Song of the Day || 2.25.15 "Gypsy" by Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's most recent solo album, Artpop, took a little while to grow on me. This song, especially. This song didn't really hit me until today. Sure, it sounds like a lot of her other tunes ("Edge of Glory," "The Queen"), but I love that she keeps the 80s synth pop sound alive. 

She sounds fantastic on this song and the chorus is totally catchy. I also like that the lyrics are different from the others on Artpop — an album that's heavily focused on sex and...sex.

Song of the Day || 1.26.2015 "Bulldozer" by Cold War Kids

I've always thought the opening of this song is kind of eerie. The almost tribal drum sounds gradually build up to the chorus and tone down for the next verse immediately. There's an incredible amount of control with every instrument throughout this song — nothing sounds even slightly off or out of place. Nathan Willett's vocals are totally on-point and his falsetto never strays away from the melody.

The transition into the climax of the song is about 3/4 of the way through and grabs me every time I listen to it. Willett sings slower while the rest of the band builds a foundation around him and continues to build off of that while his voice grows more intense. The last line: "Gnash your teeth, take a bite of the dirt" is my favorite part. When I first listened to Cold War Kids, I wasn't a huge fan of Willett's voice. I was dumb.

Song of the Day || 1.22.2015 "Inside Out" by Spoon

This is a song that I can remember hearing for the first time. Those are the best. They leave an impression.

This is unlike the rest of Spoon's stuff — they've taken a break from their fast-paced alternative style and experimented with more synth and pretty, harp-like sounds. This video is aesthetically confusing, yet soothing with Britt Daniel's softer-sounding vocals playing behind some disturbing, yet somehow comforting images.

Today was my first semi-stressful day of the semester, so I've had this on repeat. It's one of the most relaxing songs I've ever heard — it swells when it needs to and holds back at all the right times. Just wanted to share something that can bring you back down to earth when your head's strayed too far from your body.
