April 23, 1989: Bob Milacki, 24, faces the minimum 27 batters in pitching a three-hitter as the Orioles defeat the Minnesota Twins, 3-0, before an announced 33,511 at Memorial Stadium.
April 23, 1983: Charlie Fenwick wins a record seventh straight Grand National in the 81st running of the steeplechase race in Butler. Fenwick scores a five-length victory aboard Treasure Island, an 8-year-old bay gelding.
April 23, 1971: Second baseman Davey Johnson hits two 415-foot home runs in the Orioles' 8-2 victory over the Angels in California. A six-run rally in the ninth inning wins it for the 1970 world champions.
April 23, 1960: Roger Goss, Maryland's All-America lacrosse attackman, scores six times in a 22-7 rout of Syracuse. The Terps get two goals from Bud Beardmore, who'll coach the team to two national championships in the 1970s.
April 23, 1950: Charlie Bassler, perhaps the area's best golfer, shoots a 20 on the 575-yard sixth hole at Hillendale in the annual Cancer Fund Tournament. Twice, Bassler — the pro at Rolling Road — is penalized for moving stones that move his ball, and twice he makes putts that roll past the cup and strike his shoe.
April 25, 1934: McDonogh pitcher Dutch Weidinger strikes out 16, and gets two hits himself, in a 6-3 season-opening victory over Loyola.
April 21, 1928: The Johns Hopkins lacrosse team sets a national college record for single-game scoring in a 21-5 victory over Penn. George Helfrisch gets eight goals for the Blue Jays.
April 21, 1896: Returning home from Boston by steamer, the Orioles run into a fog bank and are forced to anchor off Long Island. Players pile into lifeboats and row the one-half mile to shore, where they board a train to Baltimore.
