The body is essential to prophecy. The body of the prophet is not simply a vessel that is filled with the prophetic word, or a channel through which prophecy passes. What does god likes matter mean

It’s a quote from C.S. Lewis’s “Mere Christianity”, about the doctrines all Christians share — I think this section specifically was about the Eucharist. Full context:

“This new life [in Christ] is spread not only by purely mental acts like belief, but by bodily acts like baptism and Holy Communion. It is not merely the spreading of an idea; it is more like evolution — a biological or super-biological fact. There is no good trying to be more spiritual than God. God never meant man to be a purely spiritual creature. That is why He uses material things like bread and wine to put the new life into us. We may think this rather crude and unspiritual. God does not: He invented eating. He likes matter. He invented it.”

I love love love this quote for so many reasons, but I think mostly it reminds me that our physical bodies/forms are here for a reason, yknow? They’re not only something to be ashamed of or to cast aside — they’re crucial to the way in which Christianity spreads and is expressed. It can be easy for me to get drawn into a super theological/philosophical understanding of religion but at the end of the day ‘matter’ is not our enemy. God likes eating! God likes matter! He invented them!!!
