Mayors Endorse National Service

At their annual meeting, the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously pass a resolution in support of national service.

We love mayors, and mayors love national service.

We saw that earlier this spring, when 1,760 mayors representing 110 million Americans stood up for AmeriCorps and Senior Corps on the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

Today, our relationship grew even closer.

At their annual meeting in Dallas, the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously passed a resolution endorsing national service. The resolution highlights the benefits of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps in improving lives, strengthening communities, and expanding economic opportunity, recognizing national service as “a critical and effective solution to community challenges facing mayors across the country.”

The mayors pledged to work with us to find additional sources of funding, expand our collective impact, place a priority on hiring AmeriCorps alums, and participate in upcoming recognition events.

We can’t say we’re too surprised -- after all, mayors are all about getting things done.  But it sure is nice to be recognized.  And it’s another great sign of the growing bipartisan support for national service.

2014 Service Bowl: Everyone’s a Winner

Earlier this year, the two mayors of this year’s Super Bowl cities made a friendly wager: the winning mayor would host the mayor from the opposing team for a day of volunteer service with AmeriCorps.

Last Saturday, Mayor Ed Murray of Seattle and Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver made good on their “Service Bowl” bet.  The two mayors joined AmeriCorps Director Bill Basl, AmeriCorps members, and staff from the City of Seattle and Serve Washington in a service project at Century Link field, the home of the Seahawks.  The mayors and volunteers held a resume building and interview prep workshop for area teens and young adults. Many of the youth were from the city's ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, which delivers critical services to homeless young adults age 18-25 and other low-income persons.  AmeriCorps members from across Seattle as well as well Seattle City staff were also paired with youth to share career advice. 

In the afternoon, Seattle Mayor Murray continued the day of service and by serving alongside AmeriCorps members at a Habitat for Humanity build in the Rainier Vista neighborhood.  Check out our Storify to see all the Service Bowl action.
