Mathematicians in a nutshell
SEAS AND SKIES
Stop forcing a fish to fly
Stop forcing a bird to swim
God didn’t give fishes fins to wave through clouds
God didn’t give birds wings to move underwater
How many sparrows have drowned in the ocean?
How many dolphins have lost their lungs to breathe?
The fish was meant to explore the beauty of the sea
The beautiful depths and the corals under the surface
The bird was meant to glide through the sky
Fly over the horizon and the heaven’s view
How many artists dropped their brushes?
How many writers threw away their pens?
How many singers dropped their mics?
How many mathematicians left their equipment?
How many dancers abandoned their stage?
How many players left their jerseys behind?
Uncountable.
Let the fish swim
Let the bird fly
Today is May 12—International Women in Mathematics Day.
This day was established to commemorate the birthday of the great Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and to bring attention to the women who have been overlooked but have truly changed the history of mathematics.
Meanwhile, G1RLS, a new girl group, (un)officially debuted today. The group consists of four members: Sophie Germain, Ada Lovelace, Sofya Kovalevskaya, and Emmy Noether.
With “female wisdom and creativity” as their core concept, they will light up the stage with rationality, passion, freedom, and a vibrant, upward-striving vitality.
