The Eagle Huntress

The Q&A at Sunday's screening of "The Eagle Huntress." Mongolians Kazakhs ride into the snow-covered mountains with their eagles to hunt for fur and food. The young woman in the white fur hat is the first female eagle hunter, and this is the (beautifully photographed!) story of her courage and determination - and world-warming smile. Note the eagle on the left, who did not like when I got too close to take this photo.

So Much Talent, So Little Time!

Sundance is just around the corner and we're trying to set up great interviews for Press Play. But even though the festival is partly a giant PR stunt, logistics are a nightmare; just because someone really wants to talk to you, there are no guarantees. Even if you set it up there's still a good chance you won't be able to find each other!

We have our sights on Werner Herzog to talk about his new doc ("Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World"), Nate Parker, the writer, director and star of "Birth of a Nation" and the directors of the new doc about Robert Mapplethorpe. And we're definitely going to do a deep dive into Virtual Reality - the line up of VR films looks amazing.

And I'll be watching lots and lots (and lots) of movies for First Take! So - stay tuned!

Surviving Sundance with Matt Holzman & Sarah Pearce

KCRW Producer Matt Holzman spoke with Sundance Film Festival co-director Sarah Pearce about the survival list that festival management sends to new employees. It’s sort of a field guide to making the most out of this really amazing social and cultural event.

Probably the most helpful advice but otherwise notoriously ignored is, “Wear the right shoes – take your favorite boots to a shoe repair place and have them put hiking boot-type soles on them.”

KCRW's Matt Holzman previews Sundance

We asked KCRW Producer Matt Holzman about what film he was most interested in seeing year at the Sundance Film Festival. This is what he had to say:

Matt: I'm really looking forward to "CAPTIVATED: The Trials of Pamela Smart." This young woman's journey from private school girl to convicted murderer was all over the news in the early '90's; it was made into a TV movie starring Helen Hunt. But a great documentary - including a look at the news coverage and other media portrayals - may finally do this tragic story, uh, justice.
