I wonder if Maximillian has any trauma from his time as a soldier … It could explain his relationship with Valentine, fixating on someone who might make him feel whole, innocent, normal again after having killed so many people who truly didn’t even deserve it… it would also explain his description of himself as stoic despite his actions speaking to a great instability . He had to learn to be okay with it while he served, and now he cannot be normal . Valentine is his last chance, she’s his only reason to live at this point . (I also like the idea of her having somewhat of a soldier fetish and liking the idea of violence and brutality at least a little . She knows it’s amoral and that it should be repulsive but she’s attracted to the power and catharsis it implies . I think this is another thing which would put him at odds as he expects her to be saint like and prove him worthy of normalcy where she expects him to be a soldier that should cherish her enough to fight and kill in her name.)
