[Eleanor, Bernice, Phillip Joseph "Joe", Margaret, and Marion Mathisen were the children of Harvey J. and Rose Ellen "Nellie" (McClory) Mathisen. Harvey J. was born around 1869, probably in Evansville, MN, where his brother, George, lived about the time these photographs were taken. Nellie McClory Mathisen was born around 1874 in Ontario, Canada, to James and Margaret McClory of Ireland. Her siblings included Mary, Sara, and George, to whom these photographs may have been addressed.

In 1910, the Mathisens lived in North Dakota, but relocated after that to Portland, OR, where Harvey died on 17 Jul 1917. By 1930, Marion had married Russel Ferguson and her brother Joe was staying with them. Nellie moved in with her daughter Bernice, who had married Thomas C. Bailey. Joe Mathisen died in 1986 in San Mateo, CA.]
