#MovieoftheDay: The Cosmic Eye (1986) Movies I Want to See: 4/50 Comparatively speaking, The Cosmic Eye is readily available, having been issued on tape TWICE (initially by Disney, no less), and even on an early DVD as part of a set profiling the work of Faith and John Hubley called "Art and Jazz in Animation". But all these editions are long out of print and fetch high prices online - when they can be found at all. And these releases notwithstanding, The Cosmic Eye remains extremely obscure, having apparently had only a very limited theatrical release. It is for the nonce viewable online, but that's it. Which is a shame, given not only its stature as a non-Disney animated feature at a time when such films were rare, but the stature of its makers - not just the Hubleys, who won three Oscars for Animated Short Film over the years, but Dizzy Gillespie (who provides voice work AND music), Maureen Stapleton, Elizabeth Swados, and Benny Carter. And the plot is rather interesting as well: a trio of alien musicians come to Earth and demand that the human race achieve peace, or risk destruction. It incorporates some of the Hubley's previous shorts, including the Oscar-winning "Moonbird", though presumably it contains enough original material to stand on its own. Long ago, in an old, old edition of Videohound's Movie Retriever, I saw a listing for the Hubley short "Hello" and sought to track it down.
