Oct. 21, 1992: McDonogh’s Laurie Schwoy, a freshman, scores the only goal in a 1-0 soccer victory over John Carroll. The National High School Player of the Year as a senior, Schwoy goes on to help North Carolina to four national titles, then plays for the U.S. national team and in the pros.
Oct. 19, 1985: Towson State hands Morgan State its 18th straight football loss, 52-8. Kurt Beathard passes for four touchdowns in the Tigers’ homecoming.
Oct. 18, 1969: The Bullets celebrate a 124-117 victory over the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics at the Civic Center. Earl Monroe scores 34 points for Baltimore (2-0).
Oct. 18, 1963: Coming off its first victory in 33 games, Severn leads Gilman 8-0 after one period before losing, 35-16. It’s the 18th conseutive win for the Greyhounds, who get two touchdowns each from by Tom Beck and Jim Isaacs.
Oct. 22, 1950: The Rams crush the Colts, 70-27, at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, setting a regular-season record for the most points scored in a regular-season NFL game. The outcome wasn’t unexpected; the Rams had defeated Baltimore, 70-21, in a preseason game.
Oct. 24, 1947: Fritz Maisel, a racehorse named for the infielder from Catonsville who played five years with the New York Yankees, wins the Burning Tree Purse by 1 1/2 lengths at Laurel.
Oct. 24, 1942: Held to one touchdown in the first half, Maryland explodes to defeat Western Maryland (now McDaniel), 51-0, before an announced 12,000 at Baltimore Stadium. Led by quarterback Tommy Mont, the Terps complete 15 of 19 passes for 206 yards under coach Clark Shaughnessy.
Oct. 22, 1930: In the headline wrestling match at the 104th Medical Regiment Armory, Karl Pozella defeats Joe “Toots” Mondt, to the crowd’s delight. Mondt, 235 pounds, slaps his opponent repeatedly in the face until the 195-pound Pozella whirls him over his head with an airplane swing and slams Mondt to the mat.

Oct. 21, 1981: Willis McGahee, a running back who spent 2007 to 2010 with the Ravens. He made the Pro Bowl his first season with the team, rushing for 1,207 yards and seven touchdowns.

April 23, 1989: Bob Milacki, 24, faces the minimum 27 batters in pitching a three-hitter as the Orioles defeat the Minnesota Twins, 3-0, before an announced 33,511 at Memorial Stadium.
April 23, 1983: Charlie Fenwick wins a record seventh straight Grand National in the 81st running of the steeplechase race in Butler. Fenwick scores a five-length victory aboard Treasure Island, an 8-year-old bay gelding.
April 23, 1971: Second baseman Davey Johnson hits two 415-foot home runs in the Orioles' 8-2 victory over the Angels in California. A six-run rally in the ninth inning wins it for the 1970 world champions.
April 23, 1960: Roger Goss, Maryland's All-America lacrosse attackman, scores six times in a 22-7 rout of Syracuse. The Terps get two goals from Bud Beardmore, who'll coach the team to two national championships in the 1970s.
April 23, 1950: Charlie Bassler, perhaps the area's best golfer, shoots a 20 on the 575-yard sixth hole at Hillendale in the annual Cancer Fund Tournament. Twice, Bassler — the pro at Rolling Road — is penalized for moving stones that move his ball, and twice he makes putts that roll past the cup and strike his shoe.
April 25, 1934: McDonogh pitcher Dutch Weidinger strikes out 16, and gets two hits himself, in a 6-3 season-opening victory over Loyola.
April 21, 1928: The Johns Hopkins lacrosse team sets a national college record for single-game scoring in a 21-5 victory over Penn. George Helfrisch gets eight goals for the Blue Jays.
April 21, 1896: Returning home from Boston by steamer, the Orioles run into a fog bank and are forced to anchor off Long Island. Players pile into lifeboats and row the one-half mile to shore, where they board a train to Baltimore.

April 21, 1947: Al Bumbry, Orioles outfielder and 1973 American League Rookie of the Year who played 13 years here, helping Baltimore reach two World Series.
