Glass Shark love the fat kid, that's one thing ya gotta know about Glass Shark.

Ah yes forever one of my favorite MBMBAM moments. I've been a fan of MBMBAM for a few years now, and occasionally I'll stop listening to or looking up funny moments on YouTube for a while, but I always return for Glass Shark and Shrimp Heaven Now.

This is a design I made last year, and considering I went into it not even knowing how to draw a shark, let alone make it look like it's made of glass, I think it holds up pretty well.

Glass Shark's just vibin' down in that deep dark water.

i know we all like to to talk about the duality of Griffin but i just listened to an episode of mbmbam where Justin gave really poignant and heartfelt advice to a woman who went through a break up after a twelve year long relationship and end it with “take care of yourself and the rest will follow” and then immediately after Griffin asked if he wanted a yahoo said “put it in me!”

College Adventures Special Episode III: Interview with James Baxter!

I know I’m really late to the party, but here’s the McElroy fan animation that the quaint legend James Baxter himself animated at our school!

I don’t think it’s ever good to idolize someone too much though so to quote him “I’m the worst; I forget to save my work all the time.”

He listens to the audio he has to animate for several times to get a good feel of it.

Emphasized syllables should have a motion to match them!

James enjoys the satisfying feeling of seeing a big pile of finished drawings. He does mostly digital these days but that nostalgia still gets to him!

As the creative consultant at Netflix animation, he loves seeing all the cool new art styles people are coming up with, like in Spiderverse and Klaus! 

The film that first inspired James was the Thief and the Cobbler, but his biggest one is Milt Kahl!

 He started out as an in-betweener on Who Framed Roger Rabbit when the producers visited the UK. He took a chance to ask them for a job audtion and they let him! (But on the other hand, there are times you shouldn’t ask for a job and I’ll get to that soon)

Filmmakers come to Netflix with ideas for them to produce, not the other way around. Klaus is the first of many animated features coming from Netflix!

There are 25-30 projects currently being animated at Netflix (movies, Tv shows, shorts, etc)

James’ most fun time animating: Beauty and the Beast ballroom scene!

James’ most stressful time animating: Lion King (he had to do all-nighters!)

James’ overall favorite film(s) to work on: HTTYD 1 and 2!

James’ favorite style to animate in: The 2D intro to Kung Fu Panda!

Recommended shows coming soon: Battle Kitty and Kid Cosmic!

The best advice he’s gotten: Follow the brief

Don’t animate too much before showing the director, in case they want you to re-do it all!

Newbie animators tend to over-animate their scenes to try and show off, which results in the scene just not fitting with the rest of the product instead of standing out well.

“Storyboarders should keep in mind how many frames each in-between should take”

James really wishes he could’ve worked on The Iron Giant and Lilo & Stitch!

And now that all of that's done, here’s a doozy of a story that you won’t get from any other James Baxter interview:

There was this guy during the talk (not anyone in my class) who would exclusively ask questions that other people had already asked. Like after someone asked James how it was like animating for adventure time, this clown (we call him Buttplug Guy because he once asked our history teacher about buttplugs) asked “Uhh I heard from a friend that you animated on adventure time- did you?” and later on when James Baxter was describing animating for Beauty and the Beast, Buttplug guy asked “Uhh did you direct that movie? Did you do character design for it? Did you storyboard, etc?”

And to top it all off, he asked James Baxter for a job twice during the talk! Once where he was like “Uhh… would you ever consider hiring someone from Chapman?” and the second time he was like “Uhh… could you give me your business card?” 

And because of this dude, the head of Animation and a bunch of the seniors got really mad and issued a stern reminder that nobody is allowed to ask guest speakers for jobs. I would’ve made a comic about this, but it’d need way too many characters and too much context…

tried my hand at some mbmbam art tonight! gonna try and make an animatic for a class project this weekend so I was practicing my doodles with some business looks
