Danny blinks, then shakes his head, laughing.

"What?" Steve asks, grinning at Danny.

And right there, that look of affection, all that warmth directed his way--Danny doesn't know what to make of it. Or what to make of the fact that Steve will watch movies with him and Grace, completely engaged, asking ridiculous questions and making Grace giggle with delight. Honestly, the man is an enormous goof. So much that it makes Danny's heart hurt.

DAWWWW okay so this was badass and lovely and hot, WONDERFUL.

Until the Hour of Separation

And God help him, he can’t wait until tomorrow when he gets to see the psychotic bastard again.

The thought makes him want to bang his head against the wall because this was not supposed to happen to him again. He can’t fuckingdothis again, not when he’s only just begun piecing his life back together after the last time.

After much consideration, he does bang his head against the wall. He does it twice, with feeling. Then the neighbour next door starts banging back, and Danny gives up and rubs his forehead. He takes a deep breath, cracks open a beer, and turns on the TV.

This was, ugh, i loved this! It's so much more than the summary suggest, beautiful.

Steve gaped at him. “Look who I’ve got to keep up with!” Danny smirked and tried not to look too smug, because that was never an attractive thing. It didn’t work, but whatever, it was worth it to see that pinched look on Steve’s face. “I don’t know what the Army calls it but out here in the real world, it’s called ‘conversation.’” “I don’t know what the Army calls it either,” Steve growled. “Because I was in the goddamn Navy!” “Tomato, tomahto.”

OH MY GOD THIS WAS PERFECT I CANNOT EVEN i wanna comment on all the things i loved but i don't wanna spoil you so just UGH GOD read it? the characterization was so spot on, the banter was AMAZING, the sex was just UGH and the angst was delicious, just, GO READ OKAY THANK.

There’s another sigh, and Steve notices for the first time how tired Danny sounds. “We had a raid go a little pear shaped,” he says, and Steve has the feeling that Danny’s doing some editing of the story for his benefit. “Kono got clocked in the head with a big hunk of wood and went down pretty hard, Chin might have gone a little trigger-happy making sure she didn’t get hurt any further, and Alson got a nice graze on his shoulder.”

“Is Kono-”

“She’s fine,” Danny interrupts. “Concussion, nice bruise, but she’s fine.” Danny waits a beat before adding, “Alson transferred out.”

Steve lets out a shaky laugh. “You called that one.”

“They all leave after a while,” Danny says simply. “Apparently, it takes a special brand of crazy to want to stick around here. I’ve been told that I’m difficult to work with, Kono needs to be locked up, and Chin needs professional help.” He laughs dryly. “I told them to wait until you got back, and we’d all look normal in comparison.”

I had tears in my eyes three times and full on cried at the end. All that in only 15k words.

Facts Continue to Change Their Shape

“No.” Steve looked at Cath, still on the bed but kneeling as if in penitence. “If this hadn’t happened, if Doris’ safe hadn’t been broken into and I hadn’t told you I knew she was lying, would you have mentioned it? Were you ever gonna tell me any of this?”

The hesitation of words stuck in her throat was the only answer he needed.

“This is over,” he said.

“Steve, no. You don’t mean that,” Catherine said. She reached out a hand. “It was a bad decision not to tell you.”

“Yes, it was.” Steve took several shaky breaths. “I don’t blame you. I don’t. I know better than anyone now how my mother can manipulate and bully. But you know me, Cath. You’ve known me longer than she has, and you…”

“And I thought I was protecting you,” Catherine said. “I love you.”

“I love you, too. I’m just not that sure it’s enough. You know me.” Steve’s eyes were hot, vision blurry and in this instance, it was better that he couldn’t see. “You know I’ve been lied to my whole life and you made that bad decision anyway. If you did it once, you could do it again, and I can’t take that risk right now. I can’t.”

Danny lay a hand on Steve’s forearm and squeezed. “Cath’s a good person. Maybe you just need time.”

“Maybe. I don’t know,” Steve said. He shook his head and felt more mixed-up than ever as far as Catherine was concerned. He’d hashed it all out in his head many times over and it wouldn’t completely reconcile. There were always spare pennies. Enormous trust issue sized pennies. “There isn’t a doubt in my mind she did it for good intentions. I’ve already forgiven her. I just don’t know if I can trust her again.”

I love that some fanfic writers obviously have a better grasp of Steve's character than the actual tv show writers seem to, because this fic? explains exactly why i do not for a minute believe Steve would just get back with Cath, just like that, all things forgiven and forgotten. Trust is something that's fundamental to every relationship, and with Steve, that goes tenfold. so, yeah

Also, i found myself very surprised to agree with everything that was written about Doris here.

This is not really a McDanno fic, but more of a Steve character study and an episode coda for 3.18.

They Said The Past Won't Rest

He was clad in a pair of old boxer shorts and a threadbare white t-shirt, hair mussed and eyes half-open.

That was how he first met Danny Williams.

He walked straight into the man’s space thanks to barely looking where he was going, stepping back and settling his body before it went on-guard.

“Hey,” the short blond guy said with a scowl. “Watch it.” His angry glare turned into a curious onceover and then all at once, he lit up like he’d suddenly realized something. “Oh, hey! You’re the guy, yeah? The prodigal son. Steven McGarrett,” he marveled, extending his hand excitedly. “I’m Danny Williams, I’m working with your Dad on this new case. He will not shut up about you.”

“No,” Danny agrees, “this is true. This is New Jersey--you didn’t even bring one change of clothes, did you?”

Steve shrugs, and Danny sighs, reaching down to grab the edge of the covers.

“Tomorrow,” he says, “you--you, not me--are explaining this to my sister. And then we are going to the mall, and you are going to hate it, you are going to hate it so much, and that’s going to be so good for me, Steven, I can’t even tell you. I’m going to make you buy acoat.”

“Okay,” Steve says, because he knows it’s true. He knows that tomorrow morning Danny will shove him down the stairs in a pair of borrowed boxers and force him to make small talk with Amy, knows that he will, in fact, hate the mall. He knows Danny will give him shit for not bringing clothing for--probably for the rest of his life, actually, that seems likely, given how tenacious he’s been about the shark thing.

Ho'oponopono

Another thing Danny realizes, when he wakes up (again) to the sound of Rachel calling him, is that he’s never going to see New Jersey again. He’s going to be trapped in an endlessly repeating loop on this pineapple-infested hellhole forever.

Okay, so maybe calling it a hellhole is a bit is harsh. He will grant that Hawaii is not as bad as he had originally thought it to be. The fact that he can surf passably well now is a definite plus.

And on second thoughts, he isn’t trapped here, necessarily. He may be repeating the same day over and over again, but there’s no rule that says he has to remain in Hawaii, right?

After answering Rachel’s call, Danny does a quick search on his phone. Ah, the wonders of technology. There’s a Continental flight leaving at 9:30, direct to Newark. It’s a ten-hour flight, but that will still give him at least eight hours in New Jersey. At this point, he’ll take it. Anything for a change of scenery.

Groundhog Day H50 style. Danny gets stuck, reliving the same Friday over and over again. UGH, loved this!
