(2/2) Here, Ethan with the 24-opening custom mat he created for his frame. Calling on his experience installing art, Ethan started with the key larger images he wanted framed in the center and worked his way outwards, making measurements and markings on the mat. “There’s a visual element to weighting the sizes of the images that is similar to what is done when you map the layout of an art installation,” says Ethan. He also states that making sure he cut the bevel in the correct direction with the mat-cutter was the most challenging part of making this mat -- if he made even one error, he would have start all over again! After cutting the mat openings, Ethan sanded and perfected the bevels using a bone tool. Square route: Phil Kennedy, who works in our Art Preservation department, uses a bone tool to burnish the bevel of a custom mat. This is just one step in our meticulous mat-making process; it comes after Phil has marked and cut the mat, and sanded the bevel down a bit.
