Back on my Innkeeper Chronicles obsession and asking for another book in this amazing world
I know Orro’s studio Ghibli incarnation would inevitably be amazing but consider Studio Ghibli-style Helen.
Helen, who at five years old, turned her mount around to face a monster who was the echo of her species’ greatest enemy, big enough to swallow her whole because another child was in danger and she chose to stand between it and them.
Helen, who literally hisses at law enforcement, casually ignores physics to build a bedroom with a built-in-pool, black sheets, and a fuzzy pink blanket, and brazenly and successfully social engineers her way past strict vampire security because she is not going to let her mommy die.
Helen, who has a kill count, who remembers alien customs and shows them respect, who is one of a handful of people who witnessed the miraculous salvation of a condemned alien species who flew into their new world carrying a gift she gave them.
She is full of magic (enough to drag monsters to the surface and sense the corruption moving through the inn), she has compassion and protective instincts, a biological father who passed on his charisma and charm, a mother who passed on knowledge and ferocity, an adoptive family that loves her and is unrivaled in strength and tradition. She’s seen so much and absorbed so much of it, she plays with other kids and dogs and kitties and literally lethal weapons.
Like, if this kiddo doesn’t become Preceptor someday, I dunno what she’s gonna do, but it’s gonna be chaos.
EITHER WAY I would so enjoy a Ghibli style version of this kiddo carrying a freaked out Maine Coon cat 🤭
So, Sweep of Blade is getting closer to it's climax (fingers crossed). And Magic Triumphs is coming out on August 28th. What are the odds that the lasted week of August is gonna be a roller coaster ride through shark infested waters with velociraptors on ski boards for the Ilona Andrews fandom?
That's me, running into said waters..

Maud Demille was a daughter of Innkeepers. She knew that a simple life wasn’t in the cards, but she never anticipated what Fate would throw at her.
Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her daughter, Helen, had been exiled for the sins of her husband to the desolate planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud had spent a year and a half avenging his death. But now all the debts are paid. Rescued by her sister Dina, Maud had swore off all things vampire. Except she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined.
Try as she might, she can’t just walk away from Arland. It doesn’t help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire.
To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is a powerful vampire House, and Maud knows that a woman who turned down the proposal from its most beloved son wouldn’t get a warm reception. But Maud Demille never shied from a fight and House Krahr may soon discover that there is more to this human woman than they ever thought possible.
Sweep of the Blade takes place right after the events of One Fell Sweep and is currently posted on the Innkeeper website
