Soul Sessions - 3/11/13 - Matt & Phreds
After a four month break, Soul Sessions returns to the intimate NQ venue Matt & Phreds with an impressive line-up including UK Soul sensation Josh Osho and L.A. based Wrabel with support from local vocalist Lauren Housley and her in-house band.
With such established artists playing in a live venue such as Matt & Phreds you can expect something special, a rawer, stripped-down and more intimate performance making Soul Sessions comeback a cosy and memorable affair. Not to be missed.
The mancunian music den is set to be alive with the sounds of soul from Josh Osho and renditions of tracks such as his breakthrough single 'Redemption Days ft. Ghostface Killa' . Wrabel has just wrapped up his debut album for Island Def Jam, look forward to him performing tracks like 'Ten Feet Tall'.
Good vibes and a Soul atmosphere.

SOUL SESSIONS Review- MATT + PHREDS (Manchester) By Dan Flynn
SOUL SESSIONS @ Matt and Phreds- Sunday 1st July 2012 Located in the heart of Manchester's thriving Northern Quarter, Matt and Phreds is a favourite of music lovers from all over the city. With its red painted walls, candlelit tables and live music six days a week, you would be forgiven for envisaging yourself situated in an underground Parisian Jazz hang out rather than a city centre backstreet in the North-West of England. The 'Soul Sessions' crew host the venue on the first Sunday of each month and base their events around live soul music. This week they welcomed guests 'Frameworks Band' and 'Pieces of a Man' both local bands and making their live debuts. All tables had sold out in advance following the success of previous 'Soul Sessions', a good 140 people in attendance for the Sunday evening showcase of soul. 'Frameworks' AKA Matthew Brewer, who has been producing hiphop/lo-fi material for a while recently had an EP drop on 'First word' records and also has an album in the pipeline due for release later this year. With a style easily comparable to that of 'Cinematic Orchestra', 'Hidden Orchestra' and early 'Bonobo' productions, it seems a natural progression for Brewer to add a live band to his list of projects. As the Soul Sessions resident selector slowed things down on the turntables and the lights dimmed leaving only candlelight, The 'Frameworks Band' began with some instrumental pieces to ease the audience into the bands first ever live set. A vocalist joined the band a short time after and with that, the band entered full swing playing tracks from Brewer's 'Vanish' EP with Brewer himself playing the hard hitting bongos that stand out in his recordings. After finishing with more of Brewers productions, it was clear from the band's first live performance that there will be many more successful shows to play in the future including Soundwave Festival Croatia in a few weeks. Support in the shape of 'Pieces of a Man' followed 'Frameworks' and his band. Comprised of a DJ, a keyboardist and four singers, they added something different from the previous act with a neo-soul sound that created a livelier atmosphere. The hundred or so who were still in attendance late on Sunday night lapped up the sing and clap backs, creating a feel good atmosphere. The DJ's scratching skills added an element of funk to the performance. No sign of Jazz snobs, only music lovers of different age groups enjoying what this new local band had to offer. After a great debut from 'Pieces of a Man', the 'Soul Sessions' band took over and jammed until the early hours of Monday morning. The 'Soul Sessions' vibe is well matched to Matt and Phreds. All too often external promoters lose a sense of the events identity by settling for venues that don't really go hand in hand with the feel of the night. This is certainly not the case with 'Soul Sessions'. Watch out for the crews events, I expect they have some big plans in mind after a hugely successful start to their project. Best known as being the premier jazz club of Manchester, the venue has widened its musical foothold in recent years and has regularly been playing host to some of the worlds best blues, latin, afro, hiphop reggae and soul artists. With the Manchester Jazz festival a couple of weeks away, Matt and Phreds will definitely be the place to be, with an immense atmosphere and quality music. As a bonus there are plenty of drinks and pizza offers on a daily basis, both of which are great value. If the much hyped first weekend of the month hasn't matched your expectations, head down to 'Soul Sessions' at M+P's on the Sunday evening. At either five or three pounds (Students) as well as the various offers of food and drinks the venue has to offer, an evening of good eating, good drinking and (very) good music awaits.
