The Year my Fiance was Turned into a Cat on Halloween
*Y/N POV**
You know how most normal couples go out to Halloween parties or stay in to watch scary movies on Halloween? Well, this Halloween my fiancé Max and I stayed in all right…..Because he was TURNED INTO A FRICKEN CAT! I know, you must think I’m crazy, but it’s true. It all started when I was driving home from a business trip to Dallas…
*Ring Ring**
“Hey babe, what’s up?” I said cheerfully, setting the phone to speaker so I could drive with two hands.
“Ronnie and the boys are already upstairs cleaning out the guest bedroom. When are you gonna get home?
“Oh, I’ll be back at my apartment in about forty-five minutes…And I imagine it’ll take me at least an hour to pack all my crap and get over to your place.” I paused. “I feel like pizza, so I’ll probably get some on the way to your place, so don’t eat lunch ok?”
“Okay, babe. I’ll talk to you later-it sounds like the boys have found something they need to show me.”
“Okay, have fun. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
Max hung up, and then I turned my music back up.
An hour and ten minutes later I was packing my stuff into boxes when Jacky called me.
“Hello?”
“Um. Y/N? We have a bit of a situation on our hands….”
“What is it?”
“Max has been turned into a cat,” he muttered.
“Um. Pardon me?”
“Look, I can show you better than I can tell you,” he said louder. “Could you just skip packing all your stuff and make do with bringing just the pizza, a hairbrush and a toothbrush? I’m sure Max won’t mind you borrowing some of his stuff for the next couple days.”
“Um…..Okay? I’ll be there in ten.” Ten minutes later, Jacky met me outside on the porch to Max’s and my house.
“This is going to be a bit of a shock…But before you get mad, let me explain okay?”
“Okay, now you’re scaring me. What the hell did you guys do, steal my underwear and bras to hang them up on the electrical lines?”
I expected him to chuckle, but he just gave a slight smile. “No.” He opened the door with a flourish, and out came a small cat that had exactly the same hair and eye color as Max. ”We turned Max into a cat.”
“You what?!”
Max rubbed up against my leg. “We turned your fiancé into a cat.”
I kneeled down in front of the brown cat in front of me, and the cat leaped into my lap to lick me on the cheek. “Meow!”
“Well, actually Derek turned Max into a cat.”
I think that was the point when I fainted. Fortunately, Jacky was quick enough to catch me before I hit my head on the brick stairs of the porch.
Sometime later I heard Max anxiously meowing and felt him licking my cheek.
“Mmmm….Maxx..stop that tickles!”
“Mew!”
Timidly, I sat up on the couch and Max curled up into a ball on my lap purring while I petted him.
Jacky and the others came in then. “What happened?”
“Well, we were all finishing up the guest bedroom when Jacky found an old leather-bound book on the top shelf of the closet….He read a paragraph from the book out loud, and then poof, Max was a cat.” “Just like that…?”
“Just like that.”
I thought for a moment. “Let me see the book. Maybe there’s some kind of counter-spell.”
A few minutes later we discovered to my great dismay that there were no cures, but it did say that the spell was temporary.
After a while, the boys left to spend Halloween night with their families….And that’s when things started to get even more interesting.
I was making a bowl of popcorn in the kitchen when suddenly a woman who looked about my age walking anxiously through the house searching for something. As soon as she saw max in my arms though she groaned to herself and rushed forward.
I scrambled on top of the kitchen counter and slid off on the other side, separating myself from this intruder. “Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my house?!”
She stopped, looking very grave and guilty. “I’m so sorry, this is really rude…Please excuse the intrusion. My name is Daniella and I am what you humans would call a witch….I accidentally transported my spell book back here last week, and this is the first chance I’ve gotten to come retrieve it…I’m so sorry I didn’t come sooner. Don’t worry though, it looks like I’ve come just in time to save him.”
I was really scared, but I managed to ask “what the hell are you talking about?”
This crazy lady was beginning to look impatient as she held out her arms across the countertop. “Look, human, your little friend may look like an ordinary cat right now but if I don’t act quickly he may not be able to change back properly-“
“But the book said-“
I cut myself off when I saw the look in her violet eyes when they flashed at me.
“Do not interrupt!” She said sternly. “That book was meant for intermediate-level spell casters! In other words, it was written for people who already know the basics of magic, like proper intonation and safety precautions and things! But I can tell just from looking at that human in your arms that whoever put that spell on him didn’t even think anything would happen. That’s a recipe for disaster for any spell! Now hand him over, you have no idea of the danger we are all in!”
“Prove it then! What does the book look like?”
“The book is called ‘Intermediate-Level Incantations and Curses’ and it’s a leather-bound volume with yellow pages.”
She was right, so I reluctantly handed Max over. “Good girl. Now go watch a movie or something,” She waved dismissively. “Saving this poor human being will require doing things you humans aren’t allowed to see.”
“No-“
Something in her expression warned me that it wasn’t a good idea to argue, so reluctantly I went to the next room after I made her promise to explain everything afterward.
I must’ve fallen asleep during the movie though, because next thing I knew Max was shaking me awake.
“Max?” I asked groggily, squinting at him through the darkness (it took a while for me to wake up.) “Max! You’re back to normal!” I cheered, overjoyed and flung myself into his open arms.
“Yeah. But Danzella must’ve slipped away while we were sleping because she isn’t anywhere in the house.
I was mad at first, but then we noticed a note taped to the coffee table. I snatched it up and read, “’Dear Person Who was Turned into A Cat and His Friend, I’m sorry I reneged on my promise but unfortunately there’s been an emergency. Don’t count on me being able to come back though-I wasn’t kidding when I said I came as soon as I could. By the way, you mustn’t ever tell anyone I was here. That is of extreme importance, so act like your lives depend on it. Sincerely, Danzella.’ Well at least she cared enough to leave a note,” I sighed.
After discussing it for a few minutes, we decided to obey Danella’s request to not tell anyone, so we burned the note she left. Right after that, my phone rang.
“Hey Ryan.”
“Hey Y/N, how’s Max doing?”
“He’s changed back already, isn’t it great? We got rid of the book though, so this won’t happen again.”
“Good idea.” There was a pause for a second, then he said rather hastily, “Hey I gotta go, so I’ll talk to you tomorrow okay?’
“Okay. Night.” I hung up.
“You know Y/N…We never did get to say hello properly when you came home today,” Max said, grinning.
I grinned back at him, thinking I definitely would remember this Halloween for the rest of my life.
