‘The Mounga/Mount’ - Mount Maunganui, Tauranga

There’s two main stories I know of about the mountains in this area (though there are many more, and they all vary depending on the Iwi they come from), both start with the mountains of the North Island living together in peace. The first I know is that Mt Tongariro, Mt Taranaki, Mt Tauhara and Mt Pūtauaki fought a great battle for the affections of Mt Pihanga, a beautiful mountain with a cloak of green forest. Tongariro was the victor, and the other mountains moved away.

The other story is that Mt Ruapehu was married to Mt Taranaki, but while he was away, she and Mt Tongariro were unfaithful. When Taranaki caught them, he and Tongariro fought, with Taranaki losing the fight. He moved far away. It is said Ruapehu still loves him and sighs occasionally, while Taranaki still looks back to her.

In both stories, Taranaki’s journey created the Wanganui river.

I totes thought biking to the top of Mt. Vic was a realistic goal. It wasn't.
