faft opt down is so so important to me bc. with the normal note, it's hopeful. they could wake up somewhere better. somewhere safe. they could be okay together. it could be possible. but with the opt down, it's a realization. ponyboy already knows how this story ends. johnny *could* wake up in a big ole feather bed, but he won't. he's gone. there's no changing that. the opt down reminds us that while the song itself is mostly hopeful, this story doesn't end perfectly. the rest of the song is wistful, it's longing for what pony could have done back then, but there's still some hope mixed in. maybe he could now. maybe this time he'll do something more. for johnny.
