Our Hurricane Sandy Immigrant Outreach Initiative Report highlights the efforts of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies and our numerous community and faith-based partner organizations to address the needs of immigrant New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
Through thoughtful, intentional and repeated engagement, Immigrant Outreach Workers were able to identify and assist more than 6,800 households across the affected areas, bringing information, guidance and resources to many families that were disconnected from traditional lines of communication and aid. Through this process, we have learned which strategies most effectively respond to the needs of immigrant and limited English proficient residents, and we have developed a more defined understanding of the challenges that remain.
This report describes the circumstances faced by immigrant households in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in depth and provides recommendations that will make our city safer—and our immigrant communities stronger—in the event of future disasters.
