ALBUM REVIEW: Rare Futures ‘This Is Your Brain On Love’

Rare Futures, previously known by fans as Happy Body Slow Brain, is releasing their much-anticipated album, This Is Your Brain on Love, tomorrow. Not a lot about Rare Futures and their lead vocalist Matt Fazzi has changed besides their group’s name, as synthesizers and heavy rock influences still have a strong presence in their music. However, there are small tweaks and new creative differences that may make the new and improved band stand out.

Most of the tracks feature unique-sounding harmonies and vocal layers, creating an ambient and absorbing feel. The songs range from intense and potent to mellow and relaxed, yet it is difficult to differentiate songs. Echoing guitar riffs make common appearances, but an unconventional organ is also featured, making for an immersive listening experience.

First, Rare Futures released the music video for track five, “The Pressure”, one of the tracks on the new album, and it was incredible. The video is made entirely by stop-motion, and it is very creative, detailed and beautiful. It’s set in space and follows the protagonist, who journeys across a desolate, ruined planet and battles aliens and a female/lizard beast. The filmography, especially in the end, is breath-taking, and the song itself compliments the video.

The only reason I’m okay with giving a brief synopsis is because this is something that demands to be seen - in other words, if nothing else in this review catches your attention, at least check out the music video. You won’t be sorry.

Secondly, the album itself is a masterpiece.

Now, all music is art - however, not all music is so passion-driven and visionary. That’s what separates simple art from brilliance. It doesn’t have to necessarily be the best piece, but it’s a piece that speaks outside of the lyrics. This Is Your Brain on Love is so obviously inspired and heart-felt - so much thought and feeling went into every note and every beat of the drum and every word sung.

Fazzi’s voice is pleasant and easy to listen to, and he seemed to be experimenting with some unique harmonies in this particular project/album. It’s most noticeable to me in “Mercury (And Opposite Planets)”, track four, which is an awesome title, as well. Track two, “Reminding Me To Live”, boasts a nice melody and an electronic sound that I was definitely feeling.

This was such a cool listening experience, but my one complaint - during my first listen-through, every track seemed to blend together. Some would say this is good, and to a certain degree, it is. However, this meant that few things stood out to me, and everything sounded the same. Now, I’ve been able to pick out things I enjoyed about the album, but initially, I was barely able to differentiate the titles.

If Rare Futures continues down this path, I can see them going places. However, if the group decides to go in a different direction, I can still see it. With the way this industry ebbs and flows, artists can’t continue to produce the same things: Fazzi understands this. He will evolve and he will create whatever moves him, and that will be enough.
