Public School’s Head of the Class
Bold, elegant, contemporary streetwear design is what comes to mind when experiencing a garment by Public School, the brain child of designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow. Their monochromatic hip-hop, high end fashion label instantly became more visible during the recent SS/15 shows. Take adding a woman’s line for example, and launching a diffusion label, and capsule collection for J. Crew, this was a major leap forward and a direct result of winning the CFDA’s Vogue Fashion Fund award for menswear.
All designers aim to find the perfect balance between a signature look and challenging themselves, and Osborne and Chow, have mastered a new urban uniform described as “street tailoring,” The duo also added color and print to their new Spring/Summer 2015 collection by adding pops of electric blue, geometric patterns and a print which resembled a painterly abstract. Silk, mesh, and knit fabrics were layered in a clean, precise structured way—but not like typical activewear. The mens offering included many instantly desirable, basics, like sharply cut tees, long shorts, and luxe bombers.
Public School's womenswear appears to be a direct extension of the menswear, at least in terms of its foundation. The shared silhouettes and fabrication across both lines were apparent, but very well executed. In terms of prints, they collaborated with calligraphist and contemporary artist Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic, a personal friend of the duo. – who also recently did all the art direction for the CFDA awards.
With this SS15 collection Public School not only strengthened it’s brand DNA, but also added enough fresh new ideas to keep hardcore fans happy while attracting a new customer base. It’s a fine balance but one that this brand seem comfortable with. "It's about finding order out of chaos, it's a reflection of the way life is, it's about the need to make sense of the chaos to find the truth that matters to you," Chow stated backstage after the show. For us, chaos has never looked so sophisticated.
