Modern Cartoons that Look Retro

Cuphead Game. This 2017 platformer is colourful, but all the characters are in the style of retro cartoons. the characters move in a bendy way and their eyes are like dots or ‘pies’.

MC BESS

He is a contemporary illustrator who uses the retro cartooning style in his works. His drawings are black and white. His characters are also flexible and have retro cartoon eyes. He worked on some animations for music videos as well. Because he is also a musician in addition to being an artist .

His visual language is very dark. Not because it is black and white, but also the subject matter. Dark woods and demons are often present in his illustrations and animations.

Studio Birdo

They ar an animation studio from Brazil. Most of their work is more modern style of animation, but this music video they created for  Pequeno Cidadão is designed in a vintage cartoon style. Noodle extremities, inanimate objects having faces, retro eyes and no colour. But overall it is a fun and positive video.

I even sketched some characters while watching this video.

Dave Cooper

He is another modern illustrator and painter who uses retro cartoon style. He does use colour in his works, but the flowiness of lines, the eyes and the mouths of his characters look old school. His visual language is not explicitly dark, but it is disturbing to a certain extent.
