I was so happy to see your most recent post Dangerous Addiction. It was such a good read. I wanted to ask if you could write a Maya x Carina x Reader story. Where station 19 responds to a pileup on the highway and Reader is in the middle of it. Maybe Maya has to call Carina at the scene to help refocus herself for the job she has to do. Carina meets them in the ER. I always love the way you write drama and angst. If you’re not feeling this, please ignore. Thank you!
Pileups
Maya x Carina x reader
TW: panic attacks, death (temporary), talking of death, injuries.
The day had started well, indeed. You had snuggled into Carina's arms while you were still in bed and then the Italian had given you one of the best morning orgasms of your life before the alarm clock rang for the second and third time, the moment when you had decided to get out of bed with the unspoken promise to continue what you had started that evening.
Maya was on duty, until nine o'clock if all went smoothly, so you had limited yourself to a simple good morning message and then, after greeting Carina with a kiss, you had taken the car keys and started driving to the Police station. Then, you had glanced briefly in the rearview mirror, checking whether or not you had taken your Detective badge.
You hadn't noticed right away...your foot had taken a few seconds too long to slam on the brakes, and in an instant, you'd been crushed between two cars; you'd heard a roar, a sharp pain, airbags deploying, and then...just darkness.

Maya Bishop had almost finished her shift; it was 8:55 a.m. and she couldn't wait to get home and hole up in the blankets. And then, the alarm at Station 19 had started sounding and her dream of getting home on time had vanished into thin air.
"We have a pileup on the highway, at least six injured. A truck cut off six cars and there was a pileup and chain reaction."
Vic reports to the blonde and The lieutenant nods, quickly slipping into her coveralls, as she had been taught in training, and entering the fire truck.
Maya bites her lower lip, feeling that something is wrong and not understanding what it is. Her stomach tightens as the truck approaches the crash site. The police have already diverted traffic elsewhere when the blond lieutenant sets foot on Highway 71.
Her gaze lingers on the road and the sign pointing to the police station a few miles away, and that clench in her stomach intensifies. Anxiously, her gaze darts over the cars, searching and praying at the same time that your first black car of 2018 is not among them but his prayers are useless.
"Andy...Andy that's y/n's car, that's y/n's car!"
Maya begins to run, ignoring the screams of her captain and best friend as her feet dart across the asphalt. "Maya, Maya wait! Lieutenant Bishop!"
Maya's breath is labored as she finally gets to the passenger door, leans out, prays not to see your body but once again, her prayers are not heard. "Y/N! Love, love open your eyes, love open your eyes!"
Her breathing quickens, her chest rises and falls rapidly; she is on the verge of a panic attack but cannot afford it now.
She opens the door, her fingers frantically searching for your pulse, pushing on your carotid artery as her eyes scan your body for any injuries.
"Maya, leave it to us. Leave it to us, call Carina, take care of the other wounded. We'll take care of her."
Andy touches her back and caresses her, tries to pull her away but can't.
"Maya--" "No! No, she--she has to wake up, I have to be with her, she--love, wake up. Come on..."
The steady nerves that characterized the lieutenant seem to disappear, Maya cannot concentrate, her gaze is fixed on you and all she can do is think about the fact that you are not waking up, that your pulse is irregular, that the cut on your forehead is bleeding profusely, and -- "Maya! Maya, we need to take her to the hospital and you need to call Carina. Maya, can you hear me?"
Andy shakes her by the shoulders. She hasn't even noticed that the others have dragged her out of the car and are tending to you and the other injured. She watches Vic extract you from the car and Travis lay you down on the stretcher before checking your parameters.
"Probable head injury, possible lung collapse, weak pulse and falling blood pressure. We need to get her to Grey's Sloan now."
"Bishop!" Andy shakes the blonde hard, so hard that she finally manages to shake her out of her shock. "Go with her to the hospital, we'll take it from here. Maya, call Carina. Now."
Andy pushes the phone to her chest and has her sit inside the ambulance with Vic taking care of you. With one hand he squeezes yours while with the other, he shakily dials his wife's number.
"Bella, did you get home? I left your breakfast on the kitchen counter, there's the pistachio croissant you love so much. I heard there was a pileup on the highway involving multiple cars, they're bringing the injured here now, so far there are no casualties from what I've been told. You-"
"Car...Carina" Maya interrupts her, her voice trembling as she tells one of the loves of her life what she never wanted to say, "it's highway 71, I've just been to the accident scene. Y/n was driving one of the six cars that were involved. W-we're in the ambulance right now, she hasn't regained consciousness yet, she-" the firefighter's voice cracks, tears line her cheeks as she watches your parameters on the monitor. Vic moves frantically around your body lying on the stretcher, talking but Maya can't really take in what her colleague is saying. "May...Maya, are you okay?"
"Head trauma, possible puncture of a lung due to crushing. Her blood pressure is dropping and-" the blonde's breath is little more than a gasp and is so worrisome that Vic turns to look at her. "Amore, love you need to breathe okay? She needs you right now, soon you will get here and I will come to you but until then you have to breathe May. Do you understand, love?"
Carina is terrified, you can hear it in her tone of voice but Maya is too distracted by her ongoing panic attack to realize it. "Y-yes, I-it's d-difficult Car, she's so-"
A sob shakes her chest. Her hand grips yours too tightly. Carina says something but the words are muffled, distant.
The ambulance speeds across the tarmac but not fast enough. Your heart slows again. A moment later, the monitor beeps continuously.
Flatline.

"Maya,...Bella."
Carina runs to you as you are dragged inside the emergency room, lying on the gurney. Teddy Altman and Amelia Shepard are at her side as they check your vitals and have Vic and Travis explain what happened. "Her heart stopped Car, she has a collapsed lung and-and-and-" "May...Maya's breathing. It's okay. It's okay, she'll be okay love. I promise you, she'll be fine."
The blonde grits her teeth, nods, but tears continue to roll down her cheeks.
Carina holds her wife in her arms and hopes, prays that she can keep that promise. The Italian looks at the neurosurgeon, hoping to catch a glimpse of some trace of hope in Amelia, but what she sees sinks her heart further.
"Maya, Carina, we're taking her to the operating room. I will send Schmitt to alert you on how the surgery is going." "Amelia, I want to watch, I-" "Carina, you know it's against protocol and I don't think it's a good idea." Teddy speaks firmly, letting the stethoscope slide back to his neck.
Carina is about to retort but Maya gasps in her arms and the Italian pulls her close. The fireman is shaking and Carina cannot even imagine what is going through the blonde's head; her heart had stopped when she had received Maya's call and imagining you in that car had been enough to send her into a panic attack that she had had to suppress just to help Maya cope and get you to Grey's Sloan.

The steady beeping of the heart rate monitor brings you back to reality. Your head throbs and you groan softly.
Without meaning to, you wake both your wives. Carina has her head resting on your lap, her back curved in a position that must be anything but pleasant as Maya squeezes your hand tightly, watching you and unwilling to take her eyes off you for fear of seeing yours closed again.
Your head throbbing painfully, you raise your hand to graze the bandage around your head but thin, cold fingers won't let you.
"Bella, don't touch it, you have a pretty bad cut on your forehead and you had to have five stitches." "It won't leave a scar, will it?" Carina smiles, shaking her head, "no Bella, nothing will be left."
In the corner of your eyes you notice Maya avoiding your gaze and her white knuckles, given the strength with which she is clutching the fall barrier of your hospital bed. "Maya-" "I was scared, y/n. I've never been so scared in all my life, I-damn it, I thought you were dead, in fact, you died, you died for forty interminable seconds and had a collapsed a lung and-"
Maya suddenly breaks off, her voice breaking in her throat as a choked sob shakes her shoulders. Carina holds out a hand to her, but the blonde does not move. She just stands there, motionless, her glossy eyes scrutinizing you as if she is afraid you might disappear at any moment. "Maya, love, I'm fine, I'm fine, look at me...I'm here."
You ignore the pain and the protesting cry of your Italian wife and reach out toward the blonde. Your foreheads touch and you bring your hand to her cheek, stroking her cheekbones with your thumb. At your gesture, the breath she was holding promptly turns into a sob and another as her arms wrap around you tightly, trying, however, not to cause you pain.
Her breath is uneven against your neck, warm and trembling, as her fingers tighten in the fabric of your hospital gown. She holds you close as if her life depended on it.
Carina joins the embrace; her face hides in your hair for a few moments, the fear of not smelling you again still grips her stomach but the physical contact helps her to calm down a little and release the tension she has built up so far.
"It's okay Car, you did good, you were strong for all of us. I'm proud of you, honey."
You kiss her temple and squeeze both of them a little tighter, ignoring the dull ache in your chest as you settle more comfortably on the crib - not that you can be comfortable, three of you, on one of those infernal beds.
Carina exhales noisily, breaking away from your neck to look briefly into your eyes.
"You gave us quite a scare Bella"
"I don't think I'm going to let you drive a car for quite a while"
"I don't know if I want to drive it, May, take it easy and I'm sorry but it wasn't my intention to end up in the middle of a pileup."
You notice their looks and regret your choice of words a little.
"Too soon?"
"Definitely yes, idiot."
You laugh softly, barely wincing as one feels a twinge in her head. "You need to rest y/n, doctor's orders."
Carina leans toward you again, leaving a kiss on your lips before getting out of bed.
"I'm going to call Amelia and tell her you're awake, do you want some coffee or go to the bathroom maybe? We've been here for a few hours and-"
You are well aware that that tempting request is not addressed to you but you know, hope springs eternal.
"Yes my love, thank you."
Carina gives you a dirty look and then, looks at your wife waiting for an answer. Maya, however, seems to be unwilling to leave you alone, not even for a moment. You know your wife well enough to say that she is thinking about everything that could go wrong if she walked out that door, even if only for five very brief minutes.
"Maya, go with Car. I'm fine love, I swear. If I start feeling tired, I promise to hit the red button…you know I love doing that."
You smile, and your smile, along with your humor, melts the blonde. The firefighter gets up, gives you a quick kiss, and walks toward the door, hand in hand with Carina. "Take care..."
"Yes yes, I will be good. Scout's honor!"
And with a roll of her eyes, they both walk out the door of the room with smiles on their faces.
You watch them leave, exchanging jokes under their breath, and let go a little sigh. They drive you crazy sometimes but, after all, you give them a good dose of scares too.
Thank you for reading! Does it suck? Yes. Did I publish it anyway? Yes. Do I have other finished fanfiction that I don't know when I will publish? Yes. Anyway, this is my kofi link and if you have requests, send them in folks! Comment and and reblog, have a great day!
Could I please have an imagine where the reader hooks up with Maya Bishop one night. The next morning she starts her new job at station 19 and realizes Maya is her captain. Maya tells her nothing can happen between them again, but the intense chemistry between them is apparent. So after a few months Maya realizes she wants to be with her. They get together and around 6 months later the reader is hurt on the job and has to have surgery. The whole team is worried but Maya is extremely freaked out that she may never get to tell the reader she loves her. Andy (the only person who knows about the relationship) tries to calm her down but Maya ends up revealing the relationship to the others. Then later on both Maya and the reader admit that they are in love with each other. Fluffy and angsty please?

Maya was never one to make the best choices. But then again, despite her messy decisions, she managed to snag the position of captain of Station 19, so she guessed they couldn’t be all bad. At least, that’s how she justified her actions. Right now, she was making a particularly bad decision, one that she didn’t even know at the time how bad it actually was.
The thing is, Maya couldn’t help it. She said that to herself a couple times in the past, especially on nights like these. Where she's had a couple of drinks and was already looking to make a bad choice. Tonight though, she was feeling particularly reckless and wanted to bump into someone who was looking to make the same bad decisions with her. And that’s where you came in.
Only, you weren’t quite what she was looking for. Maya avoided types like you, she could see from the second you walked into the bar that you weren’t the messy type. The smile you gave the bartender as you anxiously ordered your drink–a fruity, frilly drink that Maya would never get herself—told her all she needed to know about you. She should’ve just turned her attention elsewhere the minute she sized you up and moved on to find her partner in crime, but for some reason she didn’t. You clearly did not seem like the one night stand type. In fact, it would be a miracle to get you to agree to just about anything at all from the looks of you. Maya just did not clock you to be the type of girl for her to pick up at a sleazy bar. But maybe that’s what made her so intrigued.
She just wanted to spend the night with someone, let loose, take control of another person in a way that would get out her frustrations without any consequences at all. Maya had been lucky here and there picking up people who wanted to give up their control to her, if only for just one night, and she wasn’t about to let that lucky streak die. Usually it was pretty easy, a flash of her smile, a flex of her muscle and people would swoon. Once the night was over she would leave and that was that. Maya told herself that’s exactly what she needed to keep her cool as captain, even if it wasn’t the most healthy. So she really should’ve been looking for the type she always goes for to get exactly what she was seeking. But as you sat at the corner of the bar, sipping on your fancy drink, Maya couldn’t take her eyes off you.
You checked off one of her boxes at least, Maya thought. It definitely seemed like you were new in town. Maya never picked up regulars of the bar, too terrified that these one night stands would get even messier. The times that happened she had to switch bars and she really liked this one.
Maya kept debating with herself, going back and forth on whether she really should pursue a night with you. She could already see the work she would have to put in to get you to go home with her tonight and she had a feeling a girl like you wouldn’t be the most pleased that she would just ghost you the next day. But then there were other women looking your way and Maya realized she wasn’t the only one contemplating taking you home tonight. When she watched one particularly confident woman start to inch closer to your corner of the bar, that was all it took for Maya’s mind to finally be made up for good. She loved competition and she loved coming up the victor, she had to have you.
“First time?”
The voice made you jump. You were so focused on your drink that you didn’t realize a particularly attractive blonde had slid up next to you. “I’m sorry?” Your head snapped up so you could finally acknowledge the person right next to you.
She gave you a toothy grin and leaned back against the wall of the back of the bar. “Here, I mean.”
“Oh!” You were so glad the bar was dark, because you were already blushing profusely and this woman had only said two sentences to you. “Yeah, I heard about this place from some folks and decided maybe it was worth a try.”
“And those folks didn’t want to join you?” Wasn’t Maya’s smoothest way of asking if you were alone, but she was still trying to figure you out. Her best guess is that you’re totally new to Seattle and heard about this gay bar from a few excited tourists. If Maya was lucky maybe you really were a tourist as well and in her experience, people just visiting tend to be the people who are looking for the same thing she is.
“No,” you chuckled nervously. “I’m here by myself.”
“Care for company?” Maya gave you the most dazzling smile she could conjure and she could tell it worked. You hesitated for a moment, looking her up and down before you gave her a shy smile and nodded.
Usually, you see right through these types of people. The ones who only want one thing from you, but there was something about this woman that drew you in. She was charming and smooth. You had clocked a few of the other women who had been eying you from across the bar, but you completely missed the way she had stealthed her way over into your space. You weren’t one to even be picked up at bars, usually it tended to give you the ick, but you were new in town and it didn’t hurt to have some friendly conversation.
When she introduced herself she flashed that bright smile again. And again, there was just something about it that made your heart jump. You gave her your name and was pleasantly surprised when conversation came easily. At some point you two moved to the bar counter so you could sit and after a couple of drinks for the both of you, you realized her bar chair was growing closer and closer to yours. And then after a couple more drinks you suddenly became aware of the warm hand resting on your thigh. But to your surprise, instead of pulling back, your hand just rested under the counter on top of her own.
You really weren’t this type of girl, you weren’t. You didn’t like the idea of getting picked up at bars, you didn’t think this would be the story you tell your friends–even if you didn’t have any here yet–about how you had a “meet cute” but here you were. And honestly, her presence was quite refreshing. She was making you laugh and smile, something that you weren’t doing too often the past few days.
This whole move had been so stressful, it was your first time away from your family and it was to follow a job halfway across the country. The anxiety of it all was really getting to you tonight as you neared the start date to this new job. That’s how you found yourself here, you thought maybe grabbing a drink, making connections, or at the very least seeing part of the community would take your mind off things. You also forgot how you kind of hated bars. But then Maya was making it bearable– Better than that, she was making it fun. The two of you talked about random things, all the while she was quite charming. You knew she was also actively hitting on you, you weren’t that oblivious, but the way she was doing it just kept drawing you in.
She asked you about your likes and dislikes and seemed incredibly interested in you as a person, that’s what made this feel a little different than a casual bar pick up. You did an excellent job at avoiding talking about why you moved here other than “you needed a change of scenery.” If you started talking about your job it would lead into talking about your parents and the decisions you made to start at a random fire station thousands of miles away. That was going to kill this easy going vibe you had with Maya right now. And whether it was her or the alcohol, you just wanted to keep experiencing more of the feelings she was bringing out in you.
For her part, Maya was trying her best to be the most enchanting she could be and she knew it was working. She could feel the eyes of the other woman who had eyed you in your cute little cropped top and your tight black jeans, now giving her the death glare. Could she blame them though? You looked incredibly attractive and also incredibly too innocent for your own good. It’s why she had to have you and it’s probably why everyone else noticed you too.
As the hours ticked by, Maya knew it was now or never. She would’ve honestly liked to take you home a while ago, but she knew it wasn’t that easy. If she were being honest with herself, she was also enjoying the conversation and surprised by how much she loved seeing you get flustered or excited about a topic. But still, getting charmed wasn’t why Maya was here, that was her role tonight, not yours. She may be intrigued by you, but that’s all it was surely. Maya wasn’t in the market for a girlfriend, just a good time and she was determined to have that good time with you. She just needed to get you home, have some fun with you, and get this intrigue out of her system.
Both of you were a little surprised by how readily you agreed to let Maya take you home. You had never said yes to something like this ever. Maya had her doubts on whether or not her charm really was working, but when your hand slid into hers as you both exited the bar, she couldn’t wipe the smug smile off her face. As she pulled you to the exit she felt like she was parading around her prize, making sure to make eye contact with some of the people who had eyed you at the beginning of the night.
It was when you had her hands tangled in her hair and her lips locked to your neck that she really felt victorious. Conversation had naturally died the moment you entered her apartment and she pulled you in for a daring kiss. Now the two of you were pressed together in her bedroom and you were currently melting into her.
Kissing you felt different, Maya realized, but she quickly shoved that thought down when she heard your silent whimper as her teeth sunk into delicate skin. You were definitely the right choice, Maya thought as she practically shoved you onto her mattress. The way you looked up at her, with an innocence Maya was surprised to find and entirely too eager to ruin. She knew you would give her the control she was craving, even if you weren’t her usual target for nights like these.
A lot of tonight was surprising for the both of you, but what really shook Maya was the way she would slow down to take all of you in. Usually, when Maya had nights like these with random strangers, it was all about the physical aspect. She would lose herself in how it felt to make someone fall apart underneath her, but with you she found herself to be way more present. At one point, when she heard you cry out as her fingers pumped themselves inside you, she pulled back to watch your face as you fell apart under her. She reveled in the way you sounded and took in every single ragged breath and desperate moan. Her nights usually didn’t go more than a round or two, but with you she kept wanting more and taking exactly what she kept craving.
Your nails left marks down her back and her lips left bruises littered all over your chest. You panted and cried out for her again and again as her fingers kept working you up and over the edge. Both of you had lost track of the time when Maya had decided to take a break from filling you with her fingers only to bury her tongue between your legs. The way your hands flew to her hair and tugged as you let out pathetic, exhausted whimpers. She had really pushed you to the brink, and she was loving it.
Her eyes stayed locked on your face as she practically devoured you and all you could do was shake on her bed and fall apart yet again. Maya lost count of how often she did that to you, but she decided if she was going to stick with her one night rule, she was going to make the most of it with you.
Eventually she knew you couldn’t handle more. This was usually around the point when she would casually kick out the stranger and, more often than not, the other party would easily agree. Except when she crawled back up your naked body to see your head lulled back and your chest heaving as you tried to catch your breath from the orgasm she ripped from you, Maya didn’t think about asking you to leave. Instead, she pulled you into her arms, her hands brushing stray hairs from your face before she leaned back down to capture your lips.
Maya told herself it wasn’t safe to send you back to wherever you were staying in an uber. She made a mess out of you and it was at least her responsibility to tend to that. In the morning she could make sure the two of you parted ways for good. For now, Maya decided she would indulge in having someone else next to her as she slept. It had been so long since she let anyone stay over, and even if you were a stranger, the feeling felt nice to her. A little too nice, but Maya wasn’t going to acknowledge that.
—---------------------------
When the morning came Maya didn’t even have to kick you out. You had taken your leave while she was still asleep. She was so exhausted from all the activities of the night before that she slept like a rock, which surprised her considering she was sleeping next to a total stranger. Maya couldn’t believe how easy it was to fall asleep with you in her arms when she barely knew a thing about you. Yet, she honestly had the best night of sleep in her entire life. And a great night’s rest wasn’t the only thing you gave her either… Maya couldn’t help the smug smile that played on her lips as she replayed the way she had you falling apart around her fingers. One night with you just wasn’t enough. She almost wanted to call you for a repeat. Almost. But Maya didn’t do repeats and she wasn’t about to break that rule now.
The note you left on her nightstand with your number and an explanation of why you had to run out so early was charming, but Maya crumpled it up and threw it away regardless. It was too tempting to keep around. The sounds you made the night before kept playing in Maya’s head and it was entirely too much of an enticing idea for her to save your number and send you a quick text instructing you to come back over tonight.
Your note had simply said you couldn’t miss a meeting and encouraged her to text her soon for a proper dinner date. It almost made Maya feel bad she wasn’t doing the whole dating thing right now, but she was captain now and she had to get serious. There was no room in her life for anything messy. And, with her track record, every time she had a relationship it was messy. So maybe her eyes lingered on the crumpled paper in her trash can for a moment, but as she began to get ready for the day and head to the station, the memories of the past night faded and she became focused on the day ahead. With the steam she blew off last night she knew that today would be easy to get through.
—-------------------------------
And she was shocked at how right she was. She was giving directions and her team was following them without too many eye rolls or talk back. The confidence of the night before was keeping Maya’s chin up and her resolve to be 19’s best captain strong. Every once in a while, though, when she was sitting at her desk and alone her mind would wander. There would be flashes of the night before replaying in her head. The way you tasted, the way you would sound, how you felt when she had you writhing underneath her. She kept having to shake herself from that thought.
Each time her mind drifted, she would remind herself this craving to have you again would fade as the memory of you did. It wasn’t like she was ever going to see you again, she could easily forget the feelings you caused in her after just a few days. Maybe she would find someone new next week to blow off some steam with. Although, for some reason the thought of that made her stomach twist. She knew it would have to be a little while before she could pick someone up again. Everyone else would just be a disappointment. Maya’s craving for you felt so strong after this one night that she already decided to take a break from that bar, just in case she were to run into you again. She knew she would do whatever it took to convince you to come home with her again if that were the case.
As her shift came to a close she kept thinking about the crumpled paper with your number on it left in her trash can. When she finally was done and heading home, with each step she took closer to her apartment she was more and more tempted to save it from the trash and send you a text. She had such a good day at the station today, if she had you again maybe that would happen for a second day in a row.
But as she reached her apartment and saw the wrinkled paper at the top of her trash bin she used all of her will power to take the trash out to her apartment dumpster. With a heavy sigh she tossed it for good. That night as she threw her body down on the bed, she felt frustrated with herself for two reasons. The first being that she hated that she was so stuck on this one encounter with you and the second being that she had enough sense to throw away that damn note of yours.
Sleep did not come easily to her that night. She tossed and turned and before she knew it her alarm was going off and it was time to go back to the station.
If Maya was right about yesterday being a good day, she was worried she would be right about today being an awful one. So far, that was seeming more and more like it was the case. She had sprung on her that there would be a new member to the team; an out of state transfer. The team was already at each other’s throats today as it was, they didn’t need a new member throwing off their balance. Any time there was a new addition it was always an adjustment period that got messy. Maya couldn’t help the groan of frustration she let out as she hung up the phone. She only had two hours to prepare for the new person and she wasn’t in the mood.
The rest of the station all felt exactly the same as there was a collective groan much like Maya’s earlier that sounded throughout the room. Maya tried her best to play serious captain, lecturing them about being welcoming and working together before the new arrival was to come. They still seemed reluctant to follow her command.
After that all she could do was wait until she finally heard a knock on her office door. She took a couple deep breaths, muttering to herself a here we go before trying to plaster on her best “Captain Maya Bishop Smile” and standing to get the door. What she didn’t expect was the face waiting on the other side. Her smile immediately dropped as she took in who stood in front of her and, on top of that, her eyes nearly bugged out of her skull. She definitely knew she looked embarrassingly shocked at this moment, but so did the eyes staring back at her.
Right in front of her was the person that had been on her mind all day. Maya was in utter shock, but to her surprise it seemed like you were too. Your jaw was practically on the floor as you took in who stood in front of you. You had folders in your hand and the uniform you had on told her all she needed to know to realize you were the out-of-state transfer.
The way both of you froze, Maya’s hand still gripping the doorknob as she stood right in the way of either of you being able to step in probably also looked quite odd. In that moment Maya forgot all about being picture-perfect Captain Bishop and was just utterly confused at what sort of divine twist in fate was playing out before her eyes. It was like a dumpster fire and a trainwreck all at once in Maya’s mind and she couldn’t fathom how to handle this new development.
Just moments ago she was fighting the internal debate she was having about going back to the bar she found you in and desperately scoping it out until she saw your face again. She had successfully talked herself out of it about a minute before you knocked on the door and now it was like the universe was playing a sick joke on her. Taunting her with the thing that has been plaguing her mind for over 24 hours.
“Cap… Captain Maya Bishop,” Maya internally kicked herself as she tried to recover. Her hand leaving the door knob and extending towards you finally. In a split second, Maya had decided to play this off as a first meeting. It wasn’t her proudest moment, but she could see around the corner the odd way Andy was looking at the interaction between the two of you.
You looked down at her hand and then slowly back at her, confusion in your eyes. Of course, you knew her name. She gave you her name before she took you home from the bar that night, but slowly you were realizing the terrible truth. That Maya didn’t want you to acknowledge that you knew her at all. She watched with a gnawing guilt that settled in her stomach as your eyes flashed with hurt for a brief second before taking her hand and re-introducing yourself to her as if she hadn’t been seductively whispering your name into your ear while telling you all about how good you were for her just a few nights prior.
“Step into my office,” Maya said after uncomfortably clearing her throat once she dropped your hand from the awkward handshake you’d reluctantly complied to. “I’ll get you caught up.”
She walked slowly to the other side of the desk, having closed the door and locking it stealthily once you had stepped in as well. She didn’t need anyone interrupting, especially if details about the other night come up in this conversation.
However, she hoped you’d be normal about this. That you would take the hint that Maya was unwilling to acknowledge the history you two now shared. This meeting would be uncomfortable, she knew that, but she was going to do everything in her power to dodge the uncomfortable conversation she had done so well to avoid with all her one night stands up until this point. Especially now, when you were to be the new transfer and she was the captain, a relationship with someone she was meant to guide, to lead without trouble. And this—you appearing again out of nowhere—would not look good for her career.
She guided the conversation as much as possible. Sticking to the paperwork that you needed to have completed and what you needed to know before officially joining the station. You were incredibly silent other than when you had to respond to her. The bubbliness that was so present in your demeanor that night she found you in the bar was utterly gone now. Instead, you just seemed like a dark cloud across the desk from her. She knew that you were fully aware at this point of her usual game: That Maya had no intention of calling you back after that night and that she wasn’t going to acknowledge in the slightest that the two of you had shared amazing chemistry, and the most amazing sex Maya had ever had to date. But no, Maya couldn’t dwell on that part.
“Welcome to the station,” Maya finally said, standing from her desk to shake your hand again. You looked at her hand for a moment before taking it in a weak grasp. All had been said and done, and now all that was left was for you to start getting used to the team.
“Thank you,” you mumbled, dropping your hand from hers as if it burned. Without looking Maya in the eye, you finally stood and turned towards the door. Except, the look on your face, the one that made Maya feel as if she had kicked a puppy, was nagging at her.
But Maya was never one to handle these things well.
“Oh and (Y/N),” Maya’s voice stopped you right as your hand began to reach for her door. “I think it goes without saying, but please don’t bring up the other night.”
Maya watched as your body stiffened and she didn’t have to see your eyes to see that that blow was probably the last one she needed to make to get you to realize it was a one night thing. She was sure it had occurred to you already, but she needed to make sure she hammered the last nail in the coffin.
“It never happened, right?” Your voice was low, and Maya could hear the irritation in it. But, in her own selfishness, she was just relieved to hear those words.
“Correct,” she nodded as she leaned back in her office chair and watched you exit. You shut the door a bit harder than an average person would, but Maya figured she at least deserved that response for how big of an ass she was being to her new transfer.
————————————————————
Despite the initial awkwardness, things with you on the team were going quite well. You found your place after only a couple weeks, making fast friends with both Vic and Andy. And there was no mention or reveal of the history you had shared with Maya. However, that didn’t stop your presence from driving Maya absolutely crazy.
She was relieved that you hadn’t brought up the night the two of you had shared four months ago right before you started, but she was also being driven crazy by the memories of it. That coupled with the fact that you were in such close proximity had made things even worse. When you were around, Maya was on edge. It wasn’t even about whether or not you would reveal the shared secret anymore. It was just that she couldn’t figure out how to be around you.
After about a month or so, Maya decided to try to go to bars and pick up other people to blow off steam, but that didn’t work. She didn’t even get very far, she just found that she wasn’t into it. There was a voice in the back of her mind that kept telling her that whatever she was going to do, wouldn’t be the thing she really wanted–the type of night she craved. After trying and failing a couple times to pick up people, she finally gave up and entered a dry spell that put her on edge so badly it was affecting her whole team’s attitude. And all she could do was blame you. After all, wasn’t it your fault for not mentioning that you were transferring to work for her?
Logically, Maya knew you couldn’t have possibly known, but she wasn’t feeling very logical anytime you were around. Especially in the moments where it was just you and her in close spaces. Maya tried very hard to avoid those moments, but sometimes she wasn’t so lucky. She would find that when she went to work out in the station’s gym, she had the worst timing because it almost always was when you were already in there working out alone.
Instead of focusing on training, she would pick a spot behind you and–with a lot of shame and self loathing on her part–stare at your ass as you jogged on the treadmill. In the evenings that you two were both at the station, she would watch as you ate, mesmerized by the way you would lick your lips here and there. Wishing to reach over and clean your lips of crumbs. It was a struggle any time she was near you to just snap out of it. So Maya began planning a bit more strategically to avoid your presence, especially when there were fewer in the station at certain hours. But even then, there were moments when you were near that drove her wild and no amount of planning to avoid you could save her from the frustration that came with your presence as part of her team.
“So, you’ve been here awhile now?” Vic began idle chit chat as the three of you rode in the back of the truck back from a routine call.
“Yep, a few months,” you answered absentmindedly as you stared out the window. Maya knew you were looking so intently out the window to avoid looking anywhere near her.
“Plenty of time to explore, see the sights, maybe go on some dates..?”
You just snorted at that and shook your head.
“What? No dates?” Vic turned to you excitedly and Maya felt as if she was watching a trainwreck happen right in front of her. “We have to get you out there! Seriously, since you got here I swear all I’ve seen you do is work and occasionally go out with us. But only if we beg you. Let me set you up!”
“I don’t know…”
“Come on, I can find you a good guy.”
“Mm…” you gave her a hesitant look that told Vic all she needed to know.
“Girl?”
“Yeah,” you chuckled. “I mean– well no, I don’t want to be set up. But if I did, I’m uh…” your eyes glanced briefly at Maya before immediately looking back to the window “I’m into girls.”
“No, no, no,” Vic was leaning towards you with ever growing excitement and Maya felt her stomach twist as she listened to this conversation unfold with growing dread. “This is perfect! I have the perfect person for you.”
“Vic, I don’t know…”
“Trust me!” The truck was slowing to a stop finally as it pulled into the station, but Maya couldn’t let herself stop listening to what was happening between you and Vic. With each passing moment the dread changed into inexplicable anger.
“Listen,” Vic continued as you both hopped out and she fell into step next to you. “I have this friend–painfully single. Cute, kind, all of that. I promise she would love to go on a date with you. What do you say?”
“Vic…” your voice was a warning and Maya kicked herself for feeling so much joy over how you kept trying to shut Vic down.
Except, that feeling of triumph at watching you refuse was short lived. Vic’s persuasiveness won out in the end, to Maya’s begrudged horror.
“Oh, come on. Worst case scenario, you made a friend, right?” Vic knew all the right words to say to you apparently.
“I guess so,” you sighed and finally nodded and in a flash, Maya watched as Vic flung one arm around you and pulled out her phone with the other.
Maya didn’t follow much more of the conversation after that. She saw red the moment she heard the distant words come from Vic’s mouth. Something about giving your phone number to her friend and Vic nagging about making sure the date was sooner rather than later. Maya didn’t want to hear any more of it.
The rest of the evening Maya was in the worst possible mood.
The bad mood Maya was in actually lasted the whole rest of the week. Maya knew you had a date scheduled for Friday night and when that day came and went, Maya couldn’t relax. Her whole body was filled with a pure rage she was trying too hard to deny, but simply could not. You weren’t there Friday at all, which was planned as it was your day off. But it drove her even more crazy. And the fact that you also had the weekend off made things worse.
Maya couldn’t help but imagine the worst case scenario. That your date went amazing and she was doing all those things to you that Maya knew you liked. The things that she found out first, she thought with a twisted sort of smug pride as she stewed in her office for hours that Saturday morning.
Vic was in for most of the day that day, and she unfortunately had heard Vic telling people she thought the date went well. What made everything much worse was the way Vic had joked that she was already planning the wedding.
Maya gripped her coffee cup so tight that she thought she might crack it. But unluckily for her Andy had noticed and slyly took the cup from her hands.
Andy didn’t know about the night that the two of you shared, but Maya had a paranoid feeling that she may have started to piece things together. Here and there she had commented on the awkward, charged tension between the two of you. When Maya shrugged it off, Andy had responded with “I’ll let it go for now, but I want the details later.”
That’s when Maya made damn sure that later wouldn’t come for a while.
At this point, to keep her secret about the two of you, it felt like she was avoiding her entire team. Which was not a good look for a captain. But Maya didn’t think sleeping with the new transfer before her first day and then ghosting her was a good look either. So, she picked the lesser of two evils.
Still, as Maya continued to hear gossip about your date that day in passing from Vic, her anger grew. Eventually, as the evening stretched on into the later hours of the night, everyone who was in the station knew to avoid Maya all together.
So when Maya had her guard down, not expecting to see the number one person she was avoiding, she was in for a rude awakening. All she wanted was a damn shower, away from Vic’s excited daydreaming about you and her friend that she constantly shared with anyone who’d listen. Of course, you just had to be there when no one was expecting you.
This was the one place that Maya was extremely careful not to run into you. Yes, she ogled you a bit when you were near and she was trying to quit that bad habit with careful planning. But to run into you in the locker room or the showers when it was just the two of you… Maya knew that would be detrimental.
So, when she rounded the corner of the showers, thinking she was the only living soul in there only to run right into you? That’s when her biggest nightmare came true.
There you were, in nothing but a towel clutched to your chest while Maya stood before you, clothed in workout gear from a late night session to get the very person in front of her out of her mind. Why were you even here, she wondered. Was it simply to torment her even more?
“What are you doing here?” Maya didn’t even mean to say that outloud.
“O-oh, uh… My complex’s water is out and I really needed a shower…” Your eyes were filled with just as much shock as Maya felt and she couldn’t help the way hers glanced down as your hand tightened on the towel around you.
Her eyes may have lingered a bit too long on your chest, but then the words you said sunk in and while they may have sounded completely innocent to anyone else, Maya heard them differently. But could anyone blame her? When she was hearing all about the wonderful date you had with a mystery woman all day long, how could Maya’s mind not go to somewhere she was very much trying to avoid?
“That busy with your date, huh?” Maya’s words seemed innocent, but her tone was filled with venom.
“No,” you took a step back as if her tone physically wounded you. “I just needed a shower. Actually– It’s not even any of your business.”
“Of course not,” Maya snapped back, “Why would I care what you do?”
You stared at her for a moment in disbelief. How did taking a shower at the station turn into a strange argument with your captain? And over a first date that, despite what you told Vic, would probably not turn into a second one.
“I don’t know, Maya.” Your tone was more exhausted than frustrated, but you couldn’t stop yourself from picking at a wound you had an inkling was there. After all, Maya had been particularly irritating all week. “But for some reason, I really think you do.”
“Oh, please,” Maya scoffed, her arms crossing over her chest. “I just want to make sure what you’re doing doesn’t distract the others.”
“Distract the others or distract you?” You fired back quicker than Maya expected and she saw the pride in your eyes as you stared back at her. Your towel was still firmly gripped around your naked body, but Maya could see that you were standing your ground firmer than you had before.
“Don’t be so full of yourself!” Maya was grasping at straws, but she’d be damned if she let you win. “It was just one night, get over it.”
“You’re telling me to get over it?” You let out a bitter laugh, but stepped forward all the same, challenging Maya with your actions. “You’re the one who told me to forget that night! Yet, you’re also the one who’s throwing the fit that I went on one date. You’re not allowed to be upset about this.”
“I’m not upset.” Maya took a step towards you, against her better judgement, as if standing her ground this way would prove her point. “Why would I be upset? It was just one night.”
“Yeah, one forgettable night.” Your eyes narrowed as you nodded in stubborn agreement.
“It didn’t mean anything to me.” Maya took another step into your space, her eyes flashing as she watched yours for a sign that she hurt you. Anything to make you feel the frustration and anger she was feeling.
“Me either,” you fired back as you stepped closer into her space too.
“You could’ve been anyone else that night and it wouldn’t have mattered,” Maya hissed as she stood firm in your personal space. Both of you were breathing hard, the anger Maya was feeling was surely felt in you as well. “It was just meaningless sex.”
“You’re right,” you lean closer, your eyes daring, “just sex.”
“Just…” she took another, regrettable step forward, her eyes locked on your lips. “Life altering,” her breathing grew more rapid and so did yours, “earth shattering” with each word she watched as a faint blush spread through your cheeks “… sex.”
You didn’t respond. Instead her hands knotted in your still damp hair painfully as she pulled your face the rest of the way to close the gap between the two of you and crashed her lips into yours. Her kiss was searing, but it was everything she craved for far too long. Immediately, her other arm went around your waist and she pressed your body into her own. She felt your hand tighten harder, desperate to keep the towel between the two of you, but in that moment she felt another spark of anger at the hesitation. How dare you keep from her the thing she’s been denying herself for months?
While her teeth tugged at your bottom lip and a groan slipped from your parted lips, her hand in your hair moved to the hand holding your towel. With little resistance she tugged your own hand away from where it held the towel and immediately it fell between the two of you and onto the floor.
Both of you parted for a moment after that, a charged silence hung in the air and you breathed hard through your slightly opened mouth. Maya stared at you for just a second, her eyes locked with yours, your pupils blown and your face flushed, before looking down your body. Her mind flashed to the way she had looked at it with her marks littered over your chest months ago. She wanted to do it again. She was going to do it again. That thought resonated through her entire being and it was all it took for her to spring into action.
With both her hands on your hips, she quickly guided you back into the showers, not caring that her clothes were damp from pressing into your still wet body. Her lips immediately attacked yours again, tongue sweeping into your mouth as soon as you allowed her access.
The way you whimpered when her tongue ran against yours already had her completely drunk off the way you reacted. Your back hit the cold, tile wall of one of the shower stalls and immediately Maya ripped herself from your lips to drop to her knees.
She couldn’t tell what she wanted more, to taste you or to fill you, but her craving to claim you with her tongue won out so with one swift motion she had one of your legs over her shoulder and face was immediately buried into your pussy.
“Oh, my god,” you cried out when you felt her lips attach to your clit and begin to suck. One of your hands tangled itself into Maya’s hair while the other grasped at anything nearby to keep you up right. In this angle, Maya had perfect access to you. While her tongue was busy lapping at your clit, her hand moved up your thigh until it met right below where her tongue was. With another cry, you felt two of Maya’s fingers slip into you and immediately begin pumping in and out.
This was all happening so fast it was making your head spin, but that might also have been because of the way Maya was utterly claiming you with her tongue and fingers. Either way, you didn’t know you needed this so badly until you felt the way her fingers were filling you. You should’ve been ashamed of the sounds coming out of you in your place of work, or the way your hips were grinding of their own accord into Maya’s face as her tongue circled your clit and her fingers pumped harder and harder up into you.
It only took a couple more minutes of Maya’s tongue flicking your clit and her fingers pressing down on the spot that she found so easily the first time for you to cum, your thighs shaking as you did. Maya moved impossibly fast to push your thigh off her shoulder and then wrap your leg around her waist as she stood up. Her fingers never stopped as you came around them. In fact, they barely even slowed as she began to fuck you against the wall. Her teeth were now buried into your neck as you kept crying out in both delicious pain and pleasure.
Maya had officially lost herself in you, just as she had those months ago. She should’ve thought this through, but all she could do was keep taking from you all she craved. The way you whined out her name as she kept fucking you after your first orgasm was too tantalizing for her to stop. She pulled back for a moment to see your face, tears pricking at the corner of your eyes from just how hard Maya was fucking you, and she thought you looked incredible. In that moment, a voice in the back of her head said if she kept going, she would never be able to stop. But she also was too lost in the feeling of her fingers buried inside you to even consider putting an end to what was happening right now.
She felt you tighten around her fingers again, and with a few more pumps into you, she felt you cum again. Your body slumped forward to rest against hers and your head buried itself into her neck, but she wasn’t done.
“Come on,” She growled, “You and I both know you can take more than this.”
Despite that, Maya pulled her fingers out and you shuddered at the loss of feeling filled by her. Instead, she used her now free hand to hoist you up and, knowing how obedient you can be, she guessed accurately that you’d wrap your still shaking legs around your waist. With your naked body wrapped around hers, she carried you out of the shower room. She knew for a fact everyone else was either gone or nowhere near where the two of you were. She took you to one of the private rooms and immediately threw you on the bed.
You fell with a grunt, still not registering just yet all that had happened. Maya thought you looked cute, drunk off the two orgasms she gave you. She was far from done though.
“Hands and knees, face in the pillow and ass up. Can you do that?” Maya was already kneeling on the bed before you could even respond. You still had a dazed look on your face but when Maya grabbed your hips again and began flipping you over, you started to comply.
It was a vulnerable position, your hands were already gripping the metal rods of the headboard before Maya even slipped her fingers back into you. Before you could actually lean down with your head on the pillow and your ass up for Maya, however, she was already sinking her fingers back into you.
Immediately, upon slipping them in and pulling them out, Maya put her full force into the thrust to make you fall forward into the pillows. Which was a good thing, because it also made you let out a loud moan that probably echoed beyond the room. At least it was a little muffled with the help of the pillow she was forcing you to bury your face in.
Maya again set a brutal pace, kneeling behind you to put her body weight into each pump of her fingers. And then, when she pushed a third one into you, your moans were flowing nonstop into the pillow as your knuckles turned white from how hard they were gripping at anything they could reach.
Maya was leaning over you as she fucked you. Her hand came to your ass once or twice, smacking hard and watching as you jumped and you tightened around her fingers each time she did. She was in heaven, she had totally abandoned herself and all her rules tonight and for now she didn’t care.
She had one goal and that was to satisfy her craving of you. It also helped that, in doing so, she hoped you’d be too exhausted for any sort of second date with that girl Vic set you up with any time soon.
You were crying her name over and over again at this point, her fingers stretching you out so deliciously and hitting all the right spots the whole time. The way her hips pressed into you with each pump of her hand also made your head swim, and Maya couldn’t help the thought of doing this again but with something else entirely in place of her fingers. Anything to break you underneath her sounded good right now.
It didn’t take longer, a few more harsh pumps of her fingers and another stinging slap of her hand down onto your ass had you coming again with a low whine. Your body collapsed onto the bed, yet you immediately felt Maya’s lips kiss up your back to your ear.
“One minute and then we’re going again,” she whispered before running her tongue down your neck.
You nodded desperately, wanting more but already too lost in Maya to form a coherent sentence.
Three orgasms in and you both knew that was only the beginning.
———————————————————
The next morning it was Maya’s turn to leave you in her bed. She still needed to shower and you were knocked out from the night before.
Maya looked down smugly at your naked body, covered in hickeys and bite marks from the night before. But after a moment dread filled her again.
She had done this, she had broken her own rule and she couldn’t let this happen again. When the captain dates within the station, it’s always messy. But she wasn't dating you. It was just sex. Again.
She had to make sure it was the only time this was to happen with you under her command. She couldn’t risk her position as captain, so she decided it was best to go back to ignoring you.
But that didn’t last long at all. When Monday rolled around and you were on shift with both her and Vic, she didn’t realize just how prominent some of her hickeys were. You also sucked at hiding them, but you did at least try.
Except Vic noticed immediately and when the three of you were yet again in the truck riding back from a call, Vic had to unknowingly poke the bear that was a reluctantly jealous Maya.
“So, the date went that well?” Vic grinned over at you as you both rode back to the station.
Maya again was cursed to silently listen.
“It was fine.” You tried to be as dismissive as possible, but Vic took that as you being shy.
“Just fine?” Maya could hear the devilish grin in Vic’s voice. “Say that to the evidence. Damn! It looks like you got mauled by a vampire.”
“What?!” Your hand immediately flew up to your neck.
Maya was cursing herself and waiting for whatever poor excuse you were going to give. With any luck, Vic might buy it.
“Busted!” Vic chuckled and leaned back. Your hand was still covering your neck and Maya could tell you were scrambling to find anything to say. “Must’ve been a great night.”
“It’s— that’s—“ you were stuttering, desperate to find an excuse. But then you paused for a moment and Maya was curious to hear your response. “You got me,” you let out a nervous chuckle. “It was a crazy night.”
Maya didn’t expect that response. Logically, she knew it was your way of trying to deflect from the truth. Maya had placed that hickey. She knew she did. But logical Maya never seemed to be in the driver's seat when it came to you. Jealous Maya wondered what if it was there and she hadn’t noticed? What if you had gone out again Sunday and received it then? Jealous Maya couldn’t keep from balling her hands into fists as she listened closer to the conversation.
“I knew you two would hit it off!”
“You were right,” you agreed, but your tone was weak, not quite convincing. It didn’t seem to bother Vic though.
“When’s the next date?”
“Oh, it’s not set yet.”
“You need to call her! Maybe sometime we can do a double date!” Vic’s excitement was growing and Maya just begged the universe that the truck would go faster so they could arrive at the station and she could stop hearing everything that made her blood boil. “This is going to be great. I know for a fact she’s free the day you’re off next.” Vic was completely oblivious to your growing discomfort as she kept ranting on about date ideas.
“Yeah,” you gave Vic a nervous smile as all of you got out of the truck a few minutes later. “I’ll uh.. call her soon.”
“Nah, it’s already done!” Vic beamed with excitement. “I just checked if she’d want to meet up with you Friday.I know you a little by now, I knew you’d need the extra nudge.” Vic winked at you, not noticing Maya had stopped in her tracks in front of the both of you.
“Oh…” your voice was filled with hesitation, “thanks, what did she say?”
“You’re on for Friday!” Vic not once noticed your reluctance or the way Maya shook with rage as the both of you walked past.
And that was all it took for Maya to lose resolve. Friday night came, Maya found herself in front of your apartment—which was not her proudest moment since she had to look up your address from files she had on you—and she made sure you would miss your date. Maya had you on your back within minutes and utterly devoured you all night long.
And then it kept happening. Over and over again. Each time Maya would get jealous. Vic had figured out the girl she set you up with didn’t work out, so she kept trying. It was driving Maya crazy. She couldn’t just leave you alone. Really, Maya thought, this was Vic’s fault for pushing her buttons. Even if Vic had no idea.
Two months of this song and dance had gone by. Maya would get jealous, fuck you until you could barely walk, and say it was just sex. Then walk out and spend the rest of the week furious until the cycle restarted.
At least she was in a good mood for a couple days after fucking you. She took it out on everyone a little less. But people were starting to notice her constant volatile moods, especially Andy.
She may have known something, but Maya was sure it wasn’t the full truth. And Maya was okay with Andy wondering as much as she wanted, as long as she didn’t guess.
When the two of you weren’t fucking, Maya felt like she was doing a decent job at keeping her feelings at bay. But the thing was, she was having a harder and harder time denying that there weren’t some feelings.
When you were passed out from the nights the two of you spent together, Maya would linger. Holding you until the sun rose, brushing hair from your face, giving you soft touches and kisses when you were asleep. The idea of anyone else doing even just this with you felt like a kick in the gut to Maya. So she couldn’t deny that “just sex” was a bullshit excuse to explain this situation she found herself in.
She didn’t really have a plan to deal with any of it either. She thought maybe her feelings would go away, but then she would have to stop acting on her need to have you. So far, she’s failed miserably at it.
Then she thought maybe one of Vic’s blind dates would work and you’d stop giving in to her. But then Maya never even let you go on those dates. She kept showing up at just the right moment and consuming you in every single way so that you had no chance to make it to see another human being that night or even the next. You’d never make it to a date, because Maya would never let you. It was a fucked up cycle, but Maya knew deep down she wasn’t going to let it break.
Except, of course something had to eventually give. It always did, Maya knew it would. This was just in the worst possible way.
There was a bad fire. A building collapsed and you were in it. Maya was frantically giving her teams orders, but when she heard on an intercom that you were pinned by a beam and surrounded by flames, Andy had to physically hold her back.
She watched in utter horror when Jack carried your broken body out of the building and rushed it to the ambulance.
She looked at her team and the work that still needed to be done and then back at the ambulance that was packing you in. Duty over heart was what she always said but in the moment her whole world felt like it was caving in.
“Go,” Andy’s eyes said it all and Maya couldn’t begin to grasp the severity of that. “She needs you. I’ll handle the rest.”
That’s all it took for Maya to break out into a sprint and demand to ride in the ambulance with you.
You were rushed into surgery upon arrival. Broken ribs, a punctured lung and a few more things that Maya didn’t quite grasp. Her ears were ringing the minute the EMT said it was serious. Things didn’t look good and Maya couldn’t stop blaming herself.
After a while Andy appeared in the waiting room with Vic, Travis, and Warren not far behind.
“How is she?” Travis was the first to ask.
“I don’t— I’m not sure. They’re not telling me anything.” Maya had been pacing the waiting room, unable to sit still but unwilling to go far in case she missed an update. “I don’t know if she’s okay, if she’ll be okay. I don’t know a damn thing.”
“Hey, hey,” Warren stepped in. “She’s in good hands.”
“I know that,” Maya went back to pacing. “I know. But what if she won’t be okay?”
“She’s strong,” Vic said as she sat down and followed Maya with her eyes. “She’ll pull through this.”
“Yeah, and if she doesn’t?” Maya’s speed increased as worst case scenarios ran through her mind.
“She will,” Travis echoed.
“I can’t believe I let her go in there! I can’t believe she was so reckless and where was everyone? She shouldn’t have been alone so long. I should’ve gone in, I knew I should’ve handled it. This is all my fault.” Maya was spiraling at this point. Her hands were shaking as she kept pacing back and forth. She didn’t care who was in the room with her right now, all she could focus on was the images of your broken body laying in the ambulance next to her. She didn’t realize it until this very moment that she was actually living her worst nightmare and she wasn’t sure if she fully grasped why, but she was beginning to understand. “She’s hurt and this is my doing and if she doesn’t come through— if she doesn’t open her damn eyes again. I can’t— I don’t know what I’ll—“
“Hey,” Andy finally stepped in, cutting off Maya in her path that she kept pacing in. Her hands fell to both Maya’s shoulders. “This wasn’t anyone’s fault.”
A twist in Maya’s gut told her otherwise. You were upset with her before you ran in. The cycle had repeated and you were to be set up on another date. Only this time, it seemed to Maya like you actually wanted to go. So she got pushy earlier and you got angry. She knew you were getting tired of the cycle, she knew you hated when she left you alone in her bed.
She still did it because it felt easier than admitting the truth. But then you had reached your boiling point and you had told her you'd rather run into a burning building than hear her deny her feelings for you one more time. So that’s exactly what you did. And then you got hurt.
“You don’t understand,” Maya’s voice cracked and she squeezed her eyes shut. This was someone’s fault. This was her fault and Maya knew it.
“I do,” Andy’s eyes said it all. In those two simple words, Maya finally broke.
“I love her… I love her just so much,” Maya broke down, a sob wracking through her body.
Andy immediately pulled her into an embrace. The rest of the room was utterly silent apart from the gut wrenching sobs coming from their captain.
The shock in everyone was apparent, except Andy, who had guessed early on. Maya should be worried, she should be ashamed of this reaction, but she couldn't do anything other than cry into her friend’s shoulder and regret nearly every decision she’s made about you up until this point.
“I can’t lose her,” Maya’s voice trembled as she cried.
“I know.” Andy’s arms tightened around Maya.
“I love her,” Maya repeated again between sobs.
“Then what are you going to do about it when she comes out of this?” Andy’s question was gentle, but serious. Maya, in that moment, knew just how much Andy really did understand about her relationship with you. As Maya lifted her head she looked over to the three others on her team. Vic’s eyes were red rimmed, tears threatening to fall from seeing Maya’s desperate outburst. Travis looked back at her with surprise, but sad understanding, and Warren gave her a nod that told her, in this moment, he understood all and all would be okay.
It took hours of the five of them waiting before Maya was finally given an update.
She was so happy to hear what the doctor had to say that she couldn’t stop from another round of tears breaking loose. She was told it would be awhile before you would wake up, but she insisted on waiting. Eventually, you got a room and Maya parked herself on a chair next to your unconscious form.
The hospital didn’t seem the happiest that non-family was insisting on staying, but since Maya knew people in this hospital, she had strings pulled so she could ensure that she would never be removed from your side.
It still took even longer for you to wake up. But when finally, over 24 hours had passed, and you stirred, Maya immediately jumped to her feet.
Her hand went to yours, colder and paler than usual. Her thumb stroked the top of it, and when your eyes fluttered she immediately pressed the nurse call button.
“Hey,” her voice was barely above a whisper as she watched you begin to slowly blink your eyes open.
“Where… where am I?” Your voice was hoarse and she could tell it hurt you to speak. Probably from the breathing tube during your surgery.
“You’re in the hospital,” Maya spoke softly as she reached to push a strand of your hair from your face. “There was an accident, but everyone made it out. A nurse will come soon.”
You still clearly weren’t quite awake yet. Usually, you’d have questions, but Maya guessed that the medication they had you on, plus just waking from surgery, made you too groggy to respond well. You, instead, nodded weakly at her words, your eyes closing again and your head leaning back.
The nurse came in shortly after, checking vitals and verifying that everything was okay. He filled you in on what had happened, the surgery you had, and informed you that your doctor would be in when possible. The two of you thanked him as you left, but Maya remained standing by your side, her hand cradling yours as if it was the most delicate thing in the world.
She had texted folks briefly that you had woken up. Vic was nearby and was there shortly after receiving the text.
To your surprise, Maya still didn’t release your hand as she told Vic what the nurse said and how the doctor hadn’’t come to talk to you yet. Vic sat in a chair next to the both of you, and even then Maya still refused to let go of your hand.
For the most part, you didn’t question it. You greeted Vic but the both of them insisted it was okay to keep your eyes closed and head back to rest. After all, you had almost died. Maya insisted that meant that, despite the visitor, you needed all the rest you could get.
When Vic got a text that Travis was in the hospital but lost trying to find your room, she volunteered to find him and bring him to you. However, that left you and Maya alone again and while you still felt exhausted and a little bit delirious from the medicine, you finally had to ask. “Why haven’t you let go of my hand?” Your voice was quiet, but Maya’s attention was so focused on you that you knew she would hear.
“I don’t want to let go.” Maya said it as if it was the most simple thing in the world. Even if she knew her actions up until now made you think it was the last thing she wanted.
“People will see,” you turned your head to look at her now and Maya smiled softly at the slight surprise in your face when you found her intensely staring back at you. “Vic saw.”
“I know,” Maya released your hand to press her own to your cheek. “Let them see.”
“Why?” Maya let out a soft laugh at the simplicity of your question and the confusion in your eyes.
“Because they already know.” She smiled again as your brow furrowed in confusion. She didn’t need to wait for your question to know what you wanted to ask. “They all know how I feel about you. Kind of let the cat out of the bag when you got hurt.”
Maya gave you a sheepish grin and your brow furrowed again. “What do you mean?”
Maya’s eyes softened for a moment before her face turned serious. She leaned in closer to your face, her hand still pressed to your cheek. You expected her to look up to see if anyone was coming, but she never did. Instead, as she leaned so close to you that you could feel her breath tickle your lips, she whispered, “I mean… that they know that I love you and I can’t live another second without you.”
With that her lips pressed to yours ever so gently and your eyes fluttered closed as you enjoyed the feeling of the softness in Maya’s touch.
“I love you too,” you whispered before feeling Maya’s lips press slightly more firm on your own.
“Okay, lovebirds,” Travis’ voice broke your kiss and Maya pulled back slowly with a dazzling smile. “She just woke up. Let the girl rest first!”
“Come on,” Maya put her hands up in fake surrender. “You know I’ve been waiting to say that for a while!”
“Yeah,” Vic came in behind Travis with a cheeky smirk. “All it took was a burning building and a near death experience.”
“You better take good care of her,” Travis followed up, with a joking tone that held some seriousness to it.
“You know that I will,” Maya looked back at you now as she spoke. “For as long as she’ll have me.”
And those words told you all you needed to know now. That Maya was willing to build something real with you. That she was yours and you were hers. That now, finally, after months of pining and denying each other, you could be together. This was the beginning of something you both wanted for so long, even if Maya was the one to hold you both back from the one thing each of you needed.
She promised in that moment, as you nodded and gave her a genuine smile, that she wouldn’t deny herself again. She had wanted to be captain so long, she let it get in the way of other wants, other needs. She wanted you, needed you, to be hers. And now with you by her side, she could be both a good captain and build a fulfilling life. As she held your hand in her own she saw her future with you, one of success still, but one that also is filled with love. She couldn’t wait to indulge in every aspect that came with finally having you by her side.
Requested by anon: i would like to request maya x carina x yb, where reader is still in college/university and a whole active shooter situation happens. Yn is taken as hostage and eventually shot. carina and maya panic after finding yn has been taking hostage. Can you make this really angsty pls but with happy ending please.
Words: 1530
The day had started so normal it felt cruel in retrospect. Carina had kissed your forehead that morning, tucking a stray hair behind your ear as you balanced a piece of toast between your teeth and shoved textbooks into your bag.
“Don’t skip lunch,” she’d said, maternal warmth in her voice.
Maya had chimed in with a teasing smirk. “And don’t set anything on fire in chemistry.”
You had rolled your eyes at them both, cheeks warm with affection, and left the house with the easy confidence of someone who thought life would go on just as planned.
You had no idea it would all fall apart by noon.
—
It started with sirens. You’d been in the university library, laptop open, caffeine buzzing in your veins as you annotated slides for your next class. The first scream snapped your attention to the tall windows. People were running. Chaos splintered through the air like cracks in glass. That’s when you heard the gunshots.
Your heart stuttered in your chest. Instinct told you to hide, and you barely had time to scramble beneath the table before the library doors burst open.
A man was shouting orders no one could understand over the panic. Then his eyes, sharp and cold, settled on you.
"No sudden moves," he growled, dragging you from under the table by your arm.
Your stomach lurched, bile rising in your throat. You wanted to fight, to run. But the muzzle of his rifle was pressed so tightly against your ribs you could feel the chill of the metal. You were a hostage.
—
Maya’s radio crackled before the call came through her phone.
“Active shooter at Seattle U. Officers responding.”
Her blood turned to ice in her veins. She grabbed for her radio, her body moving before her brain could catch up.
Carina’s phone rang next. She was mid-patient consultation, but the moment she heard "Seattle University," the color drained from her face.
"No," she whispered, already tearing off her white coat, her heart thundering in her chest.
They met at the scene, panic tightening every muscle in their bodies as they watched the perimeter fill with flashing lights, armed officers, and barricades. Somewhere beyond the yellow tape, you were inside.
“I don’t see her,” Carina’s voice cracked, tears brimming as she scanned the frightened crowd of evacuees. “Maya, I don’t see her.”
Maya’s jaw clenched as she squeezed Carina’s hand so tightly it shook.“She’s still inside.”
—
Inside, your heart galloped so fast you thought it might explode. The gunman dragged you across the library floor, past overturned chairs and weeping students. You fought to keep your breathing steady, fought to keep your mind from fracturing under the weight of terror.
"I just need you to cooperate," the man barked, pacing like a caged animal. "If you move, you die. If anyone comes in here... you die first."
Your eyes burned with tears, but you refused to let them fall. You thought of Maya’s steadiness, Carina’s soothing touch. You clung to them like lifelines. Somehow you needed to survive this.
—
Outside, Maya was frantically demanding updates from the officers on the scene.
“There’s a hostage situation,” a negotiator confirmed grimly. “He’s barricaded in the library with at least one student.”
“One student?” Maya’s chest constricted. “Female? About this tall—” She gestured desperately.
“Yes,” the officer confirmed, regret in his eyes.
Carina let out a choked sob, covering her mouth with her hand. Maya wrapped an arm around her wife’s trembling shoulders, her own composure unraveling thread by thread. “She’s strong,” Maya whispered fiercely, more to herself than anyone else. “She’s stronger than he thinks.”
But deep down, fear clawed at her throat. God, please hold on, Y/N. Please.
—
Hours dragged by like centuries. The negotiator spoke through a bullhorn, trying to coax the man into releasing you. You could hear every word through the barricaded doors, but the gunman’s grip never loosened. His eyes were wild, fevered, lost to his desperation.
You were so cold and so tired. Every minute stretched into an eternity.
Then the standoff cracked wide open. A rookie officer had made a wrong move near the perimeter, too loud, too fast. The gunman’s panic spiked.
“No, no, no!” he shouted, dragging you upright and shoving the rifle against your back.
You cried out as pain jolted through you. And then — a deafening bang. Your body jolted violently as white-hot pain exploded through your side. You collapsed to the floor, your breath hitching in your throat. Everything blurred.
The sound of Maya’s scream, raw and broken, pierced the chaos. She was running toward the barricade, held back only by a swarm of officers.
“Y/N!” Carina’s voice was a tortured wail, her legs giving out beneath her.
Blood pooled beneath you, hot and sticky. Your vision swam, but you clung to consciousness with a desperate grip. I have to stay awake. I have to get back to them.
—
Time fractured into flashes. You heard shouting. Boots thundering toward you. Gunshots. The gunman went down in a hail of bullets, but you didn’t care about him.
Your gaze searched blindly for the faces you loved.
Then — Maya and Carina. They were there. Your vision cleared just long enough to see them pushing past paramedics, ignoring the warnings, collapsing to their knees beside you.
“No, no, no, amore mio, stay with us,” Carina begged, cradling your face with trembling hands.
Maya was pressing her hands over your wound, her fingers slick with your blood. “You’re okay, you’re going to be okay,” she lied, her voice shaking. “I’ve got you. We’ve got you.”
Your lips parted, a whisper of their names slipping out, weak but real.
“Stay with us, baby,” Carina pleaded, tears streaking down her cheeks. She kissed your forehead over and over as if she could will you back to life.
Maya’s face was carved from anguish. “You’re not leaving us, do you hear me? Not like this.”
You wanted to answer, to tell them you weren’t ready to go — but darkness dragged you under before you could.
—
The hours that followed were a nightmare. They weren’t allowed to ride in the ambulance, but Maya and Carina followed in their car, Maya running every red light, Carina sobbing prayers in Italian that her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
At the hospital, Maya barked orders at the trauma team like she was still captain, like she could somehow control this. Carina clung to her arm, unable to stop the tremor in her chest.
Time blurred again. Surgeons worked to stabilize you, to stop the bleeding. Maya and Carina watched through the glass, helpless and broken, holding onto each other as if they might shatter without the other’s weight.
Carina’s knees buckled when she saw them wheel you out of surgery. Maya caught her, holding her up even though she was just as close to collapse. The surgeon finally emerged, pulling off her cap, her expression grave but not defeated.
“She made it,” the doctor said. “The bullet missed major organs. She lost a lot of blood, but she’s stable.”
Carina wept openly, her knees giving out again, this time in gratitude. Maya sagged against the wall, tears finally slipping free as her chest heaved. They were allowed to see you a few hours later, once you were stable enough in the ICU.
You were pale and bruised, a maze of wires and tubes, but you were breathing. Carina curled up on the edge of your bed, her hand stroking your hair, her lips murmuring soft reassurances in Italian and English alike.
Maya sat on the other side, her fingers intertwined with yours, holding on as if letting go would send you slipping away again.
“You fought so hard,” Maya whispered, her voice raw. “You’re safe now, Y/N. You’re safe.”
And in the quiet that followed, your eyes fluttered open.
Carina let out a choked gasp, tears springing anew.
“Hey,” you rasped, your throat dry and weak.
Maya pressed a trembling kiss to your knuckles. “Hey, baby.”
Tears slid down your cheeks as you looked between them. “You found me,” you whispered.
“Always,” Carina promised, her voice thick with emotion. “Always.”
—
Recovery was long and painful. You had nightmares for weeks, jolting awake in the middle of the night, cold sweat on your skin. Carina would pull you into her arms, holding you close until your breathing steadied. Maya would whisper quiet reassurances, running her hands through your hair until sleep reclaimed you.
You had scars now, physical and emotional both. But you were alive. You were home. They didn’t leave your side. Not for a second. Carina kissed your temple every morning and every night, while Maya wrapped you in blankets like you were the most precious thing on earth.
“You scared the hell out of us,” Maya confessed one night, her voice thick as she traced the bandages on your side.
You managed a weak, but real, smile. “I wasn’t ready to leave you.”
Carina pressed her lips to your forehead, her tears wetting your skin. “And we weren’t ready to lose you.”
You closed your eyes, sinking into their embrace, feeling their warmth wrap around you like armor.
a/n: hey guys I'm pretty much new to writing, hopefully you guys enjoy this oneshot story :)
The sterile white walls of the facility seemed to mock you. You couldn't believe this was happening. Carina, her face a mask of concern that you now saw as manipulation, and Maya, her usual fiery spirit dimmed by what you perceived as a betrayal, had brought you here. "This is for your own good," Carina had said, her voice soft but firm, as they guided you through the imposing doors. Maya hadn't met your eyes, her silence a heavier accusation than any words.
Rage simmered beneath your skin. How dare they? How dare they decide this for you, without truly understanding? You were angry, hurt, and utterly alone in this place that felt like a prison. You turned to face them, your voice sharp, "You can't do this to me! This is insane! I hate you both!" The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of your fractured trust.
Maya finally looked at you, her eyes filled with a pain that mirrored your own, but it was too late. The damage was done. Carina stepped forward, reaching out a hand, but you recoiled as if burned. "Don't touch me," you spat, your gaze fixed on Maya, the one person you thought would always have your back. "You both just signed your own death warrants in my book."
The days that followed blurred into a monotonous cycle of therapy sessions, medication, and forced group activities. You remained defiant, your anger a shield against the perceived injustice. You refused to engage, to open up, to let them see the vulnerability that lay beneath your hardened exterior. Each therapist's attempt to "reach" you was met with stony silence or biting sarcasm. You saw their concern as a performance, their understanding as a lie.
Maya and Carina visited, their faces etched with a mixture of worry and a weariness you couldn't bring yourself to empathize with. Maya would try to speak, to explain, to apologize, but you'd cut her off, your words laced with the bitterness of your betrayal. "What do you want me to say, Maya? That I forgive you for locking me up? That I'm grateful for this 'help'?" Carina would attempt a gentler approach, her voice laced with a practiced calm, but you saw through it. "You think this is going to fix me?" you'd sneer. "You're just trying to control me, both of you."
You found yourself watching them, analyzing their every move, searching for any crack in their facade. You noticed the way Maya flinched when you spoke to her, the way Carina's smile never quite reached her eyes. It fueled your anger, solidifying your belief that they were orchestrating this entire charade, perhaps even enjoying your suffering. You were determined to make them regret this, to show them the consequences of crossing you.
One afternoon, during a particularly grueling individual therapy session, the dam finally broke. Not in a way that led to understanding or healing, but in a torrent of raw, unfiltered fury. You unleashed every ounce of your resentment, your pain, your accusations. You screamed at the therapist, at Maya and Carina who were observing from behind the one-way mirror, at the very walls that held you captive. You hurled insults, replayed every perceived slight, and declared your unwavering intention to make them pay. The outburst left you trembling, spent, but with a chilling sense of clarity: you would not be broken here. You would find a way out, and when you did, they would face the full force of your wrath.Six months later, the sterile white walls of the psychiatric facility finally receded, replaced by the stark, unforgiving reality of the outside world. You walked out not with a sense of freedom, but with a cold, hard resolve that had solidified during your involuntary stay. The time spent institutionalized, though meant to break you, had instead forged you into something sharper, something more dangerous. You had meticulously observed, learned, and planned. The police academy became your new battleground. It was a place where your controlled anger, your sharp intellect, and your newfound ruthlessness could be honed into a weapon. You excelled, driven by a singular purpose: to gain the power and authority to ensure no one could ever control you again. You pushed yourself relentlessly, the grueling physical and mental demands a welcome distraction from the lingering shadows of your past. You became a ghost in your own life, expertly weaving a narrative of a reformed individual, all the while harboring a deep-seated plan.Maya and Carina became distant memories, deliberately erased from your life. You changed your number, moved to a different part of the city, and severed all ties. When chance encounters were unavoidable, you’d offer a polite, almost imperceptible nod, your eyes holding a chilling emptiness that made them recoil. You saw their attempts to reconnect, their hesitant smiles, as pathetic pleas for forgiveness you would never grant. Their concern was a brand you refused to acknowledge, their past actions a debt that remained unpaid. You were on a new path, a path paved with justice, and they were no longer part of its landscape.
The air in the fire station clinic was thick with the scent of antiseptic and the low hum of emergency equipment. You stood by the double doors, your posture rigid, a silent sentinel. The weight of the uniform felt both foreign and familiar, a new skin you were still getting used to. Your gaze swept over the room, cataloging every detail, every potential threat, every exit. This was your domain now, a place where order was paramount. Then, the doors swung open, admitting a wave of concerned faces. Among them, you saw Maya and Carina. Their expressions were a mixture of relief and apprehension, a stark contrast to the controlled calm you’d cultivated. Carina’s eyes widened in surprise, and Maya’s breath hitched, her hand instinctively reaching for Carina’s arm. They looked at you, a stranger in uniform, guarding a doorway that had once been a threshold to a shared life. You met their gazes, your expression unreadable. There was no flicker of recognition, no warmth, just the cool professionalism of an officer on duty. You offered a curt nod, a silent acknowledgment of their presence, before turning your attention back to the doors, your duty calling you away from the ghosts of your past. The clinic was a place of healing, but for you, it was a post, a barrier, a reminder of the distance you had placed between then and now.
The sudden commotion shattered the clinic's fragile peace. A patient, eyes wild and unfocused, lunged at Maya, their movements erratic and violent. In an instant, your training kicked in. The controlled calm you projected evaporated, replaced by a surge of protective instinct. You moved with a speed that surprised even yourself, intercepting the attacker before they could inflict any real harm.Your hands were firm but not brutal as you subdued the struggling individual, bringing them down to the floor with practiced efficiency. Carina rushed to Maya's side, her face pale with fear, but Maya, though shaken, was unharmed. You remained positioned between them and the now-restrained patient, your gaze sharp, assessing the situation."Are you alright, ma'am?" you asked Maya, your voice level and professional, betraying none of the complex emotions churning beneath the surface. You met her wide, startled eyes, the shared history momentarily flashing between you, before you refocused on your duty, ensuring the immediate threat was neutralized and the clinic returned to a state of order.
As the adrenaline subsided, a tense quiet settled back into the clinic, punctuated only by the muffled sounds of paramedics attending to the agitated patient. Carina, her arm still around Maya, finally looked at you, her eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and a dawning recognition. Maya, catching her gaze, followed suit, her expression shifting from shock to a profound, unspoken understanding. You maintained your professional demeanor, your gaze sweeping the room to ensure no further disturbances. "The situation is under control," you stated, your voice steady. You offered a brief, almost imperceptible nod to Maya, a silent acknowledgment that passed between you, a flicker of the past in the present. Then, with the practiced economy of movement, you stepped back, resuming your post by the doors, the silent guardian once more, leaving Maya and Carina to process the unexpected reunion in the sterile confines of the clinic.
The sterile air of the hospital room felt heavy, thick with unspoken questions. You sat on the edge of the bed, the crisp white sheets a stark contrast to the turmoil in your mind. Carina and Maya had been evasive, their stories riddled with inconsistencies, but today, something felt different. A fragile resolve had settled over them, a shared decision to finally lay bare the truth.Maya began, her voice soft, almost a whisper, recounting the days leading up to your admission. She spoke of your mother's visits, her increasingly frantic pleas for you to be "helped," her descriptions of your behavior growing more alarming with each telling. Carina added details, the doctor's consultations, the fabricated reports of suicidal ideation, the manufactured evidence of self-harm. It was a carefully constructed narrative, designed to paint you as a danger, a narrative your own mother had so expertly crafted. The realization hit you like a physical blow. Your mother, the person you trusted most, had orchestrated this. The betrayal was a bitter pill, a sickening twist of the gut. Tears welled, not of sadness, but of a cold, hard anger. You looked at Carina and Maya, their faces etched with remorse and a shared burden, and understood. They hadn't wanted this, but they had been manipulated, caught in the crossfire of your mother's desperate, misguided actions. The hospital wasn't a place of healing; it was a prison built on lies, and the architect was the one person you never suspected.
You took a deep, shaky breath, the anger slowly giving way to a profound sadness. You looked at Carina and Maya, their faces a mixture of guilt and relief. You reached out, your hand finding Carina's, then Maya's."It's okay," you said, your voice raspy but firm. "It wasn't your fault. You were just trying to do what you thought was right. And Mom... she was probably scared. Scared of things she didn't understand." A small, sad smile touched your lips. "We'll figure this out. Together."

The apartment’s quiet safe for the mellow sound of the radio spilling dreamy jazz into the air, the dumb little duck lamp on the kitchen counter does its best to illuminate the little space, though it’s just blinding you every time you check the pasta.
By the time Maya comes home, boots thumping against the shoe rack and probably stinking up the entryway. A low groan you’ve learned to interpret - probably a slow day with lots of tool cleaning and driving grandmas to the hospital and back.
She sways through the doorway into the kitchen, eyes lidded and shoulders hunched. You don’t hesitate to take her into your arms when she practically folds into you.
“Hey, baby.” You whisper against her hair, arms steady and soft against her back. She mumbles something intelligible which vaguely sounds like ‘fucking exhausted’, you don’t blame her.
With a soft nudge you guide her back against the kitchen island and she pulls herself up with all the grace of a woman having worked her ass off in a fire department.
Your hands brush over her thighs when you find your place between her parted thighs, all gentle and warm. Her head drops to your shoulder with a shuddering breath and you know what she needs, a moment to not think - to not be ‘bishop’ the firefighter, just maya - your maya.
She doesn’t stop you when the buttons of her pants come undone, when your hands brush the fabric down her thighs like a promise and love all at once.
She’s warm and damp when your fingers brush over the navy blue panties covering her core. Her breath, shaky and warm fans against your shoulder but she doesn’t stop you, not when you slip a finger past the wetted fabric and into her glistening cunt.
Her hands tighten on your waist like you’re the only thing keeping her tethered to planet earth at this moment.
“Fuck” she whispers, voice barely there but you hear her just fine. “I got you” you murmur back, soft and anchoring.
Her walls are spongy and so familiar when your finger drives into her wet pussy steadily, thumb circling her clit in equal measure. Her breathy moans sound like music to your ears, like the finest melody to exist in this stratosphere.
When her walls clench and her nails dig into your waist you know - you just know she’s close.
“Let go, I’ve got you” you mumble against her hair, like a lighthouse guiding her to salvation. Maya buries her face in the crook of your neck with a choked groan and you swear - you’ve never heard anything quite as beautiful.
She twitches once, twice - her hips buck and then she sags against you with a shuddering breath. Blonde hair tickles your face but you’re too blissed to brush it away, too full of the pleasure you’ve given her.
“I love you.” She whispers, voice so soft and wrecked.
“Love you too.”

Saw an tiktok, and I need YOU to write me a fanfiction about please 🙏 "You've wasted my fucking time. Why are you here?" & "I don't know! Hit me if that makes you feel better!" and then Reader punches them, and the team is kinda proud. Station 19 / Carina x Maya please 💚
Sirens blared through the streets of Seattle as the Station 19 fire engine screeched around the corner. In the middle of the loud and chaotic hustle and bustle, you, the young firefighter on this team, sat with your heart pounding and a knot in your stomach. You had already been on numerous missions in the last few months, but this mission was different and more difficult than anything you had experienced before.
You were the youngest on the team, the newcomer, fresh out of the fire academy. You felt the pressure on you every time you slipped into your protective gear and made your way to the scene. But today that pressure seemed unbearable.
Sean Beckett, an actual experienced firefighter and team leader, gave the commands. His tone was harsh, but something about him was off. You saw it in his appearance, his looks and felt it in your gut that something was wrong. But what you didn't realized was that you would end up in a situation that would spiral out of control.
As you entered the burning multi-story building, you were hit with instant heat and the smoke made it hard to see. Sean gave instructions, but they sounded wrong, confusing. He repeated them several times, slurring every other word and often took routes around instead of getting to the point. You hesitated, but you couldn't stop following the instructions. You had to follow them so as not to rob the team of security and you trusted the decades of experience and authority of your team leader. But Sean Beckett hadn't told you that the floor you were in was already in danger of collapsing before the fire. Even though he had well-known beforehand.
Suddenly, part of the ceiling on the third floor collapsed and the fire spread rapidly. You ducked tot he side and were torn apart from your team. In the midst of the chaos, you also briefly lost your bearings. When your vision was clear again and the mixture of smoke and dust had cleared, you noticed a wildly waving hand fighting for your attention in the corner, calling for help.
"Captain, the ceiling collapsed and I was separated from the others. I suffered no injuries but I did spot a civilian that I am heading towards now." you said, running to save the person. But as you got closer, you realized it was too late. The man was severely trapped under a larger piece of concrete and the fire had already spread onto the walls where he was buried next to. You tried desperately to remove the mass from him but it was hopeless - you would never get the concrete block off him on your own.
You heard muffled screams behind you. Maya, Jack and Andy looked for you, but you couldn't leave, you were now trapped by the fire that had spread around you. The flames drew closer and you knew you were in danger. "Beckett, I'm stuck. The flames have trapped me, I need help."
But there was no answer. Nothing. Only silences that came to you inexplicably. "Beckett! Are you there? I need help!" you shouted desperately, looking around in panic. You tried to face your team, screaming for their names, and at that moment the dust above you trickled before the other part of the ceiling collapsed on you.
Everything went black and for a moment you thought this was the end. But then you heard your team's voices once again, this time closer and felt the slow shaking of the ground. Steps. Before hands grabbed you. You were pulled from the rubble.
As you looked around, briefly sitting down on one of the blocks to take a deep breath, you saw the worried faces of your colleagues. Andy stood there, her face marred by smoke and ash. She was limping as she pulled you up to get you back on your feet. "Are you okay?" She asked and you nodded silently, unable to speak.
A sudden wave of anger and self-doubt bubbled up inside you. Sean hadn't answered, had put you in danger, almost killed you because he didn't give instructions. And now a person lay dead in the rubble. The thoughts tormented you and grew stronger as the mission ended. You didn't know how to deal with it. But you promised yourself that you would hold Sean accountable for yourself and for everyone else on the team who was put in danger by him.
The smell of smoke and burnt materials still lingered in your hair as the team returned to the station. The operation had been disastrous and the mood was depressed. You felt especially worn out after almost losing your own life and those of others due to false commands given by Sean Beckett or his failure to respond at all.
The team gathered in the locker room to remove equipment and discuss the day's events. You sat quietly, your gaze fixed on the floor, while the others engaged in tired conversation and licked their wounds.
Finally Sean Beckett came in, his expression serious and tense. He was aware that something between him and you needed to be resolved and as he approached you, he could already feel the cold breath of anger radiating from you. "Y/n, I think we need to have a talk. In my office."
You abruptly stood up from Andy's side where you had been helping tend to her knee, your gaze locked on Sean as you confronted him in front of everyone. "Do it in front of everyone and tell them that you ignored my calls and I almost died because of it!" you spat in frustration, putting your arms under your chest before continuing. "You wasted my damn time and almost killed me. Why are you here if you can't give clear instructions?"
The words echoed in the locker room and an oppressive silence fell over the team. All eyes turned to Sean, who seemed speechless for a moment, sipping from his plastic cup before going back to proving his strength, completely off track. "I don't know! Hit me if it makes you feel better!" his voice shook and your fists clenched with emotion and pure anger.
The team froze as the situation threatened to escalate. Suddenly and unpredictably, with a look of immense frustration and determination on your face, you lunged and punched him in the face. A thud filled the cabin, followed by a moment of silence and the crack of the cup, its contents spilling all over the resilient flooring. Then there were loud shouts of surprise from the team, some hands of Maya and Warren holding parts of your body to pull you back.
Sean staggered back, surprised by the unexpected attack but also by the force of emotions that erupted from you. You hadn't held back, but had given free rein to your desperation. "And if you want to denounce me to the union about it, I will personally go there and tell them about you drinking on shift. Others may shy away from it because of the fear, but certainly not me."
As the excitement slowly died down and Sean pulled away without further words, Sullivan squeezed past you while Victoria still held you close, afraid that you would walk after him and smack him again, and inspected the liquid on the floor more accurate.
His fingers dipped into the brown liquid before he put them to his nose, his facial expression contorting sharply. "Whiskey. How did you know?" He asked you immediately, his gaze serious while pride nestled in his eyes. "His statements were unclear. Shy of light. Pale skin. Shaking while driving. Not to mention the stench that emanated from him just as he spoke to me."
The team realized you didn't need a protective cover and could fight your own battles. Andy had hugged you tightly from behind and spoke with a quiet smile. "You have shown that you are not only the youngest, but also one of the bravest and strongest here. We are proud of you."
You were celebrated for your authenticity and strength while feeling exhausted and relieved by the support of the team. The incident had changed something - not only in the relationship between you and your captain, but also in your self-confidence and your position within the team. You were no longer a newcomer, but a full member.
Maya breaks protocol during a five-alarm fire to save Y/N.
The acrid smell of smoke and burning chemicals filled the air as Maya Bishop stood outside the blazing factory, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. The orange glow of the flames reflected off her helmet, casting dancing shadows across her face as she watched the inferno consume the three-story building. Chief Ripley's voice cut through the chaos around her, barking orders and coordinating the multi-station response, but Maya's attention was split between her triage duties and the radio chatter crackling through her earpiece.
"Bishop, I need you focused on the civilians," Ripley called out, his voice carrying the weight of command that had kept Seattle Fire Department running smoothly for years. Maya nodded curtly, turning back to the makeshift triage area where Vic and Warren were working alongside firefighters from Stations 12 and 7. The factory workers they'd managed to evacuate sat on gurneys and folding chairs, most suffering from smoke inhalation and minor burns, their eyes wide with shock and gratitude.
But even as Maya checked vitals and administered oxygen, her mind kept drifting to the voices coming through the radio. Travis, Warren, Jack, and Andy were all inside, part of the interior attack team working to contain the blaze and search for any remaining workers. And somewhere in that maze of smoke and flame was Y/N L/N, Maya's girlfriend of three years and the lieutenant who commanded Station 15's crew.
Maya's stomach clenched every time she heard radio silence stretch too long. She'd met Y/N at an SFD barbecue, drawn to her infectious laugh and the way she commanded respect without raising her voice. Three years together had taught Maya that Y/N was careful, methodical, and one of the best firefighters in the department. Station 15 had a reputation for being solid and reliable, and Maya knew Y/N's crew would have her back. The fact that they'd been paired with Station 19 for this call should have been reassuring, but Maya couldn't shake the knot of anxiety in her chest.
"Captain Bishop, we've got another batch coming out," Vic called, gesturing toward the building's east exit where several firefighters were emerging with two more factory workers. Maya pushed her worry aside and focused on her job, triaging the new arrivals and directing them to appropriate care.
The radio crackled with updates every few minutes. "Interior teams, report status," came Ripley's voice.
"Station 19, second floor clear, moving to third," Andy's voice responded.
"Station 15, first floor search complete, no additional civilians found," Y/N's voice came through, steady and professional despite the obvious strain of working in the harsh conditions.
Maya felt some of the tension leave her shoulders at hearing her girlfriend's voice. Y/N sounded strong, in control. They'd done this hundreds of times before. Everything would be fine.
That's when the world seemed to explode.
The sound was deafening—a groaning, tearing noise that seemed to come from the very bones of the building, followed by a crash that shook the ground beneath their feet. Maya spun toward the factory just in time to see a section of the third floor collapse inward, sending a shower of sparks and debris cascading down. The radio erupted with chatter as firefighters outside scrambled to assess the damage.
"All interior teams, report immediately," Ripley's voice cut through the noise, sharp with urgency.
"Station 19, we're okay. Third floor team is cut off but uninjured," came Travis's voice.
"Station 7, first floor, we're good."
"Station 12, basement level, all clear."
Maya held her breath, waiting for the response she needed to hear most.
"Station 15..." Static filled the airwaves. "Station 15, report."
More static. Maya's heart began to pound.
"Station 15, Lieutenant L/N, please respond."
The silence stretched on, feeling like hours instead of seconds. Maya found herself taking an unconscious step toward the building before Vic's hand on her arm stopped her.
"They're probably just in a dead zone," Vic said quietly, but Maya could hear the worry in her voice too.
Finally, Andy's voice crackled through: "Chief, this is Herrera. Duval and I are okay, but..." The pause felt eternal. "Y/L/N is pinned under a support beam. We can't lift it by ourselves. She's... she's in and out of consciousness."
Maya's world narrowed to a single point of focus. Without conscious thought, she was moving toward the equipment truck, pulling on her breathing apparatus and checking her gear. The voices around her seemed to fade into background noise as her training took over.
"Bishop!" Ripley's voice cut through her tunnel vision. "Stand down. We're sending in a rescue team."
Maya ignored him, continuing to gear up. She grabbed her halligan bar and axe, muscle memory guiding her movements.
"Captain Bishop, I'm ordering you to stand down!" Ripley's voice was closer now, more insistent.
Maya finally looked up at him, her blue eyes blazing with determination. "With all due respect, Chief, that's my girlfriend in there."
"And this is my scene, and you're under my command," Ripley shot back. "I can't have you going in there emotional. You'll get yourself and others killed."
For a moment, they stared at each other, the weight of command and love creating an impossible tension. Then Maya keyed her radio.
"Andy, what's your location?"
"Maya, don't—" Ripley started.
"First floor, southwest corner, near the loading dock," Andy's voice came back immediately. She knew there was no stopping Maya Bishop when someone she loved was in danger.
Maya was already moving toward the building. Behind her, she could hear Ripley cursing and calling for backup teams to follow her in. She knew she'd face consequences later, but right now, the only thing that mattered was getting to Y/N.
The interior of the factory was a hellscape of smoke and heat. Even with her breathing apparatus, Maya could feel the oppressive weight of the atmosphere as she made her way through corridors filled with debris. Her flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating a path toward the southwest corner. Every step felt like it took forever, every turn could reveal disaster.
"Andy, I'm on the first floor, heading your way," Maya radioed.
"Copy that, Maya. We're about fifty feet from the loading dock. Follow the sound of my voice."
Maya could hear Andy calling out, a steady beacon in the chaos. When she finally rounded the corner and saw them, her heart nearly stopped. Y/N was lying on her side, a massive steel beam across her legs, her helmet askew and her face pale. Andy and Duval, Station 15's probie, were positioned at either end of the beam, clearly having tried unsuccessfully to lift it.
"How long has she been unconscious?" Maya asked, dropping to her knees beside Y/N's head.
"On and off for about ten minutes," Andy replied. "She was talking when it first happened, but..."
Y/N's eyes fluttered open at the sound of Maya's voice. "Maya?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What are you doing here?"
"Coming to get you out of here," Maya said, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her. She quickly assessed Y/N's condition—the beam was across both legs just above the knees, and there was a small cut on her forehead that was bleeding, but she was conscious and breathing steadily.
"Can't... can't feel my legs," Y/N mumbled, her eyes struggling to focus.
"That's okay, baby. We're going to get you out of here." Maya turned to Andy and Duval. "On three, we lift together. I'll pull her out."
They positioned themselves around the beam. Maya could hear more firefighters approaching—Ripley's backup team. Good. They'd need all the help they could get.
"One... two... three!"
The three of them strained against the beam, their muscles burning with the effort. It moved slightly, enough for Maya to pull Y/N a few inches, but not enough to free her completely.
"Again!" Maya called out. "One... two... three!"
This time, Travis and Warren arrived just in time to add their strength to the effort. The beam lifted enough for Maya to drag Y/N clear, and they immediately began preparing her for transport.
The journey out of the building felt both endless and too short. Y/N drifted in and out of consciousness, and Maya found herself talking constantly, trying to keep her girlfriend alert and focused.
"Stay with me, Y/N. Talk to me about something. Anything."
"Tired," Y/N mumbled. "Want to sleep."
"No sleeping yet. Tell me about that vacation you wanted to take. The one to the mountains."
"Mountains..." Y/N's eyes fluttered. "Camping. You hate camping."
"I'd go camping for you," Maya said, and meant it. "I'd sleep in a tent and eat beans from a can if that's what you wanted."
Y/N managed a weak smile. "Liar."
"Maybe," Maya admitted, relief flooding through her at Y/N's response. "But I'd try."
When they finally emerged from the building, the outside world felt impossibly bright and clean. The medical team was waiting with a stretcher, and Maya had to force herself to step back and let them work. She watched as they loaded Y/N into the ambulance, her girlfriend's face pale and still against the stark white of the stretcher.
"I'm riding with her," Maya announced, moving toward the ambulance.
"Family only," the paramedic started to say.
"She is family," Maya said firmly, and something in her tone made the paramedic step aside.
******
The emergency room at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was a controlled chaos of activity, but Maya felt like she was moving through molasses as she followed Y/N's stretcher through the automatic doors. The fluorescent lights were harsh after the orange glow of the fire, and the antiseptic smell was a sharp contrast to the smoke that still clung to her gear.
"What do we have?" Dr. Owen Hunt called out as the trauma team surrounded Y/N's stretcher.
"Twenty-eight-year-old female, firefighter, pinned under a steel beam for approximately fifteen minutes," the paramedic rattled off. "Possible head injury, definite lower extremity trauma, in and out of consciousness at the scene."
Maya tried to follow them into the trauma bay, but a nurse gently but firmly stopped her. "I'm sorry, you'll have to wait outside."
"But I'm—"
"Family can wait in the waiting room. Someone will update you as soon as possible."
Maya wanted to argue, to pull rank, to do something, but she recognized the futility. Instead, she found herself standing in the hallway, still in her turnout gear, watching through a small window as the medical team worked on the person she loved most in the world.
"Captain Bishop?"
Maya turned to find Chief Ripley approaching, his expression unreadable. Her stomach dropped as she remembered her insubordination at the scene.
"Chief," she said, straightening her shoulders and preparing for whatever was coming.
But instead of the dressing-down she expected, Ripley's expression softened slightly. "How is she?"
"I don't know yet. They just took her in." Maya's voice was hoarser than she'd realized.
Ripley nodded, then gestured toward a small family waiting area. "Let's sit down."
They sat in uncomfortable plastic chairs, the silence stretching between them. Maya could see other Station 19 crew members arriving—Vic, Warren, Travis, Jack. Even some of the Station 15 crew had shown up. The firefighter family taking care of their own.
"You know I have to write this up," Ripley said finally.
Maya nodded. "I know. I disobeyed a direct order."
"You endangered yourself and potentially the rescue team."
"Yes, sir."
Ripley was quiet for a long moment. "I also know that if it had been Vic in there, I would have done the same damn thing."
Maya looked at him in surprise. Ripley was known for being by-the-book, professional to a fault.
"The official report will note that you acted recklessly and will face appropriate disciplinary action," he continued. "Unofficially, you saved one of ours. Again."
Before Maya could respond, Dr. Hunt emerged from the trauma bay, still in his scrubs. Maya shot to her feet, her heart racing.
"Are you Y/N's family?" Dr. Hunt asked.
"Yes," Maya said without hesitation. "How is she?"
"She's stable," Dr. Hunt said, and Maya felt her knees nearly buckle with relief. "She has a moderate concussion and fractures to both legs—the right tibia and fibula, and the left femur. The good news is there's no sign of spinal cord injury, and the head injury, while concerning, doesn't appear to be severe."
"Surgery?" Maya asked.
"Yes, she'll need surgery to repair the fractures. We're scheduling her for this evening. The orthopedic surgeon will want to put rods and plates in both legs. It's going to be a long recovery, but with physical therapy, she should regain full function."
Maya nodded, processing the information. Surgery. Recovery. But Y/N was alive, and she was going to be okay.
"Can I see her?"
"She's being prepped for surgery now, but you can see her briefly before she goes up."
Dr. Hunt led Maya to a pre-op room where Y/N lay on a hospital bed, looking impossibly small and vulnerable in a hospital gown. Her legs were immobilized in temporary splints, and there was a bandage on her forehead where the cut had been cleaned and stitched. But her eyes were open and alert when Maya walked in.
"Hey there, hero," Y/N said softly, managing a weak smile.
"Hero?" Maya pulled a chair close to the bed and took Y/N's hand carefully, mindful of the IV. "You're the one who was doing search and rescue in a burning building."
"And you're the one who came in after me, even though you were supposed to stay outside." Y/N's eyes were serious now. "Maya, you could have been hurt. You could have—"
"Hey." Maya squeezed her hand gently. "I'm fine. You're fine. That's all that matters."
"Ripley's going to suspend you."
Maya shrugged. "Probably. Worth it, though."
Y/N was quiet for a moment, studying Maya's face. "I love you, you know that?"
"I love you too. More than you know."
A nurse appeared in the doorway. "Ms. L/N? We're ready to take you up to surgery."
Maya stood and leaned down to kiss Y/N's forehead gently. "I'll be here when you wake up."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
******
The surgery took four hours. Maya spent every minute of it in the waiting room, alternating between pacing and sitting rigidly in the uncomfortable chairs. The rest of the Station 19 crew had been sent home by Ripley after the first hour—they'd been on shift for nearly twenty-four hours and needed rest. But Maya couldn't leave, wouldn't leave, not until she knew Y/N was okay.
Vic had tried to convince her to at least change out of her turnout gear, but Maya barely heard her. Her world had narrowed to this waiting room and the surgery happening somewhere above her head.
Chief Ripley had stayed too, which surprised Maya. He sat quietly in the corner, occasionally making phone calls or checking his messages, but always returning to keep his silent vigil. It wasn't until nearly midnight that he finally approached Maya.
"Captain Bishop," he said, settling into the seat beside her.
Maya looked up from her hands, which she'd been staring at for the past hour. "Chief."
"Look, I've been thinking about today. About what happened at the scene." Ripley's voice was measured, careful. "Officially, I have to suspend you for a week. Disobeying direct orders, endangering personnel, acting outside of command structure—it's all in the book, and I have to follow protocol."
Maya nodded. She'd expected as much.
"But between you and me," Ripley continued, his voice softer now, "I understand why you did it. If it had been Vic in there..." He trailed off, shaking his head. "I probably would have done the same thing."
"Thank you, Chief. I understand about the suspension."
"Good." Ripley stood up. "Now, when Lieutenant L/N wakes up, you tell her that Station 15 is covered until she's back on her feet. And you—" He pointed at Maya. "You take care of her. Take care of yourself. That's an order."
"Yes, sir."
Ripley left, and Maya was alone again with her thoughts and the constant background noise of the hospital. It wasn't until nearly 2 AM that Dr. Torres, the orthopedic surgeon, finally appeared in the waiting room.
"Ms. Bishop?" she called out.
Maya jumped up so quickly she nearly knocked over her chair. "Yes, that's me. How is she?"
"The surgery went well," Dr. Torres said with a smile. "We were able to repair both fractures successfully. The right leg required a plate and several screws, and the left leg has a rod running through the femur. She's going to have a long recovery ahead of her—probably six to eight weeks before she can put any weight on the legs, and several months of physical therapy after that—but she should make a full recovery."
"Can I see her?"
"She's in recovery now, still unconscious from the anesthesia. We'll move her to a room in about an hour, and then you can see her."
Maya nodded, relief flooding through her so intensely that she had to sit down. Y/N was okay. The surgery was successful. Everything was going to be all right.
It was another two hours before Maya was finally allowed into Y/N's room. The sight of her girlfriend lying in the hospital bed, both legs in heavy casts elevated on pillows, made Maya's chest tight with emotion. Y/N looked so pale against the white sheets, so still and vulnerable. But she was breathing steadily, and the monitors showed strong, regular vital signs.
Maya pulled the visitor's chair as close to the bed as possible and settled in to wait. She must have dozed off at some point, because the next thing she knew, she was being awakened by a soft voice calling her name.
"Maya?"
Maya's eyes snapped open to find Y/N looking at her with groggy but alert eyes. "Hey," Maya said softly, reaching for Y/N's hand. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a truck," Y/N said, her voice raspy. "Or maybe a steel beam."
Maya managed a laugh despite her exhaustion. "Too soon for jokes about steel beams."
"Where am I?" Y/N asked, looking around the room with confusion.
"Grey Sloan Memorial. You've been in surgery. Do you remember what happened?"
Y/N was quiet for a moment, her brow furrowed in concentration. "The factory. The collapse. I remember being trapped, and then you showed up." Her eyes focused on Maya with more clarity. "You came into the building for me."
"Of course I did."
"Maya." Y/N's voice was serious now. "You could have been killed."
"But I wasn't. And neither were you. That's what matters."
Y/N studied her for a long moment. "What's the damage? And don't sugarcoat it."
Maya took a deep breath. "Moderate concussion, which is why you're probably feeling foggy. Two broken legs—right tibia and fibula, left femur. You had surgery to repair them. The doctor says six to eight weeks before you can put weight on them, then physical therapy."
"Months," Y/N said quietly.
"Months," Maya confirmed. "But you're going to be okay. Full recovery expected."
Y/N nodded slowly, processing the information. "The crew? Everyone else okay?"
"Some minor smoke inhalation and burns, but no other serious injuries. No civilian casualties either."
"Good." Y/N closed her eyes briefly. "I'm tired."
"Then sleep," Maya said, squeezing her hand gently. "I'll be here."
"You need to go home, Maya. You've been on shift for over twenty-four hours."
"I'm suspended anyway," Maya said with a shrug. "Ripley gave me a week off for my little unauthorized rescue mission."
Y/N's eyes opened again, wide with concern. "Maya, I'm so sorry. I never wanted—"
"Hey." Maya leaned forward, her voice firm but gentle. "I'm not sorry. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I love you, Y/N. I love you more than I've ever loved anyone, and I couldn't just stand outside and wait while you were trapped in there."
Tears started to form in Y/N's eyes. "I love you too. So much."
Maya leaned down and kissed Y/N's forehead softly. "Now get some sleep. We've got a long recovery ahead of us."
As Y/N drifted back to sleep, Maya settled back in her chair, finally allowing herself to fully process everything that had happened. The fear, the adrenaline, the relief—it all hit her at once, and she had to take several deep breaths to steady herself.
But as she watched Y/N sleep peacefully, Maya's thoughts drifted to the small velvet box hidden in her dresser drawer at home. She'd bought the ring six months ago, had been carrying it around in her pocket or her bag for weeks, waiting for the perfect moment. There never seemed to be a perfect moment in their line of work—always another call, another emergency, another crisis.
But sitting here in this hospital room, watching the steady rise and fall of Y/N's chest, Maya realized that maybe the perfect moment wasn't about perfect circumstances. Maybe it was just about knowing, without any doubt, that this was the person you wanted to face every imperfect moment with.
Y/N stirred slightly in her sleep, and Maya reached out to gently smooth a strand of hair away from her face. When Y/N was fully recovered, when they were both back on their feet and this nightmare was behind them, Maya was going to ask her to marry her. And for the first time since buying the ring, she wasn't nervous about Y/N's answer.
She knew, with the same certainty that had driven her into that burning building, that Y/N would say yes.
******
Six months later, the physical therapy clinic was bustling with activity on a Tuesday morning, but Maya only had eyes for Y/N as she made her way across the parallel bars without any assistance. It had been a long six months—longer than either of them had anticipated—but Y/N's determination and the excellent care at Grey Sloan had paid off.
"Looking good, Lieutenant," Maya called out from her seat in the waiting area.
Y/N grinned and gave her a thumbs up before carefully turning around to walk back the other direction. Her gait wasn't quite normal yet, and Maya could see the concentration on her face with each step, but she was walking. Really walking, without crutches or a walker or any assistance at all.
"She's made remarkable progress," said Gloria, Y/N's physical therapist, settling into the seat next to Maya. "I've seen a lot of patients with similar injuries, and most don't recover this quickly or completely."
"She's stubborn," Maya said with pride. "When she sets her mind to something, there's no stopping her."
"Must run in the relationship," Gloria said with a knowing smile. "I heard about how she ended up here in the first place."
Maya felt heat rise in her cheeks. The story of her unauthorized rescue had become something of a legend around the SFD, despite her attempts to downplay it.
"Captain Bishop?" Y/N called out, using Maya's formal title teasingly. "Ready to go?"
Maya stood up and walked over to help Y/N gather her things. "How are you feeling?"
"Good. Tired, but good." Y/N accepted Maya's arm for balance as they headed toward the exit. "Gloria says I can go back to light duty next week."
"That's amazing, babe." Maya held the door open for her. "Though I have to admit, I've gotten used to having you home when I get back from shifts."
"Well, you better enjoy it while it lasts," Y/N said as they walked slowly toward Maya's car. "Because once I'm cleared for full duty, we're both going to be back to our crazy schedules."
Maya helped Y/N into the passenger seat, then walked around to the driver's side. As she started the engine, she could feel the small weight of the ring box in her jacket pocket. She'd been carrying it around again for the past month, ever since Y/N had been cleared to walk without assistance.
"Hey," Maya said as they pulled out of the parking lot, "want to take a detour through the park? It's a beautiful day."
Y/N looked at her suspiciously. "Since when do you suggest detours through the park?"
"Since I have a girlfriend who's been cooped up in hospitals and PT clinics for six months and might enjoy some fresh air," Maya said, trying to keep her voice casual.
"Okay," Y/N said, settling back in her seat. "But if this is some elaborate plan to make me exercise more, I'm going to be very cranky."
Maya laughed, her free hand unconsciously touching the ring box through her jacket. "No exercise required, I promise."
Fifteen minutes later, they were sitting on a bench overlooking the small lake in the center of Seattle's Discovery Park. Y/N had her legs stretched out in front of her, and Maya was trying to calm her racing heart. She'd been planning this moment for weeks, but now that it was here, she felt more nervous than she had walking into that burning factory.
"This is nice," Y/N said, tilting her face up toward the sun. "I'd forgotten how good it feels to just sit outside and do nothing."
"Y/N," Maya said, turning to face her girlfriend fully.
"Mm?"
"I need to tell you something."
Y/N opened her eyes and looked at Maya, immediately picking up on the serious tone in her voice. "What is it? Is everything okay?"
"Everything's perfect," Maya said quickly. "That's actually what I want to talk about."
Y/N raised an eyebrow, waiting.
Maya took a deep breath. "Six months ago, when I saw that beam fall and heard Andy say you were trapped, I felt something I'd never felt before. Not just fear—I've been scared on calls plenty of times. This was different. It was like someone had reached into my chest and torn out my heart."
Y/N's expression softened. "Maya..."
"Let me finish," Maya said, pulling the ring box from her pocket. Y/N's eyes went wide. "I realized in that moment that I couldn't imagine my life without you. Not just because I love you, but because you make me better. You make me braver, and calmer, and more myself than I've ever been."
Maya slid off the bench and onto one knee, opening the ring box to reveal a simple but elegant solitaire diamond ring. Y/N's hands flew to her mouth.
"Y/N L/N, will you marry me?"
For a moment, Y/N just stared at her, tears streaming down her face. Then she was nodding frantically, trying to speak through her sobs.
"Yes," she finally managed to get out. "Yes, of course, yes!"
Maya slipped the ring onto Y/N's finger with shaking hands, then stood up to kiss her fiancée. They were both crying and laughing at the same time, and Maya had never felt happier in her entire life.
"I love you so much," Y/N whispered against Maya's lips.
"I love you too," Maya replied. "Forever."
As they sat back down on the bench, Y/N admiring her ring and Maya's arm around her shoulders, Maya couldn't help but think about how much their lives had changed in the past six months. The fire, the injury, the long recovery—it had all been terrifying and difficult. But it had also shown them both what really mattered.
"So," Y/N said, leaning against Maya's shoulder, "when do you want to have this wedding?"
"Tomorrow?" Maya suggested, only half joking.
Y/N laughed. "How about we wait until I can walk down an aisle without limping?"
"Deal," Maya said, pressing a kiss to the top of Y/N's head. "But I'm not waiting any longer than I have to."
"Good thing I'm a fast healer," Y/N said with a grin.
As they sat there in the sunshine, planning their future together, Maya reflected on the long journey that had brought them to this moment. It hadn't been easy—their jobs would always be dangerous, their schedules would always be crazy, and there would always be more emergencies and crises ahead.
But they would face all of it together, as partners in every sense of the word. And that made everything else worth it.
