so i’m about to post a ranty post about fandom morals but before i do that i have a truth i want to say about fandom

we don’t have to be a cohesive community

i feel like so much of the friction between pro and anti shippers comes from some idea that there is a one-size-fits-all model for fandom?  and really... there isn’t.  some people (antis) NEED to cut out every problematic element to get any enjoyment from it.  some people (mostly pros as far as i can tell) would really rather accept grey areas like aged-up characters so that they can cover their own needs.  some people cope [insert meme] by recounting their trauma in a fictional world, and some people cope by avoiding their trauma at all costs.  

there is a REASON that ao3 has a rating system.  there’s a REASON it has a tagging system.  it’s so that you can curate your own experience according to your own needs.  you’ll find sooooo much content for the stuff you look for if you know how to do it right.  there will always be a community for what you like.  there will always be people who ship X or don’t ship X.  people have different tastes, and all you have to do is find the people who do it like you.

but, on the flipside, you also have to accept that there are people out there who can read or produce things completely antithetical to your own taste.  there are probably people out here creating what you would consider the most Fucked Up Shit you’ve ever seen.  a lot of these people can still make accurate moral decisions in their everyday interactions.  like... i consider myself a queer advocate, at least online.  i basically preach solidarity within the queer community, and i try to work against exclusionism.  that seems morally sound, right?  well, i also write body horror and torture fics on ao3.  i hurt characters i relate to.  i’m involved in kink communities.  wow, who knew, right?

you don’t have to like what i like.  you don’t have to look at it, you don’t have to hate-read it to judge how moral it is.  the fiction i write isn’t my reality.  i don’t mean that there’s no interaction between the two whatsoever--what i MEAN is that i can separate my life and my identity from fandom content.  some people can’t do that--the content they create is a direct mirror of their ideals.  some people have healthy coping mechanisms and some don’t.  what is healthy for one person may be deadly for someone else.  some people just don’t think that deeply about what they’re reading.

the sooner everyone understands that we all relate to fandom differently, that there are different levels of emotional/personal/moral investment in fandom, the healthier it will be to be IN fandom.
