Songs are written “word-for-word” from the Bible, like this one Amy wrote from Matthew 5:14-16, "You are the Light of the World!" The 2003 Biola University alum has been singing and acting since she was a child. As a result of a difficult physical time in her life, she began reading the "One Year Bible" and literally “singing the Bible” to encourage herself. Grant at Appomattox Court House. But did you know that in 1862 the Confederate Bible Society in Augusta, Georgia, printed the first edition of a small Bible to fit into a soldier’s pocket—taking the Bible with him into battle? The demand became so great that the Confederate Bible Society attempted to import Bibles from Great Britain, with blockade runners challenging the Union soldiers attempting to prevent the smuggling of Bibles to the South. A traditional tune called “Gospel Plow,” the title inspired by Luke 9, was the basis of another popular song in the civil rights movement called “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize.” This song’s lyrics include: “Paul and Silas thought they were lost, the dungeon shook and the chains fell off,” referencing Acts 16. "We Shall Overcome," the iconic hymn of the civil rights movement, was inspired by Galatians 6 and was based on a hymn, “I’ll Overcome Some Day,” published in 1900 by a son of a slave, Charles Albert Tindley.
