For the next instalment in our podcast series, we hand over the decks to Maxi Mill. You might know him for his excellent releases on Voyage Direct or Rush Hour, but Maxim is also a very talented dj. Just like his productions, his sets are filled with futuristic house and techno beats that have a very spacious, warm and analogue sound. But this podcast shows Maxim’s love for the music he grew up with and has been collecting ever since. A great selection of disco, funk and boogie that’s a joy to listen to.

In his early days as a deejay, Maxim was mostly playing hip-hop: “I used to come to Fat Beats, Amsterdam’s best record shop for hip-hop and sorts. I was only 13 when I listened to my first records there.” Being around so much music at such a young age, Maxim slowly built himself a nice collection of records of all kinds of genres.

Next to collecting a lot of music, Maxim was also making it, starting out with mostly hip-hop beats. In all his current productions you can hear he still uses the MPC that he got to learn back then. “I used to make hip-hop beats on my MPC. But before I would be able to properly finish a track, I would need a rapper or vocalist to drop some lines. But I just wanted to make music, so I started to build tracks that I could finish without needing someone else. That’s how I got to make my first house tracks.”
 This podcast contains a lot records that are in Maxim’s collection for quite a while now. 
“I wanted to do something really different then the dj sets I play at the club. It’s more like a mixtape. I selected a few great boogie records, some funky disco and stuff that I had laying around but haven’t really been able to play out”, Maxim says. If you listen closely, you can hear the analogue sound that ties the whole tape together. “I took the whole podcast and let it play through my Roland Space Echo. In some parts of the mixtape you can hear it come up, but overall it just has a wonderful effect on the whole sound. I really like that.”
