The Tempest @ The Globe
Another poem by Matthew Sweeney (RIP)
LISDOONVARNA
Lisdoonvarna, of all places, was where he demanded I meet him, to hand over the money. Was he pretending we were going there to each pick up a country lassie at the Matchmaker’s Fair. I asked him how I’d get there. Take a boat, he said. Very funny, I barked, then hung up.
I went down the hill towards the bus station, passing a woman with two poodles, one in a push-chair, the other under her arm. The sun was shining as if it was deluded we were in Spain. I had Charlie Parker playing merrily in my head, as I’d just taken off the CD before I departed.
I’d ransacked under the mattress and amassed five grand which I’d crammed into a football sock. Seemed a lot to me to apologise to him for giving him three donkeys painted in black and white stripes, and claiming they were zebras. I mean, he couldn’t claim his pathetic Kerry zoo was great.
And if the weather in Kerry was as good as it was in Cork the rainstorm wouldn’t have washed the stripes off, or made the donkeys bray. At least, the Gardai weren’t dragged in. He’d paid me two grand for the three. He was making a profit, that was fine, but why did I have to travel to Lisdoonvarna?

If one were to ask Matthew what it’s like being a vampire, he would probably grunt something barely audible in response and go back to working on whatever he’s writing at the moment. Even before he knew how to read and write, Matthew was always more interested in the fictional scenarios happening in his head than in the world around him. It’s not that he doesn’t notice the world - he does, often picking up the tiniest details out of situations and words. He is usually more excited to have a story come together, though. And where does he find the inspiration for his stories? Why, all around him, of course!
This was why he enrolled in the university a year ago - despite his tendency to stay away from people, he loves to observe them, their habits, behaviors, personalities. After all, characters are always based on someone real. And Matthew is very good at observing.
Perhaps, this is why, whenever Matthew writes about the people he knows, his “characters” seem to perform actions much earlier than their real life inspirations do.
But Matthew is sure there is nothing supernatural about it - after all, after all the effort and time Matthew puts into observing the people he bases his characters on, it would be weird if these people behaved in a different way.
It’s totally supernatural. Matthew’s skills for writing people’s future actions are basically his sharp observation skills made sharper still by his vampirism. His ability isn’t foolproof, but he is usually 85-95% correct about how anyone will act in any given situation.
So, Matthew’s personality and ability could be useful for finding out who the killer is, but he might just get really carried away with all the different scenarios of how the crime happened and with all the details around it.
Only CC is his hair (included).
Also, he’s bi, but he doesn’t date much since he prefers to observe people from a distance rather than to interact with them.
Matthew took Sol to a place where she wouldn’t have to hide from humans, a pond where no one ever went to. Sol was always scared to go out in public because she knew people would stare.
“This is perfect.” She smiled.
Matthew laid down on the floor and motioned for her to do next to him. He began to look deep into her eyes, and at that exact moment he felt his fangs begin to itch. He tried to look away, to get rid of those disgusting thoughts, but it just wasn’t working. His hand began to hold tighter on to hers, putting strong pressure on her fragile hands. He hated what he was becoming.
“Ow, my hand! You, you’re hurting me!”
Once he heard those words he snapped out of it. He looked down and saw how tight he was holding on to her left hand. “I- I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to-”
In the distance he could smell blood, but it wasn’t human blood. His eyes began to gleam and Sol was starting to get scared. “What...? What’s going on?”
“Nothing, nothing.” He got up and helped her get up. He held her in his arms and she began to run her fingers on his shoulder.
“I have an idea.” She whispered.
Now, another part of his body was beginning to get excited. Could she mean..?
She broke free from his arms and began to yell, “Let’s play tag! Come and get me!”
Two weeks had passed by since the lock down at the academy, the students still had a week left of break until they were to return. Matthew and Sol’s relationship grew stronger as time passed by. Matthew was waiting for Sol to finish getting ready so he could take her on a surprise date. He couldn’t stop thinking about how she must taste...
Sol came dancing downstairs. “Hey, Matty-o! I’m all set! Are you... alright? What’s with the worried face?”
Matthew shook his head and gave Sol a warm smile. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it. Ready?”
Just as Sol was about to head towards the door, Matthew reached behind the couch and grabbed the flowers he had bought for her earlier in the day.
“Surprise! I hope you like them, they’re purple! Like my hair!”
Sol laughed in excitement. “Wow!!! They’re gorgeous! I’ll put them in my room when we get back!”
Matthew got up and Sol quickly got up along with him. She wrapped her arms around his comforting shoulders and looked him in the eyes. He slowly worked his hands up to her waist.
“Matt, I know you feel the same way, you’re just too scared.”
Matthew was starting to get nervous now. “How.. How did you know?” He gulped.
“It’s so obvious! Your new story... the main character Mateo finds true love with the sun-ray goddess, Sunny! You’re clearly writing about us, Matt!”
It was true, he was unconsciously writing the perfect love story about them, but he failed to realize that the best story was the one he was currently holding.
“Sol...” He pulled her in tighter and gently kissed her cheek. It was at times like these when he especially hated being a vampire. Sol smelled just how she looked, sweet and charming. His eyes began to glow with lust. He wished he wouldn’t have these thoughts, violent thoughts of piercing her beautiful yellow skin with his sharp fangs. He had never drank from someone before, but from what he was told, once you get a taste you won’t be able to stop until they’re all out of blood. He shook his head and tried to steer away from his lustful thoughts.
Sol let out a soft, charming giggle. “See, told ya you’d feel the same way!”
It was now Monday and Ezekiel was ready to tell everyone what he saw the day before. With Hero’s help, everyone gathered in the meeting room.
“Supernaturals. We have gathered today because our colleague Ezekiel has something he’d like to share with us all.”
Ezekiel took in a deep breath and explained everything. Sol was the first to make a comment. “Wasn’t she that Kaitlin girl’s best friend? She passed away at the night of the dance... I was talking to Chip, and he told me what happened.”
“That makes no sense! How could she have gotten those pills, if she lives in the upperclassmen dormitory?” What Matthew said made sense.
Saltee was quick to reject his theory. “They’re BEST FRIENDS. Best friends always share everything, even if they live in two different houses! What doesn’t make sense is how she got there if the cafe was closed!”
Bishop was growing tired of these people dying. “I just hope that none of us meet the end of or lives as quick as they did...”
The underclassmen were now all in class and ready for their first day.
“Hello, everyone! I’m going to be your teacher for a couple of days. My name is Miss Flores. This class is going to help with accepting who we are, as supernaturals. For our first activity, I would like for you to talk to the person across from you and tell them how you feel about your gifts, whether you enjoy them or hate them. If you have any questions feel free to ask!”
Sol was talking to Matthew about how much she enjoyed her gifts, but he didn’t seem too fond of his. “I don’t really care. I mean, sometimes being a vampire helps me with my writing because I don’t get tired that fast... It’s whatever.”
Bishop told Saltee all about his past and all she said to him was, “It’s so awesome! I love being a fairy.”
Reggie was partnered up with Ezekiel, another witch. They both were waiting for their true powers to be given to them, something they had in common. “I don’t like waiting.”
