Matheu reached a hand cautiously through the bars, gently caressing Harley’s cheek. I can’t. But I’m not worried about me. I really can’t stand to see you like this, he murmured sadly. I’m so sorry, Harley. This is all my fault.

You see boys, Vincenzo continued, finally addressing his prisoners. Soulmates in life means soulmates in death. I’d allow you to marry & spend eternity together. All would be peaceful, so long as you followed the rules. Yet you both are partners in another way, aren’t you? You’ve worked together, committing misdeeds & breaking laws in life. The skill set each of you bring with you could be quite useful to myself & the commander. Mr. Lancaster is good with his hands, building explosives & causing destruction merely for the thrill of it. Or should I say, Dr. Lancaster? And Mr. Durant, an expert at computers & security systems, hacking into them to asses the situation & work out the details. You are both so magnificent with your planning while proving you have little regard for others.

That’s not... Matheu started before Lord Fiore turned on his heel to face the younger vampire. 

Decisions, decisions, he chuckled. Commander Reyes, any thoughts?

Korey shrugged, a wicked grin pulling at the corners of his full lips. What good is love? I think I can make them loyal & obedient soldiers, Lord. Once I’m done with them, they will make wonderful additions to the militia. 

Vincenzo nodded, stepping closer to Korey. Then they are all yours. The king laid an assuring hand on the vampire’s strong shoulder. Leaning in, his voice was much lower. Keep an eye on them, commander. I believe that after your training, they would both be prime candidates as officers. But be mindful. They have a deep & unbreakable bond. While I don’t plan on it being broken, we need to be sure that they are just as loyal to us as they are to each other. Understood?

Well, what do you think, commander? Lord Fiore mused as he appeared out of the darkness. His piercing eyes traveled back & forth from one cell to the other, examining his newest subjects. We seem to have gotten twice as lucky after their little… mishap.

Moving closer to the bars, a wide smile spread across the king’s face. But what to do with them? he wondered aloud as the commander watched him eagerly. This was the first time Fiore hadn’t had an exact plan in place when someone new arrived. Of course, this was the first time two possible soldiers had arrived together after knowing each other in life. Soulmates or soldiers?

Why don’t you both shut the fuck up? the vampire groaned from outside of the cells. You’re giving me a fucking headache.

Mat growled to himself, shaking his head before glancing over his shoulder. Can dead people get headaches?

Lancaster, I... The commander stopped, balling both hands into tight fists before continuing. I continue to wonder if you could annoy me anymore than you already have. You’ll be pleased to know that you have not yet ceased to amaze.

Harley? Matheu repeated once more. Baby, are you okay?

And again, he was left no answer.

Come on, Harley. Please talk to me, the man pleaded desperately. He closed his eyes with a heavy sigh. This whole situation still seemed like nothing more than a bad dream. The full weight of it had yet to hit him. 

Not only had he changed his own life with one stupid mistake, he’d changed so many including that of the man who meant so much to him. But he had caused so much more than a change. He had ended it. His need for the thrill & fondness of the flame had cost the ultimate price. And now, though Harley sat less than 10 feet away, he was afraid it had cost him everything as the silence & steel bars were all that stood by him now.

Harley, I... He paused, not sure what he could say. Surely no words would make much of a difference now. I wish that ‘I’m sorry’ were enough. I wish that I could go back. I would if it meant saving you.

Could you please stop talking? the smaller man muttered quietly, finally looking over at his lover out of the corner of his eye.
