition sheet, I felt like a failure.  While kids around me were rolling their eyes and scoffing, complaining to their friends and saying that this was stupid, I was sitting there beating myself up over this.

We've all become so lazy.

I'm in Mathematical Studies, so we get to use our graphing calculators on both paper 1 and paper 2.  So we don't really have to worry about relying on our brains to do math.  But Chemistry SL is different.

I don't know why it bugged me so much, but it did.  We're going to keep doing drills and I'm going to start practicing at home.  I want to be able to do 100 problems in less than two minutes, no problem.

Maybe it's just because I have a superiority complex, but I feel like something more important happened today.  I just can't put my finger on it.
