Sasha perched on a stool at Matthew’s kitchen island and blinked in the early morning sun. He wasn’t sure—this, whatever it was, was so new—they weren’t exactly clear about the protocol. Should he leave? Order breakfast? Take Matthew out?

Matthew hummed loudly, unbothered by the uncertainty Sasha felt. He banged on the coffee maker to get it started, then rummaged through the fridge.

“Can I… help? Make breakfast, maybe?” Sasha asked hesitantly.

Matthew turned, framed by the mostly empty fridge behind him, and smiled sheepishly.

“Unless you want questionable spinach or leftovers, I think we gotta eat at the rink,” Matthew answered. “But we can at least have some coffee and juice before we go.” He lifted up a bottle of orange juice and shook it a little, closing the fridge door with his hip. 

“Oh, I don’t need—” started Sasha, but Matthew was already pouring two tall glasses of juice. He set one down on the counter in front of Sasha, then raised his own in a small toast. 

“Bottoms up,” he said cheerfully, then chugged the whole thing in one go. Sasha stared at the long line of his throat as he swallowed it all down. Matthew grimaced and set the empty glass down with a little more force than necessary, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Fuck I hate orange juice. Tastes so weird with toothpaste.”

Sasha snorted. “If you hate it, why are you drinking it?”

Matthew sidled around the edge of the island and bumped his shoulder against Sasha. 

“Closest thing to morning sunshine I could get in Calgary in the winter. Did you know it’s dark until like 8:30?”

“But you have morning sun now,” said Sasha. He grabbed his own full glass, but didn’t lift it. “Things are different here.”

Matthew slung an arm around his waist and leaned in to kiss him on the cheek. “Yeah, they are,” he said with a smile. “I get sun, and a team I think can win, and you.”

“And me,” answered Sasha, and pulled him in for a real kiss. Maybe he didn’t need to worry so much about what they were; Matthew was all in.

July 25th 2022 - Florida

Matthew took a deep breath before he stepped on stage and took his place next to his new GM, Bill Zito. He was a little nervous, but he was excited too. He almost felt like on his draft day, just that this time he was sure where he’d end up. Definitely not the Oilers. Not the Flames. But the Panthers, the team that had been at the top of his list.

He fiddled with his sunglasses before he remembered to stop. He didn’t want to show nerves. At least he wasn’t the one having to go first. He hid his smile by sucking his lip into his mouth when Bill Zito fumbled the introduction – it seemed he wasn’t the only one struggling with nerves. This was not only a big step for Matthew but for the whole franchise. Bill Zito would either be celebrated for his braveness and foresight or he would be chased out of town for trading away their franchise heroes.
