R.I.P. John Sykes (1959-2024)

Spellbound was one of the defining records of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, coming in strong and confident right at the peak of the movement and capturing every facet of the era’s charm and power.  And alongside Iron Maiden, Tygers of Pan Tang had the chops and songs to back up the energy and attitude, with all on full display on chargers like “Blackjack”: John Sykes may have been the hero in waiting, but Jon Deverill’s dramatic but swaggering vocals did just as much to make the Tygers stand out.  As skilled as the band was, “Blackjack” had the same youthful vigor and fun that powered all of the best NWOBHM moments.
