Why This Award-Winning Piece of AI Art Can’t Be Copyrighted
Matthew Allen’s AI art won first prize at the Colorado State Fair. But the US government has ruled it can’t be copyrighted because it’s too much “machine” and not enough “human.”
No human no copyright apparently
Dus…
What we have here, using various picrews, is Matt (at different ages). I apologize for the inconsistent hair color, but a lot of these didn’t have the right one. It was either bright blond or dark brown, neither of which are right. I went with blond for a lot of them since it’s closer to his actual hair color, which is more of a light brown/dirty blond.
Anyway, let’s get into it, shall we?
The first Matt is one around the time he found Castalia (which would make him 23). He’s a very cheerful sort (which hasn’t changed), and his hair is a little on the long side. Let’s just say he’s grinning down at Cloud or Castalia.
The next is a chibi-style Matt and Cassie, even though Cassie didn’t meet Matt until she was five because I felt like it and it was cute. No set age on this one, but it doesn’t matter. His hair did get trimmed a bit once he started living in Nibelheim, though.
The next one is one of my favorites. This Matt is one who has come to terms with his feelings for Skye, and is dropping a pretty obvious hint to her as to how he feels. He acted all cool and suave only to turn into a panicking dork the next moment because Skye froze in shock. He’d be about...25 here, I think.
Fourth is Matt and Skye after they got together. Cassie is somewhere inside the house with Cloud so they took a moment for themselves. He’s still in the 25-27 range here (and she would be 22-24). Also, I made his hair brown because I didn’t want him and Skye to have the same hair color.
This Matt is the big 3-0. His hair is now much shorter, and he’s sporting a new pair of specs, but he’s still the same cheerful, outgoing guy. He’s also got a bit of stubble, which he wears well.
Finally, we have current Matt (35). He doesn’t actually have that much gray hair, but he does have some (thanks to Cloud and Cassie), and it is near his temples so I put that there. His hair is a bit longer than his thirty-year-old self, but shorter than it was in his twenties. He is also wearing a shirt Cassie got him and has the expression of a man who done goofed (and knows it).
You’re welcome to follow via Tumblr (just click that little “follow” button in the upper right corner, there you go) or check back from time to time at emmyandoliver.com. I’ll definitely be reblogging a few things from time to time on my personal Tumblr, such as reviews or interesting photos, but I really wanted a dedicated space for E&O so I could share articles, songs, etc. that helped inspire the book. I know as both a reader and author, I love being able to read something and then see what helped create it. If you’re the same way, then this is for you.
“Yes, yes, yes,” you’re probably saying, “that’s all fine and great. But what can I WIN? AND HOW CAN I WIN IT?”
I’m so glad you asked.
So this is what’s up for grabs in this lil’ prize pack:
1 ARC of EMMY & OLIVER
$5 giftcard to Starbucks, chosen solely because of the red VW van and surfboards on it. (You’ll understand the significance once you read the book, I promise.)
BUTTONS!
Every Wednesday in April, I’ll post a quote from EMMY & OLIVER, and you can retweet, reblog, and/or regram it for a chance to win! That means you have four chances to win! The odds are better than Vegas! (Maybe, I don’t know, I’m not much of a gambler.)
I don’t even remember writing this line, but I still like it!
And more importantly, a huge thank you to Matthew Allen for making all of these gorgeous images. He’s also responsible for the “Emmy & Oliver” lettering on the cover, as well as being an amazing surf photorapher. Don’t be surprised if I start reblogging his photos on this site!
THIS WEEK’S CONTEST LINKS!
1. REBLOG THIS POST.
OR
2. REPOST THIS PICTURE. (Don’t forget to tag me so I can see your repost!)
OR
3. RETWEET THIS TWEET.
Some important notes!
You may reblog/repost/etc. as many times as you’d like, but it only counts as one entry. In other words, if you repost the photo 20 times on Instagram, you’ll still only entered once for a chance to win. (You’ll have my eternal respect and affection, though, if that’s any consolation.)
I’ll be randomly picking one winner from Tumblr, Twitter, AND Instagram, not one from each media platform. But since there are four chances to win over the course of April, I feel like everything will balance out.
This week’s contest ends on Thursday 4/30 at 11:59pm Pacific time.
The contest is only open to US residents.
And that’s it! Questions? Comments? Find me over at Twitter or via email. Or just shout out the window. My hearing’s pretty good, I’m sure I’ll hear you.
In the meantime, EMMY & OLIVER can be pre-ordered via your amazing local indie, Amazon, or B&N, if you absolutely must have your own copy. You can also add it on Goodreads, if you feel so inclined.
Best of luck, and thank you so much for all of the support. It means the world to me!
