Allison Fisher at MMFA:
For two decades, Fox News has weaponized major disasters caused by supercharged storms to attack political opponents, push right-wing narratives, and deny climate change. Major storms that hit populated areas generate wall-to-wall TV news coverage. At its best, this coverage exposes systemic issues that leave certain populations vulnerable to disasters, keeps a spotlight on both rescue and recovery processes to keep accountable those responsible for disaster response, and discusses the link between our warming planet and the intensification of storms, along with solutions for reducing climate pollution. At its worst, coverage ignores these issues, downplaying or denying the role of climate change and using disasters to amplify false narratives and misinformation that serve a political agenda. In 20 years of hurricane reporting, Fox News’ coverage has predominately reflected the latter. Below is an overview of some of the major storms that have made landfall in the U.S. over the past 20 years – and how Fox covered them.
During the last two decades, ranging from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to Hurricane Sandy in 2012 to Hurricane Dorian in 2019 to Hurricane Helene in 2024, right-wing outlet Fox “News” pumped out climate change denialism, misinformation, and pro-GOP propaganda about the effects of hurricanes.

With one major hurricane having just hit the state and a more dangerous one about to make landfall in a couple of days, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is refusing to take phone calls from Vice President Kamala Harris. More proof that DeSantis is a shit governor.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has refused to take a call with Vice President Kamala Harris about Hurricane Milton, a source close to the governor told ABC News. The DeSantis team believes the call from the vice president is politically motivated, according to the source, and is thus refusing to take the call. DeSantis staffers also said the governor has not spoken to President Joe Biden in at least the last few days in the wake of Hurricane Helene and as the massive Hurricane Milton takes aim at Florida. "If you have the president and you have the vice president reaching out to offer up assistance provided to your constituents, the people who live in your state, to make sure we are doing everything that we need to do from federal response -- and we're reaching out, offering our support, that's where … it is up to [DeSantis] if he wants to respond to us or not," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday afternoon.
Has DeSantis stated that he won't take phone calls from adjudicated sex offender Donald Trump because of alleged political motivations? Probably not.
When Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey and New York just prior to the 2012 presidential election, that didn't stop NJ GOP Gov. Chris Christie from reaching out to Democratic President Barack Obama.
Ron DeSantis, then a US House member, voted against aid to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Ron DeSantis is not on the ballot next month but Florida is having legislative elections. I hope Floridians remember which party is trying to help them and which party is hurting them by not cooperating with disaster planning.

in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, governor Chris Christie was willing to put aside partisan politics and work with Obama on getting New Jersey back on its feet, and while their friendship was short-lived, it was incredibly touching to see at the time.
meanwhile, Ron DeSantis won't even accept a phonecall from the White House. a lot of words have been spent discussing the impact of our hyper-polarized political climate, but one thing I've never seen talked about is its impact on our art.
in 2013, AO3 user Roscavenbar wrote Bipartisanship, an Obama/Christie slash fic set during Obama's visit to Jersey following Hurricane Sandy. sadly, with our political divide growing wider every year, the Biden/DeSantis old man yaoi we deserve feels further away than ever
Republicans. Every. fucking. time.
It’s the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy hitting here. An example of its effects is the first picture. Those two trees were left standing there with most of their branches ripped off when most of the rest of the little grove they were in was knocked down. Meanwhile down in the woods behind them, huge oaks and very old cherries and other trees were found lying on the ground when the storm was over.
