I'm thinking about how Matsudaira must have felt at the Shogun's death. How he failed at his job, his most important one, to protect his only "Boss". But even more, how he lost someone he probably considered as a son, or at least a nephew or something. He was the one to get him outside of the palace to change his mind and to show him the real world, the commoners' place.

More than anyone else, his job was to protect him, and he failed, even though so many people died to protect him. Even though everyone fulfilled their tasks to successfully and safely bring him to Kyou, Matsudaira failed to protect him there. And even though it wasn't really his fault because it was ShigeShige's choice to show himself unarmed to his allies, and that he would have probably been killed one way or another at some point, he'll forever live with the burden of having failed his friend, and the most important mission of his life.
