HOP Writing Prompt ~ Dear Max
Writing Prompt: Write a letter from one of your characters to another.
There’s no easy way to write this letter to you. There’s never going to be an easy way to find the right amount of words to describe how much I have wronged you and let you down - but it’s about time that I try to explain everything to you.
I’ve always struggled with self doubt and feeling that I was never good enough for anything. My siblings were always such high achievers and I was somehow different, born of the same blood and yet never destined for greatness. My parents were never supportive - they always chose to help my siblings over me. I was always tossed to the side; forgotten.
I needed to do something drastic to show them that I was just as much in need of their love and attention as my siblings. And so, I started to date your mother - Morgan Fyres - who had previously dated my father when they were teenagers.
I know, the thought of this may make you sick to the stomach - but I was willing to go to any level to show them how desperate I was. Your mother was enticing, compelling and hard to resist. She swept into my life like a tropical storm, and I was never prepared for the amount of damage she would leave in her wake.
When your mother passed away, I was numbed to my very core. I didn’t know how to breathe, how to think, how to live without her. This is the danger of a love so toxic as ours was - we were so bonded through our mutual anger and hatred that we were tearing ourselves apart from the inside. Our relationship was not healthy and I know that it affected the way that we raised you. I will never, ever forgive myself for being so focused on living for myself, whilst I should have been doing all that I could to protect you.
I’ve watched you from as far away as possible and I am so proud of how much you have grown into an independent, caring and selfless young man. My parents have done such a good job of raising you, unlike they did with me. I will never begrudge them of that, they have been better parental figures in your life than I would ever be capable of being.
Part of me wants to beg you for forgiveness for how absent I have been in your life. An apology for all of the missed school plays, the missed teacher-parent meetings, the missed birthdays. However, I’m terrified that you would be the bigger person and accept my apologies when I am very aware that I do not deserve your kindness.
I have some tough decisions to make soon, Max. They will shape our relationship for the rest of our lives, and I don’t have a clue on what I am supposed to do,
I know that I will make the decision that is right by us both, Max, but I need you to know just a few things:
I am so proud of you. I love you. I thank you for every precious memory I have to treasure for a life time.
