topic of the night for my brain is how i see/headcanon erlina and brugaves as autistic. sea of stars definitely has a neurodivergence allegory in malkomud and his conflict, and as an autistic person i found it very sweet. but Then, as i was treated to a flashback in autumn hills and given context for erlina and brugaves’ actions…i felt another moment of “oh. I get that.”
in the case of brugaves, i see it in a similar way of “this is what happens when the system is built without people like us” but without that solution at the end. to be born without the deep innate connection to magic that all your peers hold—that could totally be a metaphor!! the way he struggled with the path set for him could be chocked up to the failure in the solstice warrior tradition of “what happens when you have no choice?”, but i resonated with the specific way moraine told him he was too slow and to try harder despite not being equipped the same way his peers were.
erlina is the other end to me in that specific context, having to restrain her skill/power/connection to solstice magic to match those around her. with the way that even aephorul acknowledges her potential, and even her design having hints to a higher level (in the artbook, there’s description of ‘something more regal’, insinuating a degree of power). the component that sticks out to me the most, however, is the more literal/relatable social component. i can separate it into her strong will to fight for what *she* believes is correct and her general disposition. again, the former can be attributed to the unique circumstances that serve as a huge burden…but i’m adding it to the board. speaking in more general terms, erlina’s current/adult talking sprites are all either neutral or angry at first glance. her happy/warm sprite has no smile, and can only be told by the way her eyes change from staring up in neutral to filling the entirety of the height of her eyes. (i have a post showing this somewhere…). the only time she smiles in the game is when she’s a child, around the one person she’s been able to grow close with. it could be a personality thing or a product of the environment thing, but i like the idea. she DOES smile as an adult briefly in the introductory animation, but in the flashback we know that she said to “just pretend” for young valere and zale. in sort of headcanon territory i can’t remember, i feel like she’d also be much more blunt than her peers.
