Неуклюжие на суше и грациозные в воде они чутко реагируют на любое изменение чистоты морской экосистемы. Следить за их популяцией и образом жизни — главная задача мониторинга, который с 2010 года постоянно проводит «Газпром нефть». Многолетние наблюдения в районе платформы «Приразломная» в Баренцовом море показывают, что численность этих удивительных животных, занесенных в Красную книгу России, сохраняется.
