“Alright, man, stop fucking around now. I’ve got shit to do. Uncuff us.” Maverick was serious and on the cusp of anger. Nate was a deer in headlights. The thing is that he wasn’t joking when he nervously admitted that when Maverick jumped out of the way of a biker and sent Nate stumbling, the key tumbled down a drain. Nate watched it happen, his jaw on the pavement and arms outstretched helplessly.
Nate took a step back.
Maverick took a step forward.
“Nate.”
“... Maverick.”
“Uncuff us.”
“I can’t.”
They stared at each other in utter silence. They were twin pillars in the middle of a busy New York sidewalk, pedestrians not even looking up from their phones as they maneuvered around them. “I’m sure they can help us at a fire station,” Nate offered and pulled the vibrating phone of his pocket with his free hand. He bit his lip as he read the message. “Do you mind running an errand with me first though? There’s a really import.....” Nate trailed off as he took stock of the look on Maverick’s face. He slid his phone back into his pocket. “Nevermind. It can wait. Let’s go find a firehouse.”
