Movie Theory: The reason why Morpheus was recast in “The Matrix Resurrections” is because the real Morpheus is dead. Remember, he was killed in “The Matrix Online”, which the Wachowskis still consider canon to the series.

So, either the humans or the machines decided to recreate Morpheus inside the Matrix in order to reach Neo. The reason why his recreation is much younger is because the files used to create Morpheus were from when he was unplugged for the first time.

Morpheus being a digital recreation also explains why Trinity is here. She’s not real, she’s also a program that was designed to reach out to Neo.
