We gonna have a little chitchat on Mrs. Mazzeo and her bio of Betsy Hamilton so you should brace yourself.
You know, I bet most of us have more trust to book written by historians by obvious reasons. For example when I’m buying a history book I wanna be more or less confident in the information I’ll get from it. I don’t wanna sit 30% of my time reading it and 70% of it checking sources author thought proper to put in it.
This book isn’t exception. I gave it more trust since it’s hard to find information on Eliza tho. Sadly it became clear really fast that the quality of this was just as suspected. “#1 New York Times bestseller author”. not a good thing to see on a history book.
So back to problems of this one.
1. First of all, sources. Half of them isn’t stated at all and one third of others is stated wrongly. You may see three wrongly stated sources in a row. You may see sources that have no information that he mentioned at all. You may see sources that no historian can seriously use for a BIOGRAPHY. Yes, I’m talking about this blasted post from tumblr. Come on, this is just embarrassing.
2. The narrative closer to novel and it is more novel than a history book since 70% of things she says about Eliza are very wild and bald presumptions, most of which are based on nothing. For god’s sake you can’t look me dead in the eyes and say “Hamilton was drinking on the other side of the river while Eliza was at home alone”.
3. Aaron, sweetheart, I’m so sorry. No minimal job was done here.
4. This book is inspired by musical and bio of Hamilton by Ron Chernow. It shows in author’s note in the end of the book and in the book itself. And it’s not a compliment.
5. Maybe I’m delusional but I think it’s not exactly right (to put it lightly) to say that last 50 years of Eliza’s life were just constant attempts to be a Roman wife Alexander wanted. To justify every good thing she have done by her determination to please her dead husband. Doesn’t sit right with me at all.
And the good stuff... for me there’s nothing good in this bio. It doesn’t state facts right way, it doesn’t really work as a novel. Apparently if you’re historian you can just say whatever you want and source however you like cause no one is gonna check your shit because you get more trust than other people (*looks in Chernow’s direction*). Yes, I understand it’s very hard to write about women in general, since (and especially in Eliza’s case) barely any documents were preserved. But it’s not really an excuse when you’re deciding to write a book. For example biography of Mrs. Jumel by Margaret A. Oppenheimer. Despite having to deal with huge age gaps as well and relying mostly on correspondence of other people she did a good job, using articles on women history in general to close some holes in the narrative. You can actually enjoy this book tho I’d like to read a few more to make conclusions.
In the end of the book she writes “you hold in your hands the first full-length biography of Eliza Hamilton”. Do we tho? This book isn’t really about Elizabeth Hamilton. It’s about Hamilton. And the worst thing is by the end of the book you wish this biography have never been written. Because Eliza Hamilton deserved so much better than this.

Long before I was born my mom baked. Her fav holiday #cookie (there were many) was her butter cookies from a late 1800’s cookbook. When she fell ill around 2000 we began making them for her. And since her passing in 2005 we — my niece, nephew, and assorted partners — have taken on the tradition to do so each year. We stick to her exact recipe and use only her cutters and 50 year old rolling board. This year we added a new cutter: a #Mazzeo stamp. I love my niece @alyssabmazzeo for her devotion to this tradition. #MerryChristmas everyone. And I love you mom. Forever.
