A new initiative in New York City will replace NYPD officers in two neighborhoods with health mental professionals for some 911 calls. Matt Kudish, executive director of National Alliance on Mental Illness of NYC, however, was more critical of what he said was a lack of "peer involvement" in the pilot program.
From avoiding TV to finding refuge in books, video games and family, people grappling with added stress shared how they’re dealing with trying times.
"We are seeing a lot of calls related to anxiety and stress that people are experiencing today," said Matt Kudish, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of NYC. The organization says the number of callers seeking help has jumped 60% over the last few weeks, and that conversations now last about 15 minutes longer than average.
Sound Mind: A Mental Health Benefit Concert debuts in Brooklyn on May 13 in partnership with NAMI-NYC. With this first-of-its-kind event, founder Chris Bullard intends to create vast social change around mental illness, just as Farm Aid transformed perceptions about food and family farms.
“When you’re living through a traumatic event, there will likely be consequences — physically, emotionally, psychologically, financially,” said Matt Kudish, executive director of NAMI-NYC. “Through the lens of trauma, through the lens of grief, we need to be mindful of the effect this is having on us and the potential longer-term impact.”
