Maverick could be seen as the athlete cliché. He takes care of his body, can't go through a week without doing some exercises. Because he has always dreamt big, he is ambitious, determined and stubborn, for better or for worse. He is often his own enemy, too: he is critical, tends to think that what he is doing isn't enough. Luckily, he is kinder to his friends. He is the guy you can call at 1am, the guy who will listen to you and give you some wise advice. The same advice that he will never be able to follow or to apply on his own life, ironically.

At first, there was just a couple of dreamers. The man was a Merrock local, the proud owner of Malibu&Co., a surfing shop. The woman was a coach for the high school swimming team. Before they reached their thirties, they welcomed their first child. A couple of years later, another baby extended the family. That was the perfect portrait: a married couple and two children. Yet, in the year 1996, a third kid arrived. Maverick, named after the main protagonist of that Top Gun movie. Their little surprise, as his mother used to say.

You will be great, my son. How many times did Maverick hear that sentence when he was just a child? He didn’t feel like he was doing anything amazing. Sure, he learned how to swim quite early. Sure, he enjoyed spending time in the ocean or at the pool more than anything. Sure, he was the only one of his siblings who was showing interest in surfing. To Maverick, he was just enjoying the little pleasures that life was giving him. To his parents, he was promising. As he immersed in the surfing world, Maverick started to change his mind and to believe that he could be great, too. A champion. A pro. Slowly, it became his main goal in life. The ambitious teenager entered in his surfing era, ready to take over the world.

Competition after competition, he made his way into a world he knew nothing about. Luckily, he was not alone. His dad had always been his first supporter and as he started to win more and more contests, he found in his mother a new coach. Perhaps it wasn’t ideal, considering how seriously she took her job. Yet they were a good team and by the age of 22, Maverick made it pro. He was no longer a dreamer. Now he was a champion. The promising athlete he was meant to be. That’s when he decided to move, leaving Merrock and settling in Malibu, embracing his new career and all the opportunities he could get.

Life on the West Coast could have been pretty if his mother hadn’t followed him. Because she was both his very first coach and some kind of agent, she looked for the best opportunities for her son, tried to lead him on the best path. Without even noticing it, she started to put a lot of pressure on Maverick’s shoulders. At first, he wasn’t aware. His mother just wanted the best for him. She didn’t mean any harm. Yet, a part of him tried to get away from it, willing to do all the stupid things his friends were suggesting just to feel like himself again, just to feel free for a couple of hours. What a fucking mistake. That night, hitting the road on that old scooter and recording their ride seemed funny. The collision wasn’t. Before he even realized what happened, Maverick got sent to the hospital, his left thigh severely injured. The most pessimist part of him thought that he would never be able to walk again without the help of a crutch. The physical therapy was tough, left him hopeless about his future in the professional surfing world. He knew it was over the minute he met the doctor’s gaze. He may be able to recover from the accident but he will never be strong enough to reach the top the way he had before.

As he was still mourning his career, Maverick came back home in Merrock. He was almost 26, had no job anymore, couldn’t surf as much as he wanted to, had no idea on what to do with his life. The year 2022 was the year of the unknown. Little by little, he had to find his footing. As he was getting better, he started to help his father at the shop, surfing at the end of the day when his leg wasn’t too sore. Slowly he moved on from his very first goal. At the beginning of 2023, another role was given to him when his parents decided to leave Merrock and to let him take over the surfing shop.
